Ceres FC hopes for favorable result in AFC Cup draw

By Jerome Galunan Jr.

Following their heartbreaking experience in Maldives during the last Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup, the Bacolod City-based Ceres La Salle FC is hoping to get a favorable result this time when the official draw commences on December 10-12 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“Hopefully we will get a good draw for AFC Cup. I think the Ceres team now can surprise a lot of teams in AFC,” said club director and mentor Ali Rojas Go. “There are strong teams in AFC Cup while there are some teams we can really beat,” he added.
“So the draw will be a big factor here. Our target is to make it to the next round of the group stage; this stage is a knockout round. And with the help of our home games in Negros, we can have a good chance,” he added.
The reigning United Football League (UFL) champions have resumed training at the North Football pitch in Talisay City recently. The team is also preparing well for the UFL’s 2015-2016 Season.
Go reiterated that the club will undergo rigid preparations for these two major tournaments next year, where Ceres FC will play 3 home matches in the AFC Cup elimination.
Further, the Ceres FC management is still in the process of signing up new players to strengthen the club’s competitiveness for the upcoming tournaments. “Right now, we are finalizing the details in taking in these players. We will reveal it as soon as everything is complete,” Go said.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) President Ricky Yanson said they have to ensure that the hosting, including the football facility, meets the requirement of the AFC./WDJ

Singapore Cup : Third Place match : Global Fc 1-3 DPMM Fc

Wasps Keen To Beat Global To Cap Off Good Season

Written by: Shawn Lim
RHB Singapore Cup Third/Fourth placing: Brunei DPMM vs Global FC
(Friday, 27 November, 5:00pm, Jalan Besar Stadium)

Brunei DPMM will be looking to finish their season on a winning note when they play Global FC in their RHB Singapore Cup Third/Fourth placing clash on Friday evening at Jalan Besar Stadium.
The Wasps, who are fresh off winning the Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League 2015 title, saw their hopes of doing the double vanished after losing 4-3 on aggregate to Home United in their semi-final second-leg match.
DPMM coach Steve Kean expressed his disappointment at not being able to lift another trophy, but feels that the loss will motivate his players to beat Global and cap off a good season.
“We rather be playing in the finals, than in the third/fourth placing match and we are disappointed in that because we had a good season,” said the Scot.
“We are disappointed in our performance against Home United the other night.. we are disappointed with the result because I thought we played well enough to at least take it to extra time.
“We got a controversial goal disallowed in the last minute that would take it to extra time, so we don't really need to motivate the players because we have set very, very high standards.
“They know now that no matter what game it is..what time this season, they have to try to perform to at least that standard, maybe even more. So the motivation for us is to finish strong and play the way we did for most of the season.”
However, Kean feels that Global will be tough to play against even though they lack match fitness, as they will have much fresher legs than the Wasps.
The Philippines team had not played a single competitive game after the first-leg defeat to Albirex Niigata (S) and their rustiness showed in the second leg when they lost 3-1 on aggregate to the Japanese side.
“We have actually the opposite challenge to (Global coach) Leigh Manson's, because we have played so many competitive games and we are looking for rest days,” said Kean.
“We played in the S.League then a few days later, we played in the (Singapore Cup) semi-final, so we actually don't need to train, but to rest and recover.
“Leigh is correct to say that their game against Albirex helped them increase their sharpness, but all we had to do was just recover and do swimming pool sessions and try to help them keep their fitness for the last time.
“Global pass the ball well, the players are going to press us, they try to dominate possession with good technical players, so I think this will be a really good game between both clubs.”
Meanwhile, Global coach Leigh Manson is eager to play against the Wasps as he feels that the new S.League champions will provide a good challenge for his players.
“We are looking for a strong finish to the season and we have the added incentive that Steve Kean's side are top of the Singapore League, so it is a good benchmark for us,” said the Scot.
“We prefer to play in the finals, but it is a good challenge for the players, something that we always strive for because we always want to raise our levels.
“We are excited to be playing the league's new champions tomorrow night.”
Manson is also looking forward to be the first Philippines side to finish as second-runner up in the Singapore Cup after making history in the AFC Cup this season.
“Global and Brunei have a little bit of history and we have not solved the problem of beating them yet,” he said.
“We can win this game and do what no other Philippines team have done and we did that in the AFC this year.
“We did a lot things that have never been done before - winning the first points in the 0-0 draw with Pahang where we showed the level that these players can play at.
“We take pride in being the first to do things, so we would like to be first team to finish beyond fourth place.”

