Younghusbands settle score as Team James edges out Team Phil in Clear Dream Match III

By Karlo Sacamos

THE older brother had the final say.
James Younghusand finally put an end to his sibling rivalry against younger brother Phil as Team James turned back Team Phil, 1-0, in the Clear Dream Match 3 on Saturday night at the University of Makati Stadium.
A header from Joaco Cañas proved to be the difference in the competitive third and final edition of the all-star charity match.
Cañas fittingly emerged the MVP and best defender for Team James, bolstered by Manchester United striker Andy Cole.
Even with another former United great Paul Scholes as its reinforcement, Team Phil failed to find the back of the net no thanks to an impenetrable defense anchored by eventual best goalkeeper Roland Sadia.
The match was marred by a head injury sustained by Phil Younghusband, who was readily brought to the hospital.
"I'm really happy my team won, but I hope my brother is okay," James Younghusband said of Phil, who was caught in a head-on collision with Dodong Villareal during a battle for a 50-50 ball.
Team Phil conjured more attempts, including one from Kenshiro Daniels in the first half.
Scholes brandished the playmaking that made him one of the best midfielders of his time as he made one pinpoint pass in the second half to Phil Younghusband, who had a clear scoring opportunity before getting fouled.
Cole, the second-highest goal-scorer in English Premier League history, nearly found the back of the net, only for his on-target shot to be denied by Sadia in the 72nd minute, earning Team James a corner, which set the stage for Cañas’ winner.
Team James swept the individual awards as Izzo El-Habib was adjudged Best Striker, while Greatwich took home Best Midfielder honors.

Battle lines drawn as Phil banks on Paul Scholes, James relies on Andy Cole in Clear Dream Match III

By Karlo Sacamos
JAMES and Phil Younghusband are convinced they have the reinforcement who is the perfect fit to their contrasting styles of play on Saturday in the defining Clear Dream Match 3 at the University of Makati Stadium.
After getting more online votes than James, Phil earned the right to pick first between Manchester United legends Andy Cole and Paul Scholes, who will both spice up the final edition of the all-star football match that will, once and for all, settle the score on the Younghusband brothers’ rivalry.
Kickoff is set at 7:30 p.m.
The celebrated siblings split their two matches, with Phil drawing first blood with a 5-1 victory in 2012, before James avenged his setback with a 4-1 triumph last year.
And as a striker who thrives on top, Phil picked the 39-year-old Scholes, considered as one of his era’s best midfielders who can supply him goals, over Cole, a fellow forward.
“He (Scholes) can complement me. With Andy, it might be heavy up front,” Phil admitted on Friday on the eve of the charity event for the benefit of Tuloy sa Don Bosco foundation.
James was left without a choice but to select Cole, the second-highest scorer in English Premier League history with 187 goals under his belt .
The mandatory pick is turning out to be a blessing in disguise for the midfielder.
“I may not be seen in the headlines as much as my brother because Phil’s the one who taps in the ball and gets all the glory and I’m  the one who does all the hard work,” James said with a laugh. “I make him look good.”
Then he turned serious.
“It’s (facilitating) my strength,” James said. “I’m sticking to my strengths and I know if I get the ball into the box, Andy Cole will finish it off.”
It’s not only from Scholes and Cole where Phil and James will get their playmaking and firepower as the brothers each have a loaded 21-man roster bannered by Azkals and United Football League standouts at their disposal.
“It might go to extra time and then penalties and it’s really going to be dramatic,” James predicted. “The players involved this year, there’s just so much talent and it’s too close to call.”
“I’m a bit nervous with what’s at stake. But I’m quietly confident at the same time,” said the 26-year-old Phil, who is motivated by simply beating his older brother.
“This is bragging rights for life. If I win, James will never hear the end of it,” he said with a smile.

Proceeds of the match will go to Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation.

8 city booters make cut in three-day Manila camp

By Merle Dawn S. Comidoy
Saturday, April 5, 2014

EIGHT players from Davao City made the cut to join the three-day Clear Manchester United Football Camp in Manila on April 25 to 27 following the UFL (United Football League) Clear Dream Match Mindanao tryouts held here recently.

Selected were Leo Abunas, Rocky Custodio, Darrius Joseph Diamante, Yoshiharu Koizumi, Jomar Acedo, Randy Josef Inguillo, Jeffril Cabaral and Stephen Anotado who emerged the top eight players of the Mindanao qualifying. They will join other qualifiers from Cebu (Central Visayas), Iloilo (Western Visayas) and National Capital Region (NCR) to be trained by Manchester United Football Club coaches.

Clear brand manager Drew Copuyoc, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said that the camp aims to grow football in the Philippines.

