Azkals in training for Suzuki Cup

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals are hard at work preparing for the upcoming Suzuki Cup in November and are training twice a day this week under the guidance of Coach Thomas Dooley.
The national team still has over a month to prepare for the Suzuki Cup, where the Azkals are aiming for a breakthrough championship after placing second in the Challenge Cup and the Peace Cup earlier this year.
"Reviewing the whole season, the whole year, I have to say we improved," said Dooley. "In my opinion, we improved a lot in playing."

"Even the game against Myanmar (in the Peace Cup final), offensively we played well, we just didn't score enough goals. We had too many chances in the game, but didn't score goals," he added.
"And the game against Palestine (in the Challenge Cup final) was the worst game we played the whole year," Dooley also said, attributing the loss to exhaustion.
Dooley said they will work hard this week and training will intensify once the Azkals are done with their club duties in the United Football League.

"After the (UFL) final, I think we have them. We want to give them a couple of days off to get some fresh legs," he said.
Dooley said they are planning several tune-up games – including one in Qatar – as well as a team-building session in Subic ahead of the Suzuki Cup.

"For the Suzuki Cup, we have a little more time to prepare the team. It's not an easy tournament, and being ranked No. 1 doesn't mean anything," the coach said. "You cannot win the game in talking, you have to win the game on the field."
"We have to work on things that we didn't do very well, and just continue to do things better that we do well, and then we should be okay," he added. --
