Dan Palami left to rue Azkals lack of focus, wasted chances in costly loss to Yemen

By Karlo Sacamos
PHILIPPINE men’s football team manager Dan Palami insisted the Azkals hardly showed complacency in their 1-0 loss to Yemen in their World Cup qualifying match on Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Azkals seemed to lack the sense of urgency despite being left in must-win situation in their remaining three matches, allowing the lower-ranked Yemenis to create clear-cut chances throughout.
Instead, Palami blamed the lack of focus against a squad ranked 32 places below the Filipino booters that did them in.
“I don’t think so, because we were able to create those chances,” the Azkals boss said when asked if the Azkals were complacent. “It was that lapse in concentration, which also happened in the early stages of the game.”
The lack of focus was evident in the entire match as the Azkals allowed the Yemenis plenty of counterattacks after going back on defense late.
“It’s a very disappointing result,” Palami said. “Much luck was on their side as well. But that what we should be preparing for: those counters.”
One counter resulted in Ahmed Al-Sarori’s marginal goal seven minutes before injury time.
“You should play one-hundred percent for ninety minutes plus extension time; that’s how you win games,” Palami stressed.
While they lacked focus on defense, The Azkals’ offense likewise left something to be desired.
“If you don’t convert all those chances that are presented to you, then there’s no way you can win the game,” Palami said.
The Azkals seemed to have converted their two attempts in the second half, only to be saved by goalkeeper Mohammed Ayash.
“I actually thought the ball was in already, at least in one of those near goals. But unless the referee says it’s in, it’s out,” Palami said.

  1. Sorry PFF this is your doing as well as Dan Palami for trusting so much the Fil Foreigners who are sub par except for Shrock and Patiño. Dakay as the chairman of Youth teams and Gastanes.

    1. Agree.
Until when will people realise that this guy is doing more damage and good?
The first part he did was good.
After that he did more damage as he try to consolidate his status in PFF and try to cheat his way in all tournament including UFL

    2. I hope that in the PFF elections today the PFA presidents will think long-term solutions to this and other predicaments of the sport. Removing Araneta is a start. He has done great things for the sport, but I think that he must pass the reins to someone more capable. We need someone who can effectively promote football in the country. It is now time that we limit our reliance to our overseas players. It has been five years, local players are taking center-stage, and their lack of opportunity to join the national team is still there.

Since today is election day for PFF, who do you think is better suited for the job?

    3. Limit the reliance on overseas based players? lol! So what if it's been five years? That's nothing in terms of developing football especially with the state Philippine football is in!

Which local players do you really think would get ahead of these overseas based players? There's hardly any!

    4. Agreed. Local-based players are still lagging in almost every phase of the international game. Just look at Deyto. He got his chance when Neil was in the doghouse. Did he seize that opportunity? No!...and now he's an afterthought. Wala na.

    5. Still lagging yung mga locals dahil PFF didn't give them a chance or training abroad including friendly games or exchange players program in Europe or South America kaya nagkaganito tayo.

    7. Mas ulol ka dahil you're more than a coward na gustong umalis sa bansa ito para iwasan ang mga problema imbes na solusyonan. Ang babaw ng utak mo brod kaya dumarami ang corruption dahil only a few good men stand up against it.

  2. Mr Palami not complacency and lack of focus.

the problem is our national booters are under pressure thats why they choke at the 2nd half.

idagdag pa yung fitness level and conditioning ng national booters since Bahrain home match. 2-0

tapos ngayon 0-1...bakit ba nawala na yung training camp and friendly match bago sila sumabak laban sa Bahrain and sa home game laban sa Yemen?

preparation and application yung friendly game bago sumabak.

yung mga European based pwede silang i call up sa home game ng Uzbekistan dahil mas malapit sila dun.

homegrown or UFL Based para hindi jet lag, drain and burnout pag sumabak sa home game sa Rizal stadium against Nokor...kung Uzbeks yung mga European based natin para walang problema sa pag adjust sa climate dahil sa March 2016 winter pa.

  5. We can't blame anybody actually. Reliance on foreign players unfortunately is still a must at this time. Had we fielded all local based players, sigurado tambak tayo.

Main problem noticeable is the fitness level. eh pano, our local league ended months before. kung makikita niyo, mga Global FC players lang ang medyo fit (Aguinaldo, Sato,) and when Bahadoran came in, dun medyo bumilis ulit ang laro. all the rest were sluggish esp Steuble and Ramsay. sablay talaga..
