Azkals rue officiating in loss to Thais: 'First goal came from a corner that wasn't really a corner'

WHILE not taking anything away from Thailand, the Philippine men’s football team rued the “dubious” officiating in their 3-0 loss to the host team in the second leg of the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup semifinals at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok.
The Azkals felt there were questionable calls and non-calls that went in favor of the Thais all throughout the crucial match, none more evident than the linesman’s decision to award the Thais a corner that translated into the first goal barely six minutes into the match.
“It’s already very difficult to play against a very strong team and against those fans, but it’s more difficult when you play, I normally don’t like to say this, against the linesman,” Azkals coach Thomas Dooley said. “The first goal came from a corner that wasn’t really a corner.”

Chanathip Songkrasin capitalized with a strike from the middle off a header by Narubadin Weerawatdodom, who caught a pinpoint cross from Kroekrit Thawikan from the left side.
“The first goal put us under a hell of a lot of pressure,” skipper Rob Gier said. “But if you look at where that goal stemmed from, they won a corner, but there was never a corner.”
“I don’t like to make excuses and dig out referees and linesmen,” the veteran defender said. “But for me, that was a big decision he got wrong. It kept us on the back foot. From there, it was always going to be an uphill struggle.”
“But Thailand deserved the win,” Dooley said.
“There were some dubious calls from the referee, but you can’t really blame them,” Azkals manager Dan Palami said. “At the end of the day, we create our own chances — or lack of it — and that’s how it is.”
“Let’s go back to the drawing boards and ask yourself how you can get over this next barrier,” he added.
Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta echoed Palami’s sentiments.
“We expect that (officiating) in their home,” said Araneta, a former national team player. “It’s just a lesson that we just have to be focused on the game and not on the officiating.”

  1. Wow.. What pathetic losers.. This is the most pathetic excuse i've ever seen. It wasn't PK or anything, it was just a damn corner! Wrong calls by linesmen always happen in football, in favor of sometimes your team and sometimes your opponent, and you just have to live with it. Home call? Then what about the refs in Manila who missed or pretended to miss Amani's childish headbutt strategy ?

    1. Its not an excuse when it is very obvious that the officials were a bit bias in their decisions. A loss is a loss and there should be no excuse for that but it doesn't mean that we ignore that there were questionable calls made in that game. That none call to Amani is like what compared to those none calls in the 2nd leg. And fyi, the azkals or their coaching staff are not pathetic losers. They were brave and they show a glimpse of what they can achieve. Playing a team like thailand with a home crowd like theirs and coming up with only 3 goals down, Philippine football has no where to go but up now.

    2. Questionable calls are always made. ALWAYS. International matches, European league matches, or whatever, it's rare that refs make 100% perfect decisions throughout 90 mins. The point is whether the calls decisively affected the result or not. This game was not the case, obviously not. Thais totally dominated the entire game and the scoreline could've been much worse. Then you shouldn't whine about such a minor call as a questionable corner in the first goal sequence. And what's funnier is, the first goal was NOT directly from the corner. It was a long sequence between the corner and the goal, and yet they blame that corner decision for the first goal ? Pathetic excuse. This is why i said "pathetic losers", not for losing the game.

  3. diversionary tactics of a poor coach who have no coaching experience until the Azkals came to him. What a poor excuse.

  4. Even if the super class coaches will coach the present members of the azkals the same performance we will expect, unless our men can move like the quickness of Thailand and Vietnam and everybody can kick stronger than the two mentioned, we might have the edge to defeat them. I think they have already reach the peak of their ability. Seeing those previous Suzuki cup 2010 & 12 their level is just the same. So maybe we have to wait until our grassroots will be fully develop.

  5. Cguro, if same coach, same players with the same manager but if all three are being changed with only the youngsters remain then there would be some difference. IMHO, Chieffy Caligdong's speed is unmatched by Bahadoran but I cannot compare them anymore due to fact that Chieffy retired form International scene.

    2. Mas gusto mo defensive vs attacking football? More long balls than short passing? Although struggle pa tau sa short passing pag malalakas ang kalaban... gusto mo parin bumalik sa system ni weiss?