The match will be streamed LIVE on Voxsports from 4:30pm. Click here to watch:

PFF coaches on scouting mission in US

By Cedelf P. Tupas

THE PHILIPPINE Football Federation has sent coaches to the United States to scout for fresh talents who can beef up the national women’s team in future tournaments.
PFF general secretary Ed Gastanes said technical director and former men’s team coach Aris Caslib and current women’s team mentor Buda Bautista are spearheading the “scouting mission” along with ex-women’s team coach Ernie Nierras.
The United States has been a rich source of talent with players having Filipino lineage beefing up the squad in past tournaments, including Joanna Houplin who plays for Seattle Sounders women in the US second division.
“Our goal is to qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup,” said Nierras.

Panaad eyed to host 2016 Suzuki Cup

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.

Following the successful staging of the recently-concluded Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart U22 Amateur Championship 2015, the Panaad Park and Stadium is reportedly eyed to co-host the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2016.
This was confirmed by Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) President Ricky Yanson Jr., adding they in PFF are talking about it but no definite decision out yet.
“That’s why I’m appealing to the people of Bacolod City and Negros Occidental to help promote football. PFF is also looking at our province and not only Metro Manila. Maybe this PFF-Smart tournament is a test on how capable we are in running such huge event. And I’m confident that we’re more than capable enough to handle the Suzuki Cup,” he added.
Yanson also pointed out that Iloilo will most likely serve as the tournament’s second turf as per requirement of the Suzuki Cup organizers. It was recalled that the historical Paglaum Stadium is no longer playable after business infrastructures were erected around it.
“We are looking at Iloilo to serve as co-host in this tournament. Anyway, it’s just an hour travel from here to the other island,” the NOFA prexy stressed.
When asked on the Philippine Stadium’s status, Yanson said he doesn’t have any idea what happened, though he is aware that the Bulacan-based field was the first to be inspected by the AFF to host the Suzuki Cup.
Regarding security measures, Yanson said they will have close coordination with the provincial government, police authorities, and other agencies involved to ensure the safety of everyone in the stadium during the event.
“This is one of the major concerns the football association should address after the recent Paris incident,” Yanson added.
Teams seeing action in next year’s Suzuki Cup will come from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines./WDJ

Scoreless draw against Cebu enough for NOFA to advance

Host Negros Occidental Football Association did not score a single goal against Cebu FA in their final match, but their lopsided victories against Negros Oriental FA (6-1) and Leyte FA (9-0), earlier, allowed them to take the No. 1 ranking in the regional qualifier and advance into the national finals of the PFF-Smart National U22 Amateur Championship next year.
The wins against NORFA and Leyte and the draw against Cebu gave NOFA a total of 7 points to finish the regional qualifier on top against the three other teams from the Visayas area.
Advancing into the national finals, slated January 16-21 next year at the Panaad, NOFA head coach John Carmona said their task is to ensure that the team is ready.
“I am happy with the outcome of the tournament but we need to address certain issues and make the necessary adjustments,” Carmona told reporters after the match against Cebu.
He said the unforced errors against Cebu FA can be attributed to the players' eagerness to score early in the match.
“We were too excited to score early in the game as Cebu played defensively and did some counters. Our players l need to learn to be patient and accurate,” Carmona said.
NOFA ‘s triumph in the regional qualifier was witnessed by the association president Ricky Yanson, who earlier encouraged the Negrenses to continue supporting the host team.
Yanson is the forefront of initiating programs that will develop more football talents in the province.
The members of the winning team are: Nessi Ramos, Joshua Dutosme, Aoki Harunori, Usman Ilimona, Charles Barberan, John Mark Jamelo, Regie Cisneros, Kent Guevarra and Jo Warren Bedia from University of St. La Salle;
Paolo Sanchez, Marivic Gancita and Randey Temana from UNO-Recoletors; and Gerald Paparone, Jasper Layagon, Jordan Junco, Diomar Carusaay, Joevanie Santos, Francis Jada Polvodrido, Angelo Frayle Ledesma, Kyle Bayabos, Von Loyd Baguioro and Ashley Pamiliar from Central Philippine State University-San Carlos.
Assisting Carmona in the coaching department are Dennis Penalosa, Jorwell Gines, Gus Rivas, and Carlo Andrew Demegillo.*NAB

Ceres FC resumes training for AFC, UFL tourneys

By Jerome Galunan Jr.

