Jason de Jong of the Philippine Azkals shows just how much he has changed from being the team's poster bad boy to a mature team player as he shares his insights on the local football scene and even gives a strong message to bashers of the national team.

Azkal Jason de Jong not losing sleep over foul that led to Palestine goal in final

By Karlo Sacamos
PHILIPPINE men’s football team midfielder Jason de Jong hasn’t lost sleep over his crucial foul that led to the free kick and the all-important Palestine goal that denied the Azkals a spot in the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup.
The AFC Challenge Cup final last May had been scoreless until eventual Golden Boot winner Ashraf Alfawaghra converted an impressive free kick, awarded to Palestine after De Jong committed a foul in the 58th minute.
The Palestinians held on, 1-0, to reach the Asian Cup, which remained elusive for the Filipinos.
Although disappointed with the result, De Jong holds no guilt for committing the foul, saying he was just trying to prevent Palestine from making an attempt.
“Not really regrets, because I knew I couldn’t have won in the situation,” De Jong said in a chat with Spin.ph. “If he would’ve gone and taken the shot, then people would say, ‘Why didn’t you tackle him?’ So I put him on the floor.”
“It was just a perfect free kick,” the Filipino-Dutch midfielder added. “That happens in football and I have to pick myself up from that again and move forward.”
“It was sad we didn’t win the champions, but we can still we should have our heads up,” he continued. “We reached the final.”
Personally, one positive De Jong can take away is the exposure he gained. The standout defensive midfielder actually emerged as the Azkal who saw the most action as he played in all five matches, coming in as an early substitute in the group stage opener against Afghanistan, before starting and finishing the last games.
“That’s really positive for me,” he said.

Stallions sign new players

United Football League squad Penson Stallion Giligan’s added key players to bolster its campaign for the upcoming season.
The team signed Azkals member Jason de Jong and took in defender Carlos Canas Joaquin Garcia and forward Rufino Sanchez on loan from Spanish third division side CF Internacional de Madrid.
“The two CF Madrid players are important (for us) to finish higher (in the standings),” Stallion managing coach Ernie Nierras told InterAKTV. “For De Jong, I will use his natural position as a holding midfielder.”
De Jong was initially offered a slot by Stallion before trying out for Ayr United FC, a second division club in Scotland. However, his stint with the Scottish side didn’t push through.
Meanwhile, Garcia and Sanchez were part of the CF Madrid squad which defeated a selection of players from the Philippine team and the UFL in a charity match last January.
Led by former national team striker Reuben Doctora Jr., Stallion finished fourth out of the ten teams in Lesgue play last season.

Azkals’ De Jong eyes stint with Scottish club

KATHMANDU—Filipino-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong has ruled out playing in the United Football League in favor of a possible stint with Scottish second-division club Ayr United.

The 22-year-old De Jong was earlier linked to Stallion FC in the UFL until he got an invitation to try out with the Scottish club.

“I would have loved to play in the Philippines, but this is a big opportunity for me,” he said.

“I have to improve and it is important I play at a high level because the national team also has some very good players at my position.”

De Jong plays in the same position as standouts Stephan Schrock, Jerry Lucena, Paul Mulders, Manny Ott and the up-and-coming Marwin Angeles.

“It’s good that we have a lot of options in the position,” De Jong said. “I’m happy I’m getting my chance (with the national team).”

De Jong believes the style in Scotland will fit his play.

“Teams are strong and physical and really tough. I want to play every week, that’s why I chose the club,” he said.

The Fil-Dutch midfielder, a veteran of the 2010 Suzuki Cup and last year’s Southeast Asian Games, has already missed the first match against North Korea in the AFC Challenge Cup here.

De Jong has had an up-and-down club career since coming out of the youth system of NAC Breda in The Netherlands.

A stint with Belgium club Turnhout was followed by a rather forgettable campaign with Indonesian club Persiba Balikpapan where De Jong had a falling out with team officials and was released before his contract ended.

De Jong said his deal will keep him with Ayr up until the end of the season in June.

Young Ott, De Jong man crucial siege line

By Cedelf P. Tupas

UWAIT—Their combined age is just three years older than the Philippine Azkals’ most senior member, but the heavy burden on their young shoulders doesn’t seem to bother Manny Ott and Jason de Jong.
With the more experienced midfielders unavailable because of club commitments, Ott, 19, and De Jong, 21, are expected to be deployed as central midfielders in the highly anticipated second-round World Cup Qualifying clash against Kuwait on Saturday.
The top three choices for the two positions—Stephan Schrock, Jerry Lucena and Paul Mulders—will miss the Kuwait match.
Teams in the Middle East are known for their physical and rugged style, but Ott and De Jong, the tough-tackling Fil-Dutch standout, feel they are ready for the challenge.
Ott hones his skills with FC Ingolstadt in Germany and has mixed it up with more experienced players.
“I’m used to playing against bigger players even though I am Asian-size,” said the 5-foot-6 Ott, whose mother hails from Boracay in Malay, Aklan.
“I just want to do my best and help the team. I don’t want to be pressured. I want to enjoy the game.”
It’s this easygoing personality that has endeared Ott to the Azkals, whose most senior member is Roel Gener, 37.
While Ott is known for his calm demeanor, De Jong, who traces his roots in Tarlac, has established a reputation as one who plays with a lot of tenacity.
The central midfield partnership will mark the first time that both Ott and De Jong will play together since the Suzuki Cup in Laos last year.
“My role is always to be like the extra man in front of the defense, you know like play hard physically and just let no balls come through,” said De Jong.
“I’m just here to help, and let’s see what’s gonna happen.”
Skipper Aly Borromeo sees the partnership as crucial if the Azkals are to stifle Kuwait’s attacking game.
“If Manny and Jason can overcome their midfield, I think we have chance,” said Borromeo.