“We want to get more people to play football because Filipinos do have lots of potentials in the sport,” Copuyoc said.

He said that the camp will enhance the skills of the young football players because they will be trained by credible coaches.

“This is a good way to discover new talents of the next generation of football stars. The qualifiers will really learn a lot from the legends and hopefully after five years they will be able to play in the national football team,” he said.

The yearly Clear Dream Match is on its third year. More football events will be slated this year to boost the participation of the youth.

UFL Begins Try Outs For Clear-Manchester United Football Camp In Cebu

Tomorrow morning, the United Football League will begin the first of four scheduled try-outs around the Philippines, in the search for the 32 most promising players in the country. Staring 7:00am, 100 footballers from Cebu will be put through rigorous drills and exercises at the Aboitiz Field to identify the region’s best eight talents who will be given the privilege to participate in the first ever Clear-Manchester United Football Camp in April.
In the first phase, players will be tested on ther Agility, Speed, Dribbling, Shooting, Passing, and Heading by both UFL and Cebu coaches. A special goalkeeping station will also be set up, where Cebu’s best young shot stoppers will be put through their paces. In the afternoon session, with the pool cut in half, those remaining will be tested tactically – seeing how they adapt to playing in various formations.
Spearheading the Cebu try-outs will be Hans Smit, Technical Director of Green Archers United Globe, with the help of Francis Ramires, and Dino Musni of the Cebu Football Association.
“This is a first time project for the UFL, and everybody’s is very excited. We have to thank the CFA for accommodating us. This is another welcome development for the UFL after last year’s school tour. It’s a great opportunity to reach out and let young talents know that they are not going unnoticed,” said UFL Technical Director Ritchie Gannaban.
In charge of handling the drills and rating the hopefuls will be top-notch coaches from the UFL, most of whom have had experience representing the Philippines in the Men’s National Team. Pachanga’s Alvin Ocampo, Stallion’s Marjo Allado, Loyola’s Gil Talavera, Green Archers’ Lolong Valencia, and Manila Jeepney’s Jayr Judal have all flown from Manila to ensure only the very best are selected to experience Manchester United Soccer School’s elite level of training. Cebu Dynamo’s Dennis Penalosa, Cebu Queen City United’s Allan Medalla and St. Therese’s Tirso Ramon Roa will also be playing integral roles, handling the agility, dribbling, and heading stations, respectively.
The four-legged program, which will also see try-outs held in Iloilo, Davao, and Metro Manila is the first program initiated with the Philippine Football Federation outside of the National Capital Region.
“This can be a template for future provincial football associations to use in identifying quality football talents. This advanced try-out model that Hans Smit has created is designed really for the very best to stand out and be identified,” said PFF Representative Cyril Dofitas.

Manchester United legends Paul Scholes, Andy Cole spice up final Clear Dream Match

By Karlo Sacamos

TWO legends from one of the world’s biggest football teams spice up the third and final edition of the Clear Dream Match as Manchester United greats Paul Scholes and Andy Cole join the celebrity all-star game on June 7.
After Fabio Cannavaro and Dennis Wise, it’s the turn of Scholes and Cole this year when Phil and James Younghusband settle the score once and for all after the celebrated brothers split the first two events.
Organizers have yet to finalize the venue of the match.
“This is the decider,” said James Younghusband, whose team, bolstered by the Italian legend Cannavaro won last year, 4-1, to avenge its 1-5 loss to Team Phil in 2012.
James and his brother said they don’t mind who between Scholes and Cole they get to play with this time, as both international booters have similarly put up established careers with the renowned English club.
The 39-year-old Scholes played for around two decades for Manchester United and is regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation, hanging up his boots last year after coming out of retirement in 2012.
The 42-year-old Cole, on the other hand, has the second most goals in English Premier League history with 187 strikes after playing for numerous clubs, the most with Man U, where he suited up for six years.
Aside from the two international stars, the Younghusband brothers will have 16 players in each team from the top 50 United Football League players available for selection in the draft on May 10.
Online voting at cleardreammatch.com.ph started Monday and will end on May 6, according to Clear brand manager Drew Copuyoc.
Six lucky amateur players will also be chosen from the nationwide tryouts to be held in Davao, Cebu, Iloilo, as well as Manila for the charity match, proceeds of which will go once again to the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation.
“Clear has done a good job in helping develop the sport in the country,” Phil Younghusband said.

