MANILA--The new UFL season is yet to kick off until next year, but Stallion made sure that it is still the aggressor in the transfer window when the club announced the signing of Carlos Briones on Sunday.

A former product of Real Madrid's La Fabrica, Charly, as he was most known, last played for College Europa in Gibraltar before he was signed by the Ilonggo club for a one-year deal that includes an extension option.

The 25-year-old Briones represented Equatorial Guinea in the last AFCON, when the host nation placed fourth.

Ernie Nierras' side continued to have its first team loaded with foreign talent after having Sean Bateau, Jordan Mintah, and Johann Noetzel in the past transfer windows.

Stallion starts title defense as coach Nierras blasts UFL on scheduling

THE arduous quest for back-to-back championships in the United Football League (UFL) begins for Stallion on opening day when it battles Green Archers United at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill on Saturday.

Without most of their key cogs in banned MVP Rufo Sanchez, Joaco Cañas, Lee Joo Young, Park Bo Bae, Diego Barrera, and Hecto Zaghi, who have either bolted to other teams or were released, the Stallions have to rely more on their local core led by Ruben Doctora and Bervic Italia.

And the new-look squad shows its worth as it kicks off its title defense against an intact Archers side led by Chieffy Caligdong and Tating Pasilan at 8:30 p.m. after Cup runner-up Pachanga-Diliman collides with Division 1 rookie Socceroo at 6:15 p.m.

Despite his overhauled roster, Stallions coach Ernie Nierras believes his current team is not necessarily weaker than the powerhouse squad that captured the UFL league crown last year.

“I don’t think so,” the confident mentor told Spin.ph on Friday. “That’s what other people would want to hope for. But we’re the defending champions, so if they want to take us for granted, that’s their choice.”

Nierras, however, admitted it’s going to be an uphill climb after the Stallions relinquished their Cup title following their early ouster in the quarterfinals of the knockout tournament two months ago.

“It’s not going to be easy. After you win the title, the hardest thing is to defend it. We found that out in the Cup,” he said. “Now in the League, we have to do a lot to be able to defend our title.”

“And the players that I have are willing to put in the work and effort to win this title back to us,” he added.

The Stallions have a few notable acquisitions in homegrown Filipino striker Meliton Pelayo, who is on loan from Philippine Army, Filipino-Italian centerback Simone Rota, and former PSG skipper Hamed Hajimehdi of Iran.

“I was able to bring in players who can run the system that we ran last year but in a different way,” Nierras said. “Last year, it was a very fast team. Possession ball is still going to be our main thing, but now we have to be more creative in attacking.”

Although ready for their campaign, Nierras had one qualm about the league’s schedule that will see the Stallions play the second and final game of an untelevised playdate.

“Nag-champion ka eh, so it makes sense na yung first televised match mo will be the champion team,” Nierras said.

“The least you can do is to give me the first televised match. I mean I won the championship and then you’re going to put me in the second game that’s not televised,” he added.

Sports5, which covers the league, only airs the tournament live on AksyonTV on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Weekend games are not televised.

“It’s up to the UFL. My point is more on principle than anything else. If it’s tomorrow, it’s tomorrow. But as champion, I don’t want to be treated as such,” Nierras concluded.

After a tight battle for the United Football League crown last season, rivals Global FC and Stallion Sta.Lucia are in a tug-of-war once again — this time, off the pitch.

Global and Stallion are both claiming the rights to star striker Rufo Sanchez, who won the Golden Boot and the Most Valuable Player awards last season.

League runner-up Global announced on Wednesday that it has signed Sanchez, who led Stallion Sta.Lucia to the Cup and League championships last season.

“Yes, Rufo and Global FC has come to terms,” Global owner Dan Palami told InterAKTV.

However, Stallion coach Ernie Nierras claimed that Sanchez is still under contract with Stallion and Global’s deal is not yet final. He admitted that he is “selling” Sanchez to Global, but said that he hasn’t received a formal offer from the squad to acquire the Spanish star.

