Azkals shorthanded vs Nepal

Cranking up its preparation for the AFF Suzuki Cup next month, a shorthanded Philippines faces Nepal on Friday at Al Ahli Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

It will mark the second time the two countries are playing against each other this year with the Azkals seeking a repeat of their 3-0 drubbing of the Nepalese side last April.

Kickoff is at 7:40 p.m. (12:40 a.m. Saturday in Manila) with the Azkals hoping to buck the absence of several key players who were not released by UFL club Ceres La Salle.

Midfielders Jerry Lucena, Paul Mulders and Martin Steuble are returning to the side but the Azkals will miss Ceres aces Patrick Reichelt, Jeffrey Christiaens, Manny Ott and Juani Guirado as well as Jason de Jong, who quit the national side last week.

Still, the Azkals have plenty of firepower up front with Mark Hartmann, who fired four goals in the 5-0 win over Papua New Guinea this month, partnering with Phil Younghusband.

Alvaro Silva, the touted Fil-Spanish defender, has also linked up with the team in Doha, but remains unlikely to suit up against the Nepalese as he has yet to secure his Filipino passport. Amani Aguinaldo and Rob Gier are expected to pair up at central defense, with Daisuke Sato and Simone Rota occupying the leftback and rightback positions, respectively.

Oldham signs Neil Etheridge !

Oldham Athletic have boosted their defensive options with the signing of goalkeeper Neil Etheridge on a short-term contract, subject to Football League clearance.

The former Chelsea and Fulham goalkeeper has been training with Latics and appeared in the behind-closed-doors fixture with Bury on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old enjoyed spells on loan with Charlton Athletic, Bristol Rovers and Crewe Alexandra and is a full Phillipines international. 

Etheridge signs until December 30 and goes straight into the squad to face Bristol City on Saturday.

Manager Lee Johnson commented on the signing: "It is a good signing for us. He has a decent reputation in football and he's a good goalkeeper that is lacking a bit of experience.

"He comes in to push Rachubka for the number one spot."

Etheridge will wear the number 38 shirt with Oldham Athletic.

Al Ahli set up Philippines-Nepal charity match in Doha

QATAR Stars League (QSL) club Al Ahli on Tuesday announced plans to raise money for building a permanent site for the Philippine School Doha through an international friendly match between Philippine and Nepal at Al Arabi Stadium in Doha on Friday.

The match will feature the national teams of both countries with famous musical artistes to entertain the large Filipino and Nepali communities.

Speaking at the press conference, Philippine ambassador HE Crescente Relacion said:"First of all I would like to thank the QSL and QFA for making this a reality. Also I want to thank the Ahli club for their commitment in making this possible to support the Philippine Doha School.

"This is a grand match because the two nations. The last time we met we won. We are inviting the Filipino and Nepali communities and expatriates to come and watch this match," the ambassador said.

"To spice up the match, Al Ahli Sports Club has invited famous music artistes from both the countries to entertain fans before and after the game," he added.

Khalid Mubarak al Kuwari, Chief Operations Officer of QFA, said:"We are proud to see two national teams with large expat presence coming to play in Qatar with Ahli club as the facilitator."

He added that QFA President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al Thani welcomes the development and is happy with the initiative as it blends sports and education.

"The match proceeds is going towards the building project of the Philippine School Doha," al Kuwari said.

Hassan al Kuwari, QSL Head of Events, said,"This is a new initiative from Ahli club as part of their social responsibility which is different from the last one (to raise money for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines). This is focuses on education and sport."

"Qatar Stars League will donate 5,000 tickets to be sold that will be donated to the Philippine School Doha," the QSL official added.

The principal of the school, Dr Alexander S Acosta expressed his gratitude to the football authorities and enjoined football enthusiasts to come enmasse to cheer their compatriots.

"This initiative has shown the interest of the authorities in Qatar to help us actualise our dream. The QFA and QSL have been very supportive in the past. And now they have shown it again.

According to the principal, the school was opened 22 years ago and will eternally be grateful for the support of Ahli club that facilitated the initiative. 