De Jong apologizes to Azkals

MANILA, Philippines –After being dropped by the Philippine Azkals due to disciplinary issues, Jason de Jong is now getting a second chance to prove himself.

The Filipino-Dutch midfielder said he has apologized to Azkals Coach Michael Weiss.

"I had some issues with my club before, but now I spoke to Coach Weiss and we cleared the air," De Jong said.

He added he was happy to be back with the Azkals.

But Coach Weiss said he will test De Jong first before putting him back on the team.

"We will test him in Bahrain, and see what he brings to the team," Weiss said.

"We had different opinions on issues. But he apologized to me, to the management, and to the team," Weiss added, saying that now there were no more problems.

The Azkals coach said De Jong had the experience that the football team will need in their next match against higher-ranked Kuwait. With a report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News

Weiss softens stand on De Jong

BY BONG PEDRALVEZ

SOFTENING his stand against a prodigal Azkal, national coach Hans Michael Weiss said yesterday he is willing to take back mercurial Filipino-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong into the team—with certain conditions.

"De Jong is like a stray dog now and he needs encouragement, which is why I am willing to take him back into the family," said Weiss after learning the player was sacked by Indonesian ballclub Persiba Balikpapan for breach of contract and lack of discipline.

De Jong’s relationship with Weiss soured after he failed to play for the nationals last March, first in the second leg of their Asian Challenge Cup qualifiers against Mongolia in Ulan Bator and in the event’s group tournament in Rangoon, Myanmar.

He claimed his club commitments had kept him from playing for the Philippines in both competitions.

The German mentor also cited Dejong’s uncooperative attitude as a major reason why he had not been keen on tapping him again once he skipped the squad’s last two assignments.

Weiss disclosed the 21-year-old defensive specialist had been phoning national squad media officer Richard Pacana from overseas several times and expressed his interest of rejoining the team.

Fil-Dutch midfielder in hot water

BY BONG PEDRALVEZ

UNLESS he plays it straight, Filipino-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong may miss future assignments for the national team, according to coach Hans Michael Weiss.

"I don’t know if I will consider him (De Jong) because of lack of discipline," Weiss said shortly before leaving for Germany to personally recruit players for the Azkals’ Asian World Cup qualifying series against Sri Lanka in June.

"A player on the national team can’t behave like him," added Weiss of De Jong, 21, although he declined to elaborate what the problem was with the mid-fielder.

Playing as the "enforcer" in midfield, De Jong was a vital cog in the Azkals’ successful campaign in last year’s AFF Suzuki Cup where the country reached the semifinals of Southeast Asia’s men’s football championship for the first time in its 14-year history.

De Jong was also apparently giving problems to his Indonesian ballclub Persiba Balikpapan, which signed him up for $80,000 for the rest of the Indonesian Super League.

Indonesian news reports said De Jong was sanctioned by his club recently after he reportedly threw a fit and left the stadium when he was benched by coach Haryadi in a match against Arema.

After seeing action in the opening leg of the Asian Cup Challenge match in Mongolia last Feb. 9 in Bacolod City, De Jong did not play in the second match in Ulan Bator and the ACC group stage tournament last week in Myanmar.

Weiss said he had several options to fill in the vacuum left by De Jong, including Filipino-Germans Manuel Ott and Stefan Schrock, who play for separate squads in the German second division.

"Ott will be ready by June 3 and is presently close to breaking into the first team. He will be match fit," said Weiss, referring to the 19-year-old midfielder who suits up for Inglostadt.

Jason de Jong did not go to Mongolia...

Ray Jonsson and Jason de Jong

Philippines media been reporting that they are expecting going directly to Mongolia and also to possible group matches in Myanmar.

In my opinion this is wishful thinking.

Jason de Jong has just signed for his Indonesian club and will play first match of the second leg of the season on March 13. Would he go to Ulan Bator on March 14 , then back to Indonesia for another away match on March 19 , then leaving for Myanmar on March 20 , dropping the club`s match on March 23 ?

Ray Jonsson write on FB that he is not sure about going to Mongolia but will be ready for Myanmar.

De Jong picks Persiba Balikpapan from many offers

Azkal Jason De Jong finally signed with Persatuan Sepak Bola Indonesia Balikpapan Football Club in the Indonesian Super League, after numerous offers in Indonesia.

"During the Suzuki Cup, a lot of people actually approached me wanting to be my manager and agent. To be honest though, I listened to everyone. I kept everything open. Actually I said yes to five different people, but then again I just picked the right one, the one that I like," he said.

"It's a big club in Indonesia. I think this is right for me. I hope I can develop there," said De Jong, who trained with the team on Tuesday.

News circulated that De Jong signed with Sriwijaya FC, another Indonesian football club. However, he clarified on his Facebook page that he did not sign with Sriwijaya due to disagreements on the terms of the contract.

The main concern though is will his stint with the Azkals be affected.

"I had a meeting with coach Weiss and Dan Palami and they said, 'Jason, we're gonna look for something that will work with the Azkals because we need you a lot here. Maybe not always for the first 11, but just to have you here for the team spirit,'" De Jong said.

Still available for national duties

Even if he has already signed with Persiba Balikpapan, De Jong assures that he will still be available to play for the Philippine national team.

Aside from their plan to beat Mongolia in Ulan Bator, De Jong is also excited for the Southeast Asian Games in November.

"Coach Weiss wants to build a youth team, and a lot of new guys are coming. If you think about it, they will be the Azkals in five years. They'll be the ones carrying the Philippine flag then. It's double the honor for me since I'm playing both in the Azkals and in the U-23 squad," he ended. - Mav C. Gonzales, JVP, GMA News