“Rufo has an existing contract with Stallion. Until I receive and accept Global’s offer, Rufo is still our player,” Nierras told InterAKTV.

Sanchez initially joined Global on loan last July. Nierras said that the agreement was only for the duration of the 2013 Singapore Cup, where Global was able to reach the semifinals.

But Sanchez claimed last August that his contract with Stallion has ended, allowing him to sign anywhere he wanted.

“From 16 August (I) didn’t belong to any team. So here I can do whatever I want. I don’t like people than (sic) speak too much,” Sanchez wrote on his Twitter account.

Nierras said that apart from receiving Global’s official offer to Stallion, he wants Sanchez to issue a public apology before letting him go.

“He lied about being a free agent and everything that has been said and written so far,” Nierras said. “Unless we accept Global’s offer and Rufo’s public apology, he is not going anywhere.”

Sanchez’s addition would be a big boost to Global, which already boasts of a several national team players and some of UFL’s top foreign footballers. He would form a deadly attacking duo with another star striker in Izzo Elhabib, who was one of the league’s leading scorers last season.

Interestingly, both squads disputed the top UFL top honors last season. Global was Stallion’s biggest rival for the League title last season, falling short by just a few points to hoist the crown. They also faced off for the Cup championship last year.

Loyola signs Spanish Defender Joaco from Stallion

While star striker Rufo Sanchez is still the subject of o tug-of-war between two squads, the other half of Stallion Sta. Lucia’s Spanish duo has found a new home.

Defending United Football League champion Stallion released top defender Joaco Cañas to the Loyola Meralco Sparks, both teams announced on Wednesday.

“We will be signing Joaco. We agreed with Stallion this (Wednesday) evening on the transfer,” Sparks Vice Chairman Randy Roxas told InterAKTV.

Roxas said that Cañas will be a big boost to the Sparks, especially on the defensive end where Loyola has had issues during the past two seasons that saw finish third each time.

“Joaco is a quality player and a professional. He will give us more options on our backline,” Roxas said.

Aside from Cañas, Loyola also secured the services of former Stallion players forward Lee Joo Young and midfielder Lee Won Hyung.

Cañas arrived in the country to join Stallion last year together with fellow Spanish player Sanchez, his teammate in Spain’s third division side CF Internacional de Madrid.

They helped Stallion win the Cup and League titles last season.

Cañas expressed on Twitter his excitement to join the Sparks.

“I am happy to announce that i will be @MeralcoSparks player this coming season. Really excited to wear my new jersey soon,” Cañas wrote on his account.

Despite what some stupid writers have been saying and quoting about Rufo and StallionFC, none of them are true. Rufo is not a free agent. Rufo has an existing contract with StallionFC. Before Sept 3, we never received any offers from any club for the services of Rufo.

We are in negotiations with GlobalFC for the services of Rufo Sanchez. Until those negotiations are final, Rufo Sanchez is still a player of StallionFC.

The article written by Roy Moore is again inaccurate and full of hot air. That's the problem when he does not go straight to the source. He never interviewed us or even asked us any questions about Rufo Sanchez or our lineup.

Through all this hoopla with Rufo Sanchez, StallionFC remained quite and professional. We will not be distracted by what biased reporters write about us. We have been purposely training for the past 3 weeks in Barotac Nuevo. Our purpose being, to defend both our titles.

Stallion: We still own Sanchez

CLAIMING that his team still has rights over Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez, coach Ernie Nierras of United Football League champion Stallion said he is willing to listen for offers from teams wanting the services of last season’s league top scorer.

With the UFL Cup less than two months away, teams are shoring up their rosters and Sanchez, who scored 18 goals last season, could be the biggest player available in the market.

“He is still a Stallion player and we are waiting for offers from clubs that are interested in acquiring him,” said Nierras, who steered Stallion to a rare Cup and League double for the first time last season.