Team James settles score against Team Phil in Clear Dream rematch

Karlo Sacamos

TEAM James settled its score against Team Phil as it rolled to a 4-1 victory in the Clear Dream Match 2 on a rainy Saturday night at the University of Makati pitch.
James Younghusband’s squad atoned for a 1-5 defeat against the same team last year as it pounced on the undermanned opposition that played with only 10 men most of the game after an early ejection of a teammate.
Having a world-class defender in Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro also aided Team James' cause and limited the scoring of Team Phil, which had the presence of Chelsea icon Dennis Wise.
Izzo El-Habib shone brightest for Team James with a brace on the way to being named best striker and MVP.
Three other Team James players received individual awards, with Yves Ashime copping best defender honors, Saba Garmaroudi best goalkeeper, and Misagh Bahadoran voted as Greenwich Favorite Player of the Game.
Chris Greatwich was the lone Team Phil individual awardee, earning the Best Midfielder award.
“We won, but the real winner is Philippine football and the beneficiaries,” James said as half of the proceeds of the charity all-star game will go to the victims of Typhoon Maring, with the other half to the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation.
“We would’ve won if we didn’t play with just ten men,” said Phil, whose team got crippled after teammate Rodrigue Nembot was sent off for a dangerous tackle barely 15 minutes into the game.
“At kung hindi pangit `yung weather,” the Filipino-British strike star added, trying his best to speak in Tagalog.
Clear brand manager Drew Copuyoc was pleased with the turnout of the fans, who braved the rain and still filled the stadium despite the heavy downpour.

Younghusbands get the all-clear for Dream Match

By Karlo Sacamos

PHIL and James Younghusband have assured that there will be no scheduling conflicts this time between their national team duty and their off-field commitments.
The celebrated brothers once again headline the Clear Dream Match, the same charity all-star football game last year which caused a scheduling conflict with the Azkals' US training camp that led to the Younghusbands being left out of the Peace Cup roster.
A year later, the Filipino-British booters are happy that there will be such problems this time.
“There’s no scheduling conflict this time,” James Younghusband told Spin.ph on Saturday during the Clear Dream Match Draft at the SM Megamall Events Center.
“Football is still developing in the country. Obviously there are different schedules, different goals, and it’s about merging those goals together, and everyone uniting, forgetting about the politics and trying to get the same goal to develop football in the country,” James added.
Last year, the Clear Dream Match coincided with the Azkals’ US training camp in August, which the Younghusbands missed. As a consequence, they were excluded from the Peace Cup roster the following month.
“We learned things from last year,” Phil said. “The communication with boss Dan (Palami), coach (Michael) Weiss, the PFF, our management, Clear, and everyone has been amazing this year, so it should avoid any (conflicts) like that.”
“They’ve been very understanding,” added Phil, the country’s top international scorer. “I’m sure they know what this Clear Dream Match does to football. And we owe a lot to the Azkals and we’re also looking forward to the game against Indonesia.”
The Azkals, who climbed this month to their best-ever world ranking at 141st, return to action on Wednesday when they face Indonesia at the opponent’s turf in a Fifa friendly that the Younghusbands are going to make.
“I’m very thankful to the PFF,” James said. “They didn’t schedule (an Azkals activity on the same day as the Clear event). They’ve scheduled at least a game (earlier) to get the team together and give an opportunity to the Under-23 players to show what they’ve got and show that they should be playing in the SEA Games.”
OJ Porteria, Jeff Christiaens, Marwin Angeles, Mark Hartmann, Joshua Beolya, Patrick Deyto, Raymark Fernandez, Paolo Bugas, and Amani Aguinaldo are the U-23 standouts who have been called up against Indonesia.

Football icons Cannavaro and Wise to suit up in Clear Dream Match

By Karlo Sacamos

WO football legends are set to grace the Clear Dream Match when the charity All-Star game holds its second edition on August 24 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Fabio Cannavaro and Dennis Wise are expected to spice up the event as they will be among the draftees whom Phil and James Younghusband are allowed to pick for the fundraising match.
Cannavaro is a former Real Madrid standout who is best known for skippering Italy in capturing the World Cup in 2006.
Wise, on the other hand, is a former Chelsea skipper who has won two FA Cups, a English Premier League Cup, and a Uefa Cup winners trophies for the squad.
“This doesn’t happen very often. I’m very proud and so lucky to have this opportunity to play with them,” Phil said on Wednesday during the launch of the event at the K-Pub BBQ restaurant at Bonifacio Global City.
Along with Phil, James suited up for Chelsea’s training team in their youth careers and the brothers had the chance to watch Wise play.
“We used to watch Wise play all the time. He is like a legend to us,” James said. “But I’d be honored to pick either. They’re all great leaders.”
The two distinguished booters are shoo-ins in the match, but the rest of the draftees will have to be voted in by the fans, starting on July 10 on Clear’s Facebook page.
The draft pool contains 50 of the best professional, collegiate, and celebrity booters in town, like national team mainstays Chieffy Caligdong, OJ Porteria, Chris Greatwich, and Carli de Murga.
Once the voting ends, the Younghusbands, playing on opposite sides again, will pick their players from the draft set August 10.
The proceeds of the match, won by Team Phil, 5-1, last year, will again go to the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation.