The Bacolod-based and reigning United Football League (UFL) Champion Ceres-La Salle FC has resumed their training at the North Football pitch in Talisay City ahead of the 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup and UFL’s 2015-2016 Season.
This was disclosed Thursday by club director and head coach Ali Bernard Go, who attended the opening of the PFF-Smart National U22 Amateur Championship at the Panaad Park and Stadium.
Go said the club will undergo rigid preparation for these two major tournaments next year where Ceres FC will play 3 home matches in the AFC Cup elimination.
The multi-titled mentor added that it’s an opportunity for the Bacolod side to bounce back from their heartbreaking loss to Maziya in the AFC Cup playoff match early this year.
Moreover, the Ceres FC management is still in the process of signing up new players to strengthen the club’s competitiveness for the upcoming tournaments. “Right now, we are finalizing the details in taking-in these players. We will reveal it as soon as everything is complete,” he added.
However, Go has not yet disclosed the identities of these players including their nationalities and playing positions on the team. “Right now, we are still negotiating with the concerned parties,” Go said.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) President Ricky Yanson disclosed that they will meet with the concerned agencies as well as the Ceres-La Salle FC to prepare the hosting of next year’s AFC Group Stage.
He added that they have to make sure that the football facility meets the requirement of the AFC. “We all know that AFC has set the requirements for us to meet,” the NOFA prexy stressed.
The Ceres-La Salle FC, for its part, is in full support of the NOFA team in the ongoing PFF-Smart National U22 Amateur Championship./WDJ

PFF - Smart U22 Championship qualifiers in Bacolod

PFF-Smart U22:Paparon hat-trick for NOFA’s back-to-back win

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.

Gerald Paparon fired 3 goals yesterday and led Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) to a lopsided 9-nil triumph over Leyte FA in Day 2 of the ongoing Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart U22 Amateur Championship Regional Qualifying 2015 at the Panaad Park and Stadium.
The San Carlos-hailed Paparon opened NOFA’s scoring spree in the 3rd minute as Aoki Harunori nailed the host’s second goal in the 6th minute followed by opening day top scorer Ilimona Usman in the 8th minute.
Having stunned by an early 3-goal advantage from the host-squad, the Leyte side tried to make some adjustments on their defenses to limit the Negrenses’ attacks.
However, NOFA seemed to be too much for the visiting team when Paolo Sanchez found his mark in the 12th minute to extend their lead while Paparon delivered his second in the 14th minute for an early 5-0 blast.
Leyte FA further tightened their defense to keep NOFA scorers from scoring a goal. But Paparon wasn’t done yet as he found the back of the net in the 45th minute to end the first half, 6-0.
In the second half, Usman had his second goal in the game after scoring in the 48th minute followed by Jordan Junco in the 52nd minute.
But before the referee blew his final whistle, Harunori managed to have his second goal and seal the game in the 90+4 minutes.
For NOFA head coach John Carmona, the first half was very convincing, while the second half could have been better. “I have reminded my players not to relax on defense as it may open some chances for the opponent to score,” he said.
Playing against Cebu later today, Carmona stressed that NOFA has the advantage, but advised his players to follow the game plan and minimize errors.

PFF-Smart U22: Usman fires 5 goals to lead NOFA’s first win

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.