“So far, nobody has talked to me (regarding Rufo). We don’t understand why everybody is assuming that he’s no longer with the team,” added Nierras, whose squad has started preparations for the coming season with a training camp in Iloilo.

But Sanchez, who is still taking a break in Spain, announced on Twitter that he is now a free agent, insisting that his contract with Stallion ended last week.

The Spanish striker was loaned to Global for a month last July, seeing action in the Singapore Cup, where he scored two goals in the two-leg quarterfinal duel against DPMM Brunei.

Global has actually expressed interest in acquiring Sanchez on a permanent deal.

“If he’s a free agent, then we are interested in getting his services,” said Global owner Dan Palami.

“He can be a big help to the team as seen in the Singapore Cup and with Global preparing for more tournaments overseas, he will certainly play an important role for us if we sign him.”

Stallion-Sta. Lucia reclaims top spot in UFL

STALLION-Sta. Lucia turned to its other reliables in hacking out a 4-3 victory over Green Archers United Thursday night to regain the lead in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
Joaco Cañas, Kim Hyo, Nathan Alquiros, and Diego Barrera emerged the goal scorers for the team that usually relies on two of the league's top scorers in Rufo Sanchez and Lee Joo Young as the Stallions increased their point total to 27, two ahead of Global.
Cañas, the Spanish center-back, scored a header 10 minutes into the game to open the scoring for the defending UFL Cup champions, who were without coach Ernie Nierras, who attended a wedding in Boracay.
Chieffy Caligdong scored for the second straight game, sneaking in a volley right before halftime to knot the count and set the stage for a see-saw affair.
Kim converted a free kick that was rewarded after the Archers' Shapay tripped Young, before Alquiros scored off the rebound as the Stallions appeared ready to pull away in the second half.
But the Archers saw a glimmer of hope after Dodong Villareal scored on a long-range effort off a corner from Jovanie Simpron.
Caught napping on defense, however, the Archers surrendered a quick goal courtesy of Barrera right in the Stallions' next offensive possession.
With a two-goal lead, the Stallions were able to afford a late goal from Agbayomi Olowoyeye of the Archers, a move which didn't sit well with Stallion goalkeeper Wilson Muñoz.
“Nag-relax kami sa last twenty minutes. Buti na lang naka-goal pa kami kundi talo pa,” the Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo-born Muñoz lamented.
The Archers remained in eighth place with seven points.

Stallions seek solo second spot against Nomads

STALLION-Sta. Lucia tries to bounce back from a tough loss to a shorthanded Global side as it squares off against Nomads on Thursday in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.

The erstwhile co-leader that slid to third place after a close 1-0 defeat that snapped their six-game winning streak two weeks ago face Nomads with the goal of moving to solo second place ahead of Loyola Meralco.

Led by Spanish standouts in striker Rufo Sanchez and center back Joaco Cañas, the UFL Cup champions are favored in their 5:15 encounter with Nomads, a club composed of expatriates and part-time players.

But the Stallions need to be wary as they take on an opponent that is coming off a three-week rest and also aching to recover from a 5-0 loss to the Sparks.

A defeat for fourth-running Nomads will give Kaya a chance to vault past them in the 10-team standings.

In fifth place with nine points in seven games, Kaya faces struggling Philippine Air Force at 7:30 p.m.

The Airmen, former two-time UFL champions, are currently at the bottom of the pile, still winless in seven games with a goal difference of -21.

STALLION-Sta. Lucia seeks to keep pace with the leaders when it faces Philippine Air Force Thursday in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.



Thriving under a new system that suits fine a team lacking in defensive rotation, the reigning UFL Cup champions have been on a roll in the early part of the season by winning their first four games, the latest a 2-1 win over Kaya last week.

And the Stallions, three points behind frontrunner Global with 12 points, hope to sustain the streak against the Airmen in their 7:30 p.m. meeting.