"We will not forget this contribution by QFA and QSL in helping us in our time of need," he concluded.

Ahli spokesperson Yacoub Nasser thanked the QFA and QSL for supporting the event.

He also expressed gratitude to the Filipino and Nepali communities for attending the matches of Al Ahi in the past three season.

Al Ahli have a long-standing relationship with the Filipino community, with fans regularly involved in community initiatives and attending matches. The last match between the two nations was in April at the same venue for Friday's match. The Philippines were 3-0 winners.

USLS keeps men’s football title

A goal from Ressi Ramos in the 7th minute was all that the University of St. La Salle-Ceres football team needed as they beat NCAA champion San Beda College, 1-0, to retain the men’s football championship in the 19th Philippine University Games at the Central Philippine University Football Field yesterday.

Keeping the gold medal they won last year and registering his 8th Unigames title, veteran football coach Freddie “Nene” Lazarito said he was happy for his players who bucked all the challenges and displayed their maturity during the tournament.

He expressed his gratitude to the St. La Salle administrators and the management of Ceres Transport, who showed their confidence to the team.

Ceres FC club director Ali Go says their club would not release Jeffrey Christiaens, Juani Guirado, Manny Ott and Patrick Reichelt for national team duty over what the team feels is an unhealthy schedule

MANILA, Philippines – Amid the upcoming preparations going into the Suzuki Cup on November, several national team booters playing for Ceres La Salle FC will have to miss the Qatar training camp due to their duties to their club.

As part of the build up of the Azkals ahead of their forthcoming tournament, the team management headed by Coach Thomas Dooley opted to hold a two-game training camp in Doha, Qatar in which they will face the Nepalese national team and Qatari club Al Ahli SC.

In line with this, the Azkals management has summoned 21 players, 5 coming from Ceres FC, to join the training camp.

But they'll be without Jeffrey Christiaens, Juani Guirado, Manny Ott and Patrick Reichelt. According to Ceres FC club director Ali Go says that their club would not be releasing its players for their national team duty due to the unhealthy schedule that it would pose for the players of their club.

“It's true that we did not release our players for the national team friendly in Qatar,” Go told Rappler in an interview. “The main reason is very obvious; the schedule is not good at all for the players.

“I think they have to think about the players’ health and recovery and also the club’s situation,” he added.

“If you’re trying to be professional we should start from the right schedule of games [because] recovery of players [is important].”

Ceres La Salle FC have qualified for the semis of the United Football League (UFL) FA League Cup after trouncing Stallion FC, 3-1, during the quarterfinals of the tournament. They are scheduled to face Pachanga Diliman FC for the semifinals on November 4th.

Meanwhile, coach Go stated that they already released Paul Mulders for the overseas training camp as he has yet to make his debut appearance for his new club.

Nevertheless, the club director emphasized that upon the end of the current UFL tournament, they will be prepared to release their players for their duties to the national team. – Rappler.com

Azkals' friendly vs Thailand removed from Fifa schedule but PFF says match will push through

THE Philippine men’s football team’s friendly against Thailand in Nakhon Ratchasima next month will push through as scheduled, according to the Philippine Football Federation. There was confusion when the match slated November 10 was removed from the Azkals’ schedule on the website of football's world governing body Fifa. But PFF general secretary Ed Gastanes said the match will be played and they have not received communication from their counterparts in Thailand of a possible cancellation. “The match in Thailand is a go as far as PFF is concerned,” Gastanes told Spin.ph on Wednesday, adding that Thailand is perhaps just completing the necessary documents for Fifa authorization before announcing the match intended for the preparations of both countries for the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup. “There is no advice to the contrary from Thailand, which, as host, takes care of securing Fifa authorization.” Gastanes also confirmed another friendly for the Filipino footballers against Cambodia on November 14 in Manila in what could be their last match before plunging into action in the Suzuki Cup kicking off Nov. 22. “It was worked out during the last few days.” The Thomas Dooley-mentored Azkals are in Doha for a friendly against Nepal on Friday.

