Scoreless draw sends UST XI to UAAP finals

University of Santo Tomas battled Far Eastern to a scoreless draw yesterday at the end of the UAAP Season 74 men’s football eliminations at the Ateneo High School field – a result that was sufficient to send the Tigers to another championship showdown with holder University of the Philippines.

The Tigers wound up with four wins, four draws and two losses for 16 points, enough to nose out the Tams (15 points on 4-3-3) from the title picture and challenge No. 1 State U (20 points on 5-5-0).

“We played defensively and at the same time, we went on counter-attack. Good thing, our defense held up and FEU didn’t connect on their attacks, especially in the first half,” UST coach Marjo Allado, who led the Tigers to their third straight finals appearance, said.

With a virtual lock on top seeding and twice-to-beat advantage in the finals, the Maroons settled for a 1-1 stalemate with University of the East at the close of the two-round elims.

After conceding a goal for the first time in the tourney to UE’s Fitch Arboleda, UP salvaged an unbeaten season via Jinggoy Valmayor’s connection at the 89th minute, his fourth for the season.

In the other men’s match, Ateneo banked on Anton Amistoso’s 71st-minute strike to thwart rival La Salle, 1-0. As a result, the Archers wound up fourth overall with 13 points (3-4-3) while the Blue Eagles finished fifth with nine points (3-0-7). The Red Warriors were sixth with seven points (1-4-5).

In the distaff side, the UST Tigresses nipped the UP Lady Maroons, 2-1, while the DLSU Lady Archers trounced AdMU Lady Eagles via the same score to share the lead with 12 points (3-3-1).

The Lady Maroons, who were gunning for a finals berth with a win, got stuck with 11 points (3-2-3).
