  2. 1 hour pre-match show... too long! It's just filled with commercials and what they talk about becomes somewhat repetitive. I also hope Manotoc isn't there anymore. The guy is a reporter not a pundit!

  3. cmon jonny. you gotta give the team more credit. we will walk all over sri lanka. they can even get their cousins in india to help them it doesnt matter.

we will win 6-0 over sri lanka.

    ReplyDelete
  4. lol. 6-0? That's not just giving them credit, that's overrating them.

  5. @clock wtf?! i sure hope the team dont have the same mental attitude like you. underestimating an opponent could be a fast way to a loss. we arent that good that we think we will walkover any team in international competitions. mongolia was surely not a walkover eventhough it looked like it on the paper. we were outplayed in myanmar but we made with some luck. we were even outplayed and got lucky for the suzuki cup qualifier. in thailand we got beaten badly by 2nd div teams, in japan we got beaten by students. in manila they lost to a UFL selection team. so are we really that good that we should think that sri lanka on their own hometurf is a sunday walk with your lola? Answer is no. we dont even know who will play in sri lanka. lucena is doubtful, cagara? well, i dont think he will play for us the next few months. schrock? depends what his team wants. he ditched the azkal in the last 2 games in germany coz his team is preparing for next season. like jonny i predict a draw.

  6. ^^Nice to know that there's still some sensible people around.

  7. Schrock is playing. He was on the plane to sri lanka according to his own facebook account. I predict a close win in sri lanka and if that happens, an even bigger win in manila as the sri lankans try to make up the difference. The question is who is going to replace cagara and rochlitz on the original 23 man roster that was submitted. is lucena playing? if not, that drops the list to 20. maybe we are going with a less than full roster or maybe we are adding the players in germany who practiced with them like drinkuth, hinrichsen and potschke. The latter would be a welcome addition at centerback but i am not sure if his papers are in order yet.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Lucena isnt playing and ray might not make it. And no one cares about cagara. He is full of it. Im sure he wont show up against kuwait if the team makes it to 2nd round.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Without Cagara, Lucena, Jonsson, and Rochlitz, that leaves us with a 19 man roster? Is the team planning on replacing them at all or are we prepared to go with a less than complete roster? Our defensive line and defensive midfield position is kind of thin and doesn't give us too many attractive options. Hopefully they recruit Potschke in the future to give us depth at centerback.

As I have mentioned before, the games in Sri Lanka and Kuwait are not part of the FIFA Calendar. Therefore, the clubs are not obligated to release them. This is the AFC's decision to schedule this at this time. The AFC has a habit of doing this for the first 2 rounds of WC qualifying and other less important tournaments in the past. However, with WC qualifying events, in general if the clubs don't have an important game scheduled, they are usually much more understanding of their player's desire to play these games.

Jonsson was also late in arriving in the game in Mongolia, so it is possible he might arrive late as well. Among the European based players, he has the best attendance but maybe his club has decided to be less accomodating this season. We will see.

  10. As for Cagara, let us not be too hard on the guy. He has a history of serious injuries in the past which have scared off a lot of teams. He was practically unemployed for more than half a year since his major injury last year and has been unable to find a club that was willing to take a risk on him except for a short stint with FC Randers, where he didn'nt end up playing and subsequently got relegated. Without medical insurance coverage and a guaranteed salary, being injury prone, playing for the national team was too much of a risk so finding a club was more of a priority for him at this time. This is highlighted even more by the fact that one of the players in the camp in Germany(Reichelt) tore a ligament in his knee in camp, putting him out of commission for awhile and possibly putting his career in jeopardy.

    ReplyDelete
  11. A player still has a medical insurance even if he is not attached to a club. Its a license that players need to pay, if they dont, they cant play. They need a valid license. But i see your point. Its easier to have a club backing you up if youre injured. Honestly, i feel that Cagara should concentrate on his own personal career first, and get it on the right track rather than saying this and that and making promises. Thats something the management shouldve considered also. I doubt he is in that good of shape. Did he train in Germany? That wouldve been a good opportunity for him to show teams that he still got it or not. Im sure he would be a great player for the azkals when he is fit and have confidence, but as of now maybe his own career should come first than the azkals. As for Ray. His team has a game today, and he can still make it but thats up to his club. I always thought that the WCQ was on the FIFA calendar, but boy was i wrong.

Squad looks slim now if Ray cant make it and Lucena isnt playing and also Rochlitz. What happened to Rochlitz? Can they still bring in reserves that arent listed on the official list? I still feel that the management made a mistake when leaving out Chris Greatwich. He couldve made it to Sri Lanka even if he couldnt go to Germany, and they shouldve left Cagara out.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hey to all my fellow Azkal fans. I have a new chant that I think we should all sing.

It's called: "Cagara Means Shit in Portuguese!"

Every time Cagara touches the ball, we all scream: "CAGARA MEANS SHIT IN PORTUGUESE....CAGARA MEANS SHIT IN PIORTUGUESE!"