Azkals updates Wednesday

Azkals arrived Doha on Tuesday , they will be playing friendly against Nepal on Friday.

Ceres Fc players did not go to Qatar , but it seems that Paul Mulders will be joining Azkals in Qatar. Mulders who has signed for Ceres Fc has not played any matches yet for them.

Jerry Lucena is leaving today for Qatar reporting his club's website.

 Martin Steuble's club is playing MLS Cup playoffs on Thursday , but he has been listed in the Azkals squad list for Nepal.

Alvaro Silva Linares , fil-Spanish player from Kuwaiti club Al-Qadsia will be joining the training camp. He has not yet got his Filipino passport and cant play in the Nepal friendly.

Kenshiro Daniels is injured and did not play for Kaya in the UFL quarterfinals , but is in Qatar training camp.

PFF has not announced a updated squad list for the training camp.

Azkals to play Cambodia in last tuneup before Suzuki Cup

The Philippine national men’s football team will be facing Cambodia in the Azkals’ final tuneup before heading to the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup in November.

The 129th-ranked Azkals and the 185th-ranked Cambodia will face off on November 14 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, the Philippine Football Federation announced on Tuesday.

Cambodia fell short of qualifying for the Suzuki Cup after finishing third in the qualifiers this month. Myanmar and Laos made it to the tournament proper after finishing No.1 and No.2, respectively.

Apart from the match against Cambodia, the Azkals have two more friendlies lined up in their schedule. The Filipinos will play Nepal during a training tour in Doha, Qatar on Friday and local club Al Ahli SC on Sunday before playing as visitors against Thailand on November 10 in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The Azkals are grouped with host Vietnam, Indonesia and Laos in the Suzuki Cup where the Filipinos aim to surpass their semifinal finishes in the past two editions.

De Jong quits Azkals ahead of Suzuki Cup

CITING “personal reasons,” midfielder Jason de Jong, one of the most
 improved players under national football team coach Thomas Dooley,
yesterday announced his retirement from the Azkals.

The 24-year-old De Jong, the reigning Golden Ball winner in the United 
Football League,
 said he has already informed Dooley of his decision not to play for the
 national team’s next major tournament, the AFF Suzuki Cup.

The move comes as a shock as De Jong has been an integral part of the
 team being developed by Dooley. It also leaves a big hole in the Azkals
 midfield as they prepare for the Suzuki Cup.

“My heart is not in it anymore and I want to spend more time with my family,”
said the Filipino-Dutch standout, who has played 49 times for the Azkals
 since 2008.

De Jong told the Inquirer that, unlike the “resignation” of Stephan Schrock and
Dennis Cagara early this year, his move to quit the team wasn’t because of a
 falling out with Dooley.

“I thank boss Dan (Palami) and coach Dooley for the opportunity they gave me,”
 said De Jong. “It was certainly an honor playing for the national team.”

De Jong has been part of almost every PH side that achieved milestones the
 past four years. He played in the AFF Suzuki Cup side in 2010 and 2012 as
well as the AFC Challenge Cup squad that reached the final against
 Palestine early this year.

Meanwhile, the Azkals will face Thailand on Nov. 10 as part of their buildup
 for the Suzuki Cup. The Azkals will no longer play Malaysia on Nov. 8 and
 instead will fly to Nakhon Ratchasima for the duel with the Thais,
 the losing finalists toSingapore in the 2012 Suzuki Cup.

Phil Younghusband scores brace as Loyola escapes Stallion

MANILA, Philippines - Loyola Meralco Sparks FC outran Stallion FC in the dying minutes of their goal-clad match, 6-4, to end their United Football League (UFL) FA League Cup group stage campaign on a high note at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium (RMFS) on Thursday, October 23.

Early in the game, the aggressive offense of the Sparks made the blitz of their opponents to rely mainly on counter attacks.

The counter insurgences that Stallion capitalized during the opening minutes of the match proved to be useful as Jordan Mintah surprised the defense of Loyola and notched a goal from just inside the box.