Host-Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) was too much for the visiting Negros Oriental Football Association (NORFA) after it recorded a 6-1 blast in yesterday’s opener of the PFF-Smart National U22 Amateur Championship at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Diomar Caruscay opened the host’s scoring spree with an 8th minute goal before former University of St. La Salle standout and NORFA star, Charle Ralph Allan Dabao III, equalized the scoreboard in the 11th minute.
However, NOFA reinforcement Ilemona Usman came red hot with 5 goals – 4 in the first half. The Nigerian national beat his NORFA defenders to give NOFA a goal lead in the 31st minute.
Eight minutes later, Usman got his second goal from out of the box before hitting two more goals in the 42nd and 44th minutes to end the half at 5-1.
In the second half, both sides played slow due to the scorching heat at the Panaad stadium.
But before the referee blew his final whistle, Usman nailed an exclamation goal in the 90+4 to seal NOFA’s first win.
Cebu and Leyte FA were still playing at press time in the other scheduled game.
For NOFA mentor John Carmona, the win was a great start for the team. “We made some major adjustments in the early minutes after we had several misjudgments in our defense.
“Fortunately, the players well responded to the instructions. But the temperature in the second half caused our players to slow down,” he said.
Carmona further said that in their play against Leyte today, they would also make some adjustments to avoid making mistakes.
Meanwhile, NOFA president Ricky Yanson Jr. said that PFF’s decision to award the hosting rights to the provincial association was based on their capability to run the tournament and its strong fan base./WDJ

2 matches key to Azkals’ Asian Cup bid

By Cedelf P. Tupas

The Philippine Azkals got a bye in World Cup qualifying action Tuesday, but they’ll be keeping an eye on a couple of games that will impact their own campaign.
Group H leader North Korea hosts Bahrain in Pyongyang, while Uzbekistan clashes with Yemen in Doha, Qatar, with both matches equally crucial in deciding which teams will make the next round of World Cup qualifying.
The Azkals are in third, stuck at seven points from five matches so far, following their shocking 0-1 loss to underdog Yemen last Thursday at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

But while their fate is no longer in their hands as far as qualifying for the third round of WCQ is concerned, the Filipinos can still gain an outright berth in the third round of Asian Cup qualifying if they finish third in the group.
Victories by North Korea and Uzbekistan on Tuesday will shut the door on the Azkals in the next round of World Cup Qualifying.
It will also enhance the Azkals’ chances of keeping third spot with Bahrain breathing down the Azkals’ necks at fourth with six points and Yemen in fifth with just three points.
“We have to go back to our earlier expectation which is to make the Asian Cup in 2019,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami after the loss to Yemen.
The Asian Cup, which will be hosted by the United Arab Emirates, has been expanded from 16 to 24 teams.
The Azkals posted wins against Bahrain (2-1) and Yemen (2-0), held North Korea to a nil-nil standoff and lost to Uzbekistan (4-1) in the first-round matches.

NOFA ready for PFF-Smart regionals

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.

It’s all about pride.
This is the Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) squad’s battle cry as they face their Visayan counterparts in next week’s Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart U22 Amateur Championship Regional Qualifying 2015 at the Panaad Park and Stadium.
NOFA will be hosting teams from Negros Oriental FA, Leyte FA, and Cebu FA for the November 19-21 games, with the top team advancing in next year’s national finals – still at Panaad.
The eventual national champion may represent the country in international tournaments such as the Bolkiah Cup.
On Wednesday, NOFA led by association president Ricky Yanson Jr. presented their 22-man roster for the regional qualifying in a simple gathering at the Planta Bacolod Hotel and Residences.
The John Carmona-mentored side is led by skipper Nessi Ramos of University of St. La Salle alongside Joshua Dutosme, Aoki Harunori, Usman Ilimona, Charles Barberan, John Mark Jamelo, Regie Cisneros, Kent Guevarra and Jo Warren Bedia. Joining the team are University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos’ Paolo Sanchez, Marivic Gancita and Randey Temana; and provincial champion Central Philippine State University’s Gerald Paparon, Jasper Layagon, Jordan Junco, Diomar Carusaay, Joevanie Santos, Francis Jada Polvodrido, Angelo Frayle Ledesma, Kyle Bayabos, Von Loyd Baguioro and Ashley Pamiliar.
Helping out in the coaching task are Dennis Penalosa, Jorwell Gines, Gus Rivas, and Carlo Andrew Demegillo.
Yanson shared this tournament is an opportunity for the Bacolodnons and Negrenses to show their support for the home team. “I encourage everyone to come and support our team in this tournament. Let’s show everyone how much we love this sport,” he said.
The NOFA head also stressed that the regional qualifying game’s admission is free.
Meanwhile, Carmona said he’s confident his squad is at par with other teams.
Winner of the Visayas qualifying will join the top 3 teams from Mindanao and 4 others from Luzon to complete the 8 teams for the national finals on January 16-21, 2016 at the Panaad pitch.
Subsidies for food and accommodation of players are provided by PFF, revealed NOFA Gen-Sec Ronald Allan Treyes./