And THAT is how we will beat Indonesia my friends. Then we should put Samboy Lim at Guard.

And to ClockWork: Stop being a poser. Stick with "Tim Cahill" or the "Geelong Cats" this is for real fans of the RP team.

  14. WCQ's are on the on FIFA calendar but the games against Sri Lanka and (hopefully) Kuwait are only preliminary qualifiers.

There are 43 countries in the Asian group.

    Round 1:The 16 lowest ranked play 1 K.O.round.
    [29 Jun - 3 Jul]

Round 2:The 8 winners then join the next 22 highest ranked for another home-and-away K.O.
    [23 Jul - 28 Jul]

Round 3:The 15 winners out of the 30 in Rd 2
plus the 5 top countries which bypass Rd 1 & 2 are now divided into 5 groups of 4 teams. This is a round-robin tournament (each team in a group plays each other home and away).
    [2 Sep - 29 Feb 12]

    Round 4:The 5 winners and 5 runners up of Rd 3 are now divided into another 2 round-robin groups. [3 Jun - 18 Jun 12] (sic - but ?)

The 2 group winners and 2 runners up finally qualify for Brazil 2014.

The 2 third-placed teams play home and away KO
for the chance of an intercontinental play-off against another lower-placed team. Winning this also means qualifying for the finals.

Bottom line: 43 countries; only 4.5 can reach Brazil.(0.5 because the third-placed qualifier still only has half a chance.)

GOOD LUCK Azkals - it's a long and winding road ahead.

  15. Whose bringing crackers and flares to Rizal? where's our designated section? hit me up. by the end of the night, Rizal should look like it's catching on fire. it's gonna be 3-0 Sri Lanka. Why? because we had to forfeit.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The 1st and 2nd round of WCQ are listed on the FIFA Calendar but not scheduled by the AFC on FIFA mandated dates so clubs are under no obligation to release the players for this events.

On Cagara's facebook, they are mentioning that Dennis might be available for the 2nd round if we get past Sri Lanka.

  19. after the bacolod game vs mongolia, had opportunity to fly back to cebu with one of the euro-based players and he said that probable serious injuries is the one single thing that's holding back the foreign-based players from giving their all especially since they know the meager resources the pff has in case a career-threatening injury happens.

  21. Sri Lankans will not go thru this without a fight. they have a track record - 1995 winners of South Asian Cup. they hammered Bhutan 6-0 in 2009 and Pakistan, 7-1, in 2008. so there is something in this team. however, our Azkals can do better. defense was tested in germany. though ray is out, sabio, ali, potschke & anton can fill the gap. btw, where's rob gier? it's in the MF that we'll get into trouble though. JYB need to work on his MF role otherwise, chieffy can do the job.

  22. rom Cedelf Tupas' twitter:
"Fil-Icelandic leftback Ray Jonsson is expected to arrive in Colombo tomorrow and play on Wednesday"

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sounds good. Too bad he will for sure miss the 2nd leg of the game coz his team has a game July 3. But its more important that he will play in Sri Lanka.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Two possible lineups in the first leg in Sri Lanka:

    4-2-3-1(with 2 defensive mids)

    ---------Etheridge-----

    Schrock---Gier---Borromeo---Jonsson

    ----Mulders------------Ott

    --JYH-------Guirado--------Chieffy

    --------------PYH------------

    or a 4-4-2 diamond

    4-2-3-1

    ---------Etheridge-----

    del Rosario---Gier---Borromeo---Jonsson

    -----------Schrock-------

    --JYH---------------Chieffy

    ------------Mulders------------

    ----PYH----------------Guirado

    ReplyDelete
  25. Why include del Rosario in your 2nd formation, but leave him out the 4-2-3-1...

    ReplyDelete
  26. LOL Diamond formation?!? Weiss doesn't use the diamond formation. He's changed the system to 4-2-3-1 since the Challenge Cup qualifiers in Myanmar. You can bet he'll stick with that.

And it would be absolutely ridiculous to make Schrock play as pure holding mid therefore that diamond formation would be silly.

Based on what Weiss has been doing in Germany, Schrock will play in midfield as one of the two deeper CM's and one of Guirado and Mulders will miss out in the starting lineup.

Therefore it will most likely be:

    - - - - - - - Etheridge - - - - - - -
Del Rosario - Gier - Borromeo - Jonsson
    - - - Schrock - - - Ott - - -
    J.Younghusband - Guirdo or Mulders - Caligdong
    - - - - - - P. Younghusband - - - - - -

    ReplyDelete
  27. From what I heard, Etheridge scores some nice goals.

