Dubai: Michael Weiss, the coach of the Azkals, is hoping to line up a pool of talent as the Philippines sets sights on some international level football for the first time in their history.
"If we wanted to, we could have played against a weaker team and won. But we chose a strong side like Uzbekistan simply because we wanted these young boys who normally don't have a chance to get the experience of playing at a very high level," Weiss told media after the Azkals went down 0-3 in their friendly late on Saturday.
"Our aim is to develop our home-grown players, and hence this defeat doesn't harm us as our eyes are on the March 9 match [against North Korea in the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal]," he added.
"We are expecting a few of our professional players to join us for the Challenge Cup next month. So the idea now is to develop a parallel line of players to further the development of Filipino football," he said.
Weiss has the luxury of having quite a few of his Azkals play professionally all over Europe, prominently Stephan Schrock (Greuther Furth); Jerry Lucena (Frankfurt); goalkeeper Neil Etheridge (Fulham) and Dennis Cagara (AGF).
"At the moment we are starting to integrate the younger players like Angel Guirado, Marwin Angeles and Juan Luis Guirado. We are only creating options from our side so that we can dig deeper into a pool of players for the future," Weiss admitted.

ReplyDeleteThen why are you fielding only one homegrown player against Uzbekistan ? (fil-iranian Misagh)
Are Angel and Juan Luis Guirado younger players ? Angel is 27 :) Juan Luis is 32 :)
what is wrong with this coach? he doesnt know what he is saying. this is the beginning of the down curve for the Azkals! if we don't change the style of play of the coach, we should change him ASAP!
ReplyDeleteHe fielded Margarse who is a home grown player but he is 37yrs old.
ReplyDeleteHe also subbed in Doctora.
Margarse is actually 35 but ya, he's still old and useless to the national team!
DeleteThe idea that being beaten by stronger teams improves a weaker one is nonsense.
DeleteFootball games are far too dynamic for any player on the field to have the time to look and learn. Video replays with the coach highlighting clever moves and dumb ones certainly helps but there's no need for money burning foreign trips to do this. All televised top level games are available to download. Sessions indoors followed by longer ones on the pitch trying to copy the good and eliminate the bad can be held at home.
Weiss and Palami will disagree but the fans have seen little reward for the cash wasted in Japan, Germany and now Dubai.
What about Doctora? Don't know how old he is but he made a good account of himself. Sort of. Well he got dispossessed a couple of times but I think he was alright.
DeleteDoctora turns 26 in April. He barely did anything in the game.
DeleteAngeles also started for the team. Naglabasan na man ang mga expert kuno.
DeleteNo money wasted in the Mideast as it is funded by rich Arabs as part of their support for our program.
ReplyDeleteDream on...
ReplyDeleteSecondly, why are the Azkals training in hot humid sea-level Dubai for a tournament to be held halfway up the Himalayas in cold crispy Nepal?
Because it is funded by wealthy Arab dudes?
DeletePopulated areas in Nepal are not really cold.
DeleteDaily mean temperature in Feb. of Dubai is around 20°C and that in Mar. of Kathmandhu is around 15°C. Not really different.
LOL! Did you not watch the game?!? It was obviously a night game and everybody (apart from the players obviously) was wearing some sort of sweater or jacket! You're not going to wear something like that in place such as the UAE if it doesn't warrant it!
ReplyDeleteMaraming expert dito na hindi naman marunong sumipa ng bola. LOL...