Araneta gets fresh mandate to lead PFF

By:

Former national team captain Mariano “Nonong” Araneta received a fresh mandate to lead Philippine football for the next four years, winning a second term unopposed during the 12th Philippine Football Federation Congress Friday at Century Park Hotel in Manila.
The athlete-turned-businessman, who is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Asian Football Confederation, has been at the helm in the PFF since November 2010 when he was unanimously voted by the PFF Congress to replace the late Jose Mari Martinez.
M’lang North Cotabato mayor Joselito Piñol was elected PFF vice president in the polls that also saw Lalaine Sarmiento of Quezon Province FA becoming the first female member of the PFF Board of Governors as representative of the women’s sector.

Speaking at a press conference after the Congress, Araneta said his priority will be the formation of a community-based national league which is expected to kick off in two years.
“The introduction of the new league in 2017 is a big task for us,” said Araneta. “That is the most important project that we have in mind for this term.”
Piñol who heads the North Cotabato FA said grassroots development remains a priority for the PFF as it tries to discover fresh talent who can be tapped to represent the country in the international level.
Dan Palami, the Leyte FA president who was also elected to the BOG, said the federation is faced with several challenges apart from the improvement of the national men’s team fondly called the Azkals.
“The big challenge is nurturing the interest in football and I think the institution of the national league certainly will spark interest on a regional based perspective,” said Palami, who also heads the national teams’ committee. “On a short term, we have to develop a strong marketing arm to market games to market sport and to attract more sponsors.”
Araneta said the hosting of the AFF Suzuki Cup next year should also spark interest for the sport.
“We should start preparations early and it should be a good occasion to focus showcase not just our football but our country,” said Araneta, referring to the most prestigious tournament in the region.

Azkals eye ‘ideal’ WCQ buildup

By Cedelf P. Tupas

With performances dropping in their past few games, the Philippine Azkals are aiming for a better buildup as they brace for a final push for a place in the next round of World Cup and Asian Cup qualifying.
Unable to sustain their strong start, the Azkals fell to third spot with seven points behind North Korea (13) and Uzbekistan (nine) in Group H, their hopes of reaching the next round hanging by a thread.
The top team in the group will move on to the third round while four best second placers from the eight groups will also advance while getting an outright spot in the 2019 Asian Cup. The third-placed team in the group will be assured of a third round spot in Asian Cup qualifying.

Preparations have been far from ideal for the Azkals in the last few matches with players linking up just a few days before matches. Several players travel from Europe where their clubs are based while local based standouts are currently in their off season in the league, hurting their fitness levels.
The Azkals also had to endure long travels to North Korea and Bahrain last month where they picked up only a single point from their two matches. The team was playing Yemen at press time.
“It’s been a learning experience for us, not just for the players but for management and the federation as well,” said team manager Dan Palami before the Azkals played Yemen last night. “We learned that even the smallest of detail like flight schedules could greatly impact our games. We have to handle this home and away format better.”
Palami said he plans to hold a camp overseas before the matches against Uzbekistan in Tashkent on March 24 and North Korea in Manila on March 29.
“We have to put ourselves in a position where there’s less stress for our players,” said Palami.
Azkals coach Thomas Dooley said details like league schedules and just having players together for at least a week should already boost the team’s chances of playing better.
“We still have a chance so it’s important that we prepare well in the last two matches,” said Dooley.
Captain Phil Younghusband, who missed the game against Yemen last night due to suspension, is confident the Azkals can pull off the improbable.
“Nothing’s impossible in football and we’ve shocked a few people before,” said Younghusband. “I wouldn’t put it against us with two games left and we want to do the best that we can, although knowing that it will be difficult with Uzbekistan and North Korea.”