  6. We need more trained coaches to teach the grassroots. Most active PH-born players learned their football 'oido' style or from class 'e' coaches. The few local boys who were trained properly in elementary/high schools who could afford b & c coaches mostly left football for greener pastures. It is harder to un-learn bad habits developed when you're young. Guess we just have to look for Fil-foreigners who are better than the current crop

  7. Sa mga naglalaro ng football o mahilig sa football tuloy lang ang laro o pagsuporta sa football tuloy ang passion kahit sa Europe maraming kulelat dyan pero pursigido pa rin sa asean ang nananalo sa suzuki cup hanggang suzuki cup lang di rin kayang magadvance sa asian games walang shortcut sa football we are decades behind from european and south americans walang sisihan just keep on supporting mas maganda na meron tayong participation kesa wala

  8. as I say in couple of my comments before, pinoy don't have chance to beat thais, thais easy beat NZ,and NZ is more strong in the field than Pinoy, and game is over,.i know that Thais will take easy Pinoy in the game, just always remember don't think to much before you play,. Play the game/fare play/I did not hear about this coach everywhere he coach, maybe he is just usa man, hats why pinoy accept him, because everything what is usa made, they think its best, its not, you have your local coaches, better that this American coach, if this American coach is skilled, he will coach in America,

    5. Dooley was Assistant coach of the US national team next to Klinsmann. Has a UEFA license. Played as captain in the World Cup (although that will not necessarily translate to coaching skills). He has more credentials than most local coaches.

    6. UEFA is different from AFC license even if it is the most supreme of all license. The commentator of Foxsports always said that the style of play by TD is way too European or american and not basically fits the style of Asia. Dooley just an assistant coach by Klinsmann during USA vs. Mexico only while true managerial job is 1. FC Saarbrücken -the German Football Fourth League Tier which is a low level tournaments for people who are not professionals in football. If Dooley is still at the helm next year then always expect 'Long Balls' again from our players towards Phil because Shrock is not playing anytime soon with De Jong , Chieffy , Cagara and Neil. Many people just read the media but true reasons will be spilled when you talked to the players inside the National Team Pool because they know the truth.

  11. Personally, I think that Dooley did a good job with what he has on the field and on the bench. They were not at the same caliber with Thailand asides from a couple of players with experience playing abroad. They did what they could to stay close hoping for given opportunities. Had they decided to trade attacking game they would have got burn by Thailand's brazing counter-attacks.

Thailand has the best records going against teams from outside the region---they don't normally got hammered.

Surety, the Philippines need to have a grassroots development which will take time. But you can't abandon using players from abroad all together at least during development process.

I disagree with putting down Thomas Dooley as his football experiences is only Thailand's can only dream of. I am Thai with professional football coaching experience abroad. If you switch coaches Dooley would have easily coaches Thailand to beat the Philippines.

Overall SEA football still far far away from challenging the like of Iran, South Korea, Iraq and Japan. We also have seen how top Asian teams fair out in Brazil. There are tons of work to do for everyone, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia included.

Best of luck to the Philippines football..!

  12. bon nirnam14 December 2014 at 00:56 you are a Thai and you said this? We'll, if im a diehard Thai fan I would also comment like this so the philippine team will not win against our team if Dooley is still the coach of them. You are creating reverse psychology to us fans bon nirman and i'm one of those who can't be fooled. We all know TD loves long balls instead of short quick combination passes which most Asian teams does and it is not suited to us Filipinos its more of european and american style of play. If he is what he wants us to be then he should have no problems with the likes of Shrock and Etheridge meaning the coach should have a good command of respect inside the locker room and not to create controversy and disharmony towards the team. Just because he's american then many people immediately loves him.

  13. You are missing the point. A coach may deployed a specific style of his liking but usually based on collective players' abilities. This is why Thailand sucks under English coaches because players do not have technical abilities and the depth of English's game.

I am a Thai and an SEA/Asia Football fan not any team in particular. I just wanted to see SEA football develop proportionate to energy and supports landed to football by millions of sincere and trusted fans.

Of course, as a Thai I would like to see Thailand succeed but a die-hard fan I am not.

Don't walk around in fear, ผมไม่ได้มีเจตนาที่จะลวงล่อคุณ. You are outside Thailand, here.