Both clubs remained silent on the pitch for the remaining minutes of the first half until veteran booter Freddy Gonzalez struck the ball to equalize the score at 1-1 before halftime.

Nguene Landry wrote the opening sentence for the second half by beating three defenders to get a shot at goal and take the lead for Stallion, 1-2.

On the other end, Loyola swiftly responded with a duo of goals to post a 3-2 courtesy of Charlie Beaton in the 63rd minute and Max Wright in the 68th.

A handball inside the box resulted into a penalty kick given to the Stallion side. Mario Clariño took and converted the penalty to level the score at 3-3.

Loyola star striker Phil Younghusband, who came in during the 60th minute, broke the scoring standstill after his long distance shot found the back of the net to once again inch his team ahead of their foes, 4-3.

There was no shortage of goals in the match as another goal was sank by Clariño in the 78th minute to again bring the game into a deadlock, 4-4.

Fresh legs became instrumental in the Sparks’ late game rally as substitute Graham Caygill slotted a sneaky shot to give his team a 5-4 advantage in the 89th minute.

Stallion FC exhausted the last few drops of fuel in their gas tanks to hopefully equalize the score before regulation ended but their efforts went unrewarded as P. Younghusband struck the final whip to give Loyola a 6-4 win.

Meanwhile, Kaya FC slipped past Global FC, 2-1 to take the number one spot in Group B while Ceres La Salle FC dominated Philippine Army FC, 3-0, to end the group stage without a loss.

The UFL FA League Cup quarterfinals will commence on Sunday, October 26 with games between Ceres La Salle FC and Stallion FC followed by the game of Global FC and Laos FC.

Lastly, the quarterfinal meeting of Pachanga Diliman FC versus Manila All-Japan and the Kaya FC versus Loyola FC match-up will be held on Monday, October 27. All games will still be held at the RMFS. - Rappler.com

Azkals move up to 129th in Fifa rankings despite hardly seeing action this month

THE Philippine men’s football team moved up in latest world rankings despite hardly seeing action this month. With only a 5-0 friendly win over Papa New Guinea last week to show, the Azkals still rose five place up to 129th in the October rankings released on Thursday. Their latest ranking is two shy of their best ever notched earlier this year. The Filipino booters, though, will still have one match this month, a friendly against Nepal in Doha on October 31. The national team is also set to face Thailand on November 10, before plunging into action in the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup later next month. The Azkals remained the top team in Southeast Asia, followed by Vietnam (136), Myanmar (137), Laos (154), Malaysia (156), and Indonesia (157). Singapore (161), Thailand (165), Timor-Leste (182), Cambodia (185), and Brunei (198) complete the Asean list.

Thursday : AFF Beach Soccer in Malaysia - Philippines 2-5 Laos

KUANTAN (22 Oct 2014) – Thailand and Indonesia will start as favourites in the inaugural AFF-Felda Beach Soccer Championship which kicks off tomorrow here at the Teluk Chempedak beach in Kuantan.

The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) are organising the event for the first time this year in the hope that it will help to develop the sport further after it came into FIFA’s recognition in 2005.
“We feel honoured to be part of this championship of course,” said Thai team manager Tiranan Kanchanhom. “Whether we are the favourites or otherwise, we just want to do our best in this meet.”

Added Indonesian head coach Ida Mahayasa: “we have prepared well for this meet. And we really want to play well but I hope that we have good referees.”
Other than Thailand and Indonesia, the only other team who had previously played at the Asian level is the Philippines.

“So far the reception has been fantastic,” said Philippines team manager Rea Celine Villa. “I hope that we can put up a good show in this meet.”

In the last game of the day, Laos edged the Philippines 5-2.

“Not bad for a country with no beach,” exclaimed Laos coach Sysaveuy Saysanasy. “The lads played hard and this win gave us confidence for the next match.”

The scorers for Laos were Tona Bounmalay and Phithack Kongmatilath (two goals each) and another from Tu Mouakong Thao as the Philippines came back off Ali Mahmoud Ramos and Simpron Saludres.