Dan Palami left to rue Azkals lack of focus, wasted chances in costly loss to Yemen

By Karlo Sacamos
PHILIPPINE men’s football team manager Dan Palami insisted the Azkals hardly showed complacency in their 1-0 loss to Yemen in their World Cup qualifying match on Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Azkals seemed to lack the sense of urgency despite being left in must-win situation in their remaining three matches, allowing the lower-ranked Yemenis to create clear-cut chances throughout.
Instead, Palami blamed the lack of focus against a squad ranked 32 places below the Filipino booters that did them in.
“I don’t think so, because we were able to create those chances,” the Azkals boss said when asked if the Azkals were complacent. “It was that lapse in concentration, which also happened in the early stages of the game.”
The lack of focus was evident in the entire match as the Azkals allowed the Yemenis plenty of counterattacks after going back on defense late.
“It’s a very disappointing result,” Palami said. “Much luck was on their side as well. But that what we should be preparing for: those counters.”
One counter resulted in Ahmed Al-Sarori’s marginal goal seven minutes before injury time.
“You should play one-hundred percent for ninety minutes plus extension time; that’s how you win games,” Palami stressed.
While they lacked focus on defense, The Azkals’ offense likewise left something to be desired.
“If you don’t convert all those chances that are presented to you, then there’s no way you can win the game,” Palami said.
The Azkals seemed to have converted their two attempts in the second half, only to be saved by goalkeeper Mohammed Ayash.
“I actually thought the ball was in already, at least in one of those near goals. But unless the referee says it’s in, it’s out,” Palami said.

PH Azkals kiss World Cup bid goodbye after horror 1-0 home loss to Yemen

By Karlo Sacamos
THE Philippine men’s football team kissed its World Cup bid goodbye as it bowed to Yemen, 1-0, in their qualifying match on Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Azkals failed to capitalize on numerous golden chances, before surrendering a late goal against a lower-ranked opponent to get eliminated from contention before a disappointed home crowd.
Ahmed Al-Sarori spelled the biggest difference, finding the back of the net from close range seven minutes before stoppage time as Yemen, already out of the running, lived up to being a spoiler with its first win in six matches in Group H.
Al-Sarori's goal was the first for Yemen in this qualifiers.
The Filipino booters still have two matches remaining that are now left without bearing.

Muller to start at goalkeeper for Azkals vs Yemen

By:

Roland Muller will get the start at goalkeeper when the Philippine Azkals battle Yemen on Thursday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Azkals coach Thomas Dooley said on Wednesday that Muller will start in lieu of Neil Etheridge, who was hampered by a leg injury during the training camp.
“I don’t want to take any risk,” Dooley said on Wednesday at the prematch press conference at Manila Hotel. “Roland had an excellent training session yesterday. He did an excellent job. He looked sharp, very quick. The way that I saw him in the Challenge Cup, he was outstanding over there.”

Etheridge had his first practice with the team on Tuesday, but was limited in his time on the pitch.
Dooley said, “He’s not 100-percent, and it’s still unknown if it holds for the game or not. So for me, it’s a reason that he’s not going to play.”
This would be the first time in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers that Etheridge won’t be the last line of defense for the Azkals.
In the Philippines’ last three matches, Etheridge surrendered seven goals, five of which coming in Uzbekistan’s 5-1 rout here at home.
“This game is way too important to play a little bit left or right. The one who’s 100-percent fit who can help the team will start,” said Dooley, as the Azkals make one last push in the World Cup qualifying.

No Younghusband for Philippines in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

MANILA (9 Nov 2015) – Philippines will be without captain Philip Younghusband for their FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Yemen on 12 November due to suspension for accumulated yellow cards.
“If a starter is missing, it’s always a little bit of an issue,” said Philippines head coach Thomas Dooley. “But on the other hand we have 23 unique players and if somebody doesn’t play and he has to play now.”
“That’s his chance to show what he can contribute to the team.”
The Philippines currently lie in third place of Group H of the AFC World Cup Qualifiers, accumulating just seven points in five games played.