“We’re a little bit hesitant still with our movements but they are starting to understand what we are trying to do. It’s a learning process for us,” Stallions coach Ernie Nierras said as he continues to rely on Spanish stalwarts Rufo Sanchez and Joaco Cañas, as well as Filipino skipper Balut Doctora.

The Ian Araneta-led Airmen, still reeling from the departure of stalwart Chieffy Caligdong, hope to finally barge in the win column after starting the season with three losses, including a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Green Archers United in their last game.


Nomads, with 10 points in five matches, tries to land a spot in the top three of the standings when it takes on PSG earlier at 5:15 p.m.

Currently in the midst of a back-breaking schedule, Nomads will play its third game in six days against a PSG side that’s also aching for a breakthrough after four straight losses.

As if the string of setbacks are not enough, adding to PSG’s woes is the case of booter Gerald Orcullo, who was arrested, along with two others, last week for alleged drug pushing.

Will home game be an advantage? This will be tested and proved as Negros Occidental Football Association’s Ceres Football Club, PFF-Smart Club Championship Visayas leader, plays a tough first game assignment against 2012 UFL Cup’s champion Stallion FC on Sunday, January 13, at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Ceres FC carries an impressive record in the regional qualifying last year by beating Queen City FC of Cebu, 1-nil, on Aldrin Dolino’s lone goal in the 71st minute while it demolished Leyte FC, 10-0, with Korean Yoon Byeong Jun and Dolino spearheading Ceres with three goals apiece.
Against the Stallions, the host squad will banner keepers Korean Hyoun Jae Hun and Jurex Replentes; skipper Jason Cordova, Lemuel Unabia, Antony, Abelardo Solinas, Jose Emmanuel Diel, Bagiuoro, Dolino, Jayson Panhay, Joel Bedia, Treyes, Richard Sumabong, Angelo Bahoyan, John Timothy Bolo, Joshua Beloya, and Koreans Choi Gun Hee, Yoon, Yu Young Jin, Hyoun Jae Hun, Kim Jung Mook, and Sim Hyoung Min.

The champion squad is anticipated to be boosted by veteran booters from Barotac Nuevo led by Ruben Doctora as well as several Korean nationals and Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez from Spanish third division side Internacionale de Madrid CF.

United Football League squad Penson Stallion Giligan’s added key players to bolster its campaign for the upcoming season.
The team signed Azkals member Jason de Jong and took in defender Carlos Canas Joaquin Garcia and forward Rufino Sanchez on loan from Spanish third division side CF Internacional de Madrid.
“The two CF Madrid players are important (for us) to finish higher (in the standings),” Stallion managing coach Ernie Nierras told InterAKTV. “For De Jong, I will use his natural position as a holding midfielder.”
De Jong was initially offered a slot by Stallion before trying out for Ayr United FC, a second division club in Scotland. However, his stint with the Scottish side didn’t push through.
Meanwhile, Garcia and Sanchez were part of the CF Madrid squad which defeated a selection of players from the Philippine team and the UFL in a charity match last January.
Led by former national team striker Reuben Doctora Jr., Stallion finished fourth out of the ten teams in Lesgue play last season.

United Football League squad Stallion Giligan’s handed the Guam national men’s national football team its third defeat in the Philippines after notching a 3-1 victory in a friendly match Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
After leading 1-0 at halftime courtesy of forward Jovanie Simpron’s goal, Stallion waxed hot in the second half sparked by goals from Lee Joo Young and Park Bo Bae to grab a comfortable 3-0 cushion.
Guam salvaged a goal late in the match, but it was not enough to overcome Stallions, which currently sits at the fourth place in the UFL Division One standings.
The loss caps the Matao’s week-long training tour in the country in preparation for the East Asian Football Championships in July.
Guam yielded all of its matches, losing to the Azkals last Tuesday, 3-0, and UFL title contenders Global, 5-3, last Thursday.