Team Phil routs Team James

Karl Decena, InterAKTV
Philippine football star Phil Younghusband edged his brother James in their first encounter against each other, firing three goals to carry Team Phil to a 5-1 victory over Team James in the CLEAR Dream Match Saturday night at the University of Makati.
The younger Younghusband scored the first goal of the match, finding the back of the net at the 18th minute to give his team the early lead.
Phil continued his rampage moments after, firing a goal from outside the box to put his team up 2-0 at the 22nd minute.
Ossenyou Diop then scored at the 42nd minute to cap the first half dominance of Team Phil, which grabbed a comfortable 3-0 cushion at the half.
Team James trimmed the lead at the start of the second half courtesy of a goal by its captain in the 62nd minute.
But Team Phil quickly countered as Yannick Tuason of Kaya FC scored at the 71st minute.
Phil then sealed the victory for his team after bagging a hat trick at extra time.
Despite starring in the match, Phil still lauded his teammates for the victory.
“We had a very good mixture of players who played very well,” Phil said.
James, meanwhile, remained proud of his team despite the loss.
“We still played well today. We kept fighting, but it wasn’t enough,” James said.
Apart from seeing celebrities and football stars play in the match, fans were also treated by a performance by singer Rico Blanco during the halftime break.
After the match, CLEAR handed awards to players who stood out in the charity match. Loyola Meralco Sparks player and Team Phil member Park Min Ho won the Most Valuable Player award, while teammate Saba Garmaroudi of Kaya bagged the Best Goalkeeper award.
Yves Ashime of Pachanga, also from Team Phil, bagged the Best Defender award, while teammate Eric Tai of Philippine Volcanoes got the People’s Choice award.
Team James player Mikko Mabanag of Ateneo football team, meanwhile, got the Best Midfielder award.
Proceeds of the celebrity football match go to Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation in Alabang.

No Brotherly Love

The partnership of brothers Phil and James Younghusband has been undoubtedly solid. After all, they have been teammates from their teenage years in England until the height of their stardom with the national football team.
However, when asked whose team would be better when they battle against each other in a charity football match, neither man showed any brotherly love.
“It has to be mine,” Phil and James both said at the same time.
And with their teams boasting football stars and celebrities, it sure is hard to tell.
The two popular Azkal members drafted their teammates Saturday at the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation in Alabang for the upcoming CLEAR Dream Match, which will see the brothers go head-to-head for the first time in a competitive football match.
After winning a coin toss, Phil drafted first and selected Kaya goalkeeper Saba Garmaroudi. Other players drafted to Team Phil are Park Min Ho, Byeong Jeong Yeol, Davide Cortina, Anto Gonzales, Dexter Versario and Roxy Dorlas of the Loyola Meralco Sparks; Armand del Rosario and Yannick Tuason of Kaya FC; Freddy Gonzalez, Janrick Soriano, Alvin Ocampo and Yves Ashime of Pachanga FC; Ojay Clarino and Wilson Munoz of Penson Stallion Giligan’s; Paolo Bediones and Daniel Matsunaga of Team Socceroo; Eric Tai of the Philippine Volcanoes, actor Rafael Rossel and radio jock Tony Toni.
Meanwhile, Kaya defender Anton del Rosario was selected by James as the second overall pick. His teammates also include Nate Burkey, Eric Dagroh, Jonah Romero and Nico Bolzico of Kaya; Patrick Bocobo and Patrick Deyto of Green Archers United; Raymark Fernandez and Andrew Santiago of Diliman Victory Liner; Patrick Ozaeta and Ref Cuaresma of the Sparks; Ronald Ong of Pachanga, coach Rudy del Rosario of the Philippine team to the Homeless World Cup, Andrew Wolff of the Volcanoes, Mikko Mabanag of Ateneo football team, Philippine Womens University standout Jolo Durian, model Marvin Kiefer, actor Jake Cuenca and radio jock Slick Rick.
Team Phil will have UFL president Randy Roxas as its assistant coach, while Team James will be helped from the sidelines by coach Vince Santos of the Sparks and Fr. John Cordero of the Marian Missionaries of the Holy Cross.
The draft consisted of three rounds, with Phil and James taking turns on selecting 10 players in the first round from a pool of 40 comprised of United Football League stars and celebrities. Then, both drew lots in the second round and chose wildcard picks in the third to complete their respective rosters.
Proceeds of the celebrity football match will go to Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation in Alabang.
The CLEAR Dream Match is slated on August 25 at the University of Makati and will be aired on AKTV.