Dooley: Win against Yemen keeps World Cup hopes alive

By Paolo Del Rosario, CNN Philippines

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — With a little over a week before their crucial World Cup Qualifying fixture against Yemen, the Philippine Azkals have started their preparations for the match in earnest.
After drawing North Korea and losing out to Bahrain in the last round of games, Azkals Head Coach Thomas Dooley is no stranger to the significance of their meeting with Yemen.
“It’s a must win game because mentally, we have three months before the next game in Uzbekistan, and it depends on how North Korea and Uzbekistan plays in the next two games," said Dooley.
"We know what we have to do against Uzbekistan to stay alive. The last thing is that, we have to win the game to be still in the race.”

Suspended captain

The Philippines will be without the services of team captain Phil Younghusband for the game, who misses out due to suspension for accumulated yellow cards.
Despite the absence of the team’s leading goalscorer, Dooley expects the rest of the squad to step up.
“If a starter is missing, it's always a little bit of an issue," said the Azkals coach. "But on the other hand we have 23 unique players and if somebody doesn’t play and he has to play now."
"That’s his chance to show what he can contribute to the team.”
The Philippines currently lies in third place of Group H of the AFC World Cup Qualifiers, accumulating just seven points in five games played.
The Azkals will look to improve on its standing in when it faces off against Yemen at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on November 12.

Azkals sans Phil, Luke battle Yemen Nov. 12

By Cedelf P. Tupas

The Philippine Azkals will miss skipper Phil Younghusband and young defender Luke Woodland as they aim to get their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track next week.
Picking up just a single point from their last three matches, the Azkals hope to stay in the hunt for a place in the third round when they battle Yemen at Rizal Memorial Stadium on Nov. 12.
Younghusband, the Azkals skipper, will serve a suspension for picking up yellow cards against Uzbekistan and Bahrain while Woodland has been granted permission to stay with his new club, Chester FC, for the international break.

A free agent since June, when his deal with Bolton ended, Woodland signed with the English fifth-tier club last week.
Sorely missed in games against North Korea and Bahrain, striker Javier Patiño returns to the PH side after helping Henan Jianye to a fifth-place finish in the Chinese Super League.
The Azkals returned to training at McKinley Hill Stadium yesterday with 11 players showing up. The foreign-based Azkals like Neil Etheridge, Jerry Lucena, Rob Gier, Roland Muller, Iain Ramsay, Stephan Schrock and Patiño will start arriving in Manila this week.
As it stands, the Azkals have a mountain to climb to make the third round, which also means automatic entry to the AFC Asian Cup in 2019.
With only seven points from five games, the Azkals need maximum points in their last three games. That will include a trip to Tashkent to play Uzbekistan next year and a clash with North Korea at home.
“We’re left with the almost impossible task of winning all of our last three matches,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami. “We’re still hopeful because we have a chance.”

Azkals seek redemption at home

By Olmin Leyba

After enduring a challenging two-game assignment in North Korea and Bahrain, the Philippine Azkals relish the opportunity to see friendly faces again on the familiar grounds of Manila for their upcoming Fifa World Cup qualifiers match against Yemen.
“We always look forward to playing in Manila,” said veteran defender Rob Gier.
The Azkals will face the Yemenis on Nov. 12 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in a home outing they hope to hurdle to try to stay alive in Group H of the WCQ.
Phl XI is currently on third spot with seven points behind North Korea’s 13 and Uzbekistan’s nine after their tough twin outings on the road last month.
The Pinoy booters held North Korea to gutsy 0-0 draw in Pyongyang but failed to sustain the charge and blew a chance to take second spot as they yielded a 0-2 defeat to Bahrain in Manama.
“We got to deal with this result and face the near impossible task of trying to get nine points in our last three games to get ourselves a chance (to earn a berth to the third round of the qualifiers),” said team manager Dan Palami after the stinging defeat in Bahrain.
Aside from Yemen, whom the Azkals outclassed (2-0) the first time around in Doha, Qatar, the Pinoys will also be up for a second meeting with North Korea in Manila and Uzbekistan in Tashkent in March 2016 to end group hostilities.
Meanwhile, to prepare for the Yemenis, management has set a nine-day training camp beginning today.
The Azkals will spend the first seven days of buildup at McKinley Hill Stadium before moving to Rizal Memorial on Nov. 10.
