KAYA FC picked up from where it left off as it hammered Philippine Army, 5-1, to step up its title bid in the United Football League on Tuesday night at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
Fresh from a two-week break, the championship contenders broke the game wide open in the second half as they had five different goalscorers to score the runaway victory that improved their point total to 36 points, enabling them to overtake Loyola Meralco for second spot on goal difference.
Kaya players received a halftime tongue-lashing from coach David Perkovic, who demanded more from their performance in the first half, which ended with a 1-1 deadlock.
“And they responded to the challenge,” said the Australian mentor, whose team moved two points behind Global, although the league leaders still have a game on hand.
After Kaya opened the scoring barely two minutes into the game behind prized Spanish acquisition Pablo Rodriguez Aracil, the LBC-backed squad couldn’t build a momentum and even let the Troopers equalize thanks to John Cain in the 16th minute.
But the tournament dark horse cranked it up after the restart, starting with an awe-inspiring goal from OJ Porteria, who flashed his individual brilliance by eluding two defenders then firing low into the left corner two minutes in to put his team ahead for good.
Nine minutes later, Christian Ayew scored a looper off a Chris Greatwich flick feed, before Tommy Taylor struck just outside the box in the 69 minute.
Emmanuel Mbata completed the scoring fray two minutes before stoppage time when the Cameroonian winger headed home a Hector Zaghi cross from the left side.
The Troopers remained in seventh spot with 17 points.
