MANILA, Philippines — The San Beda Red Booters seek to close in on a season sweep as it clashes with defending champion Arellano University in the seniors division of the 92nd NCAA football tournament at the Rizal Football field Thursday.
Drawing strength from a double by Fil-Brit Connor Tacagni, the Red Booters, the first round pennant winners, survived a feisty Lyceum of the Philippines University 2-1, Tuesday to remain unscathed and move two wins away from sweeping its way to the finals where they will enjoy a thrice-to-beat edge.
San Beda will need to beat Arellano in its 12 p.m.showdown and St. Benilde on Tuesday to advance straight to the finals.
The Blazers are the other unbeaten squad in the Final Four after it edged the Chiefs, 2-0, Tuesday to stay in the title hunt.
St. Benilde is aiming to beat LPU in their 2 p.m. duel and San Beda to force a one-game finale against the latter for this year's crown.
But the Red Booters, who are gunning for a league-best 22nd championship, are determined to win it all.
"We are focused on winning our last two games because we all want to regain the championship," said San Beda coach Michael Pediamonte in Filipino.
In juniors' play, Arellano U looks to continue its giant-slaying ways as it faces off with San Beda at 8 a.m.
The Junior Chiefs shocked reigning titlist La Salle-Greenhills, 1-0, on the strength of a 64th minute rocket by Kent Talam while the Junior Red Booters smashed the Letran Squires, 5-0.
