Fifa seat for nonong

By Cedelf P. Tupas

Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta is poised to land a seat in the powerful International Football Federation (Fifa) Council following the decision of Kuwaiti official Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah to withdraw from the election.
Araneta confirmed earlier reports that Sheikh Ahmad has also resigned from the Fifa council after he was linked to a fraud case involving Richard Lai, the Fifa official who was banned for bribery.
Araneta, Zhang Jian of China and Mong Gyu Chung of South Korea can secure the three council seats for Asia if they get majority votes from the 46-member AFC during its congress on Sunday in Bahrain.
“Its only a matter of formality,” said Araneta.