    --------del Rosario---------

    Ott - Gier - Boro - Jonsson

    ---Shrock ---- Mulders---

    J.Y. --- P.Y. --- Chieffy

    Etheridge

    Etheridge is CLINICAL, BOYS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Those are my preferred lineups. If you would consider the lineups used in Germany that Coach Weiss used then yes using Schrock and Ott as defensive mids would be most likely the preferred option. If Potscke was available, I would also prefer him to Gier as one of the centerbacks. As shown in the Suzuki Cup, Del Rosario proved to be vulnerable to quick international type players, so depending upon the type of players we will be facing, I would prefer to have Schrock shut down the right side as well as initiate quick attacks from the back.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well actually i take that back. Etheridge didn't even touch the ball when he scored.

so it should be like this:

    ==========FIELD==============

    --------Sideline-------------
    *Line Judge*

    =Coach Weiss=

    |__Etheridge____Sabio____Cagara________|
    *BENCH*

  31. I didn't say that I preferred the lineups that Weiss was using in Germany. I was just using it a basis on what he might do against Sri Lanka!! If it were up to me then yes, I would use Schrock as a RB and I would also try and put Guirado AND Mulders in the starting lineup.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Besides I prefer having our most experienced European players Guirado, Mulders, Jonsson and Schrock in the lineup at the same time,

    ReplyDelete
  33. Acc. to this article, http://roymondous.wordpress.com/2011/06/28/countdown-in-sri-lanka-expectations-and-anticipations/

Ray Jonsson has been confirmed to miss the first leg tomorrow and possibly even the second leg with his home club Grindavik having another game on July 2.

Looks like we need to look for another left back.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Roel Gener it is then.... lol!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. no matter what, i think we'r gonna pull off at least a win and a draw against sri lanka so i dont worry much about jonsson. but if cagara and jonsson both miss the next round, then itz gon be a serious problem.

    ReplyDelete
  36. IF we really do make it to the next round, with or with Jonsson and/or Cagara, we're gonna lose anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  37. we believe

    go azkals

    ReplyDelete
  38. leave cagara out. jonsson is a bigger loss for the Azkals. without him, the back four aint the same unless sabio ups his stuff!

@clockworks: ur hallucinating man! sri lanka is not a pushover like u think. but ill give azkals the game, 3-1. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. First match a draw, maybe 2-2, 2nd match 2-0 for Azkals. So in case we advance into the next round and facing Kuwait - we will lose either with Cagara/Jonsson etc. or without them. Just depends then how high the defeat would be then....

    ReplyDelete
  40. the referee for tomorrow's match is from Bangladesh......not a lucky hand from AFC. I don't want to predict the worst but we won vs. Bangladesh in the Challenge cup qualifier and this country is closer to Sri Lanka related....hope there won't be some strange decisions......

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jonsson out, Mulders in for #Azkals at leftback, reports @cedelfpt from Sri Lanka. Story up soon on @INQUIRERSports

Weiss on moving Mulders from his natural midfield to leftback in Jonsson's place: Risky, but he's good

look out for the partnership of Manny Ott and Stephan Schrock at midfield tom vs Sri Lanka. Mr Palami is raving about it. Jonsson will also miss 2nd leg in Manila.

All these tweets by cedelf confirms it. Mulders at left back and Ott and Schrock at midfield. I agree that having all our most experienced European based players on the field at the same time even playing out of positions is a good idea especially against Sri Lanka. It is kind of interesting that in the position(left back) where we have potentially the most options(Jonsson, Cagara, Juan Luis Guirado who are all not available) we are now fielding a natural attacking midfielder. Risky indeed but I think manageable against Sri Lanka.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Most likely lineup:

    - - - - - - - Etheridge - - - - - - -
Del Rosario - Gier - Borromeo - Mulders
    - - - Schrock - - - Ott - - -
    J.Younghusband - Guirdo -- - Caligdong
    - - - - - - P. Younghusband - - - - - -

    ReplyDelete
  43. This is a very offensive lineup. With Mulders moving forward a lot of the time, we will potentially see a back three most of the time supported by the 2 defensive midfielders so the offside trap won't be as much of a factor hopefully.

Another thing, since Mulders trained at Ajax, he probably has experience playing some defence, since the Ajax system emphasizes total football, with players being able to play all over the field.

    ReplyDelete
  44. to Etheridge haters: you are all fair-weathered fans.

and "line judge" ?! You don't even know what you're talking about. It's very easy to judge people when you don't know what you're talking about, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  45. it is incredible that a WCQ match is not a FIFA match.that must be changed urgently. If not,all national teams that have european based player(and might also from others places too) loose theire bests players.Specially looking that teams are not comprensible neither with players, that prefer to play a WCQ match with their national team than a first date match with teir team, and with the PFF at this case.

    ReplyDelete
  46. to the anonymous above...HUH?

Stop toking...it's bad for your health.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Offensive move by putting Mulders in defense. Id rather put Schrock there coz he is a defensive player on the right side, and playing on the left side isnt much different at all, and we could use Mulders on the midfield. And Schrock is an attacking type of defender also, and all in all id rather have him back there. But we will see how it turns out.

  50. Finally, we'll get to see a starting lineup WITHOUT Ian Araneta!! Hooray! lol!!

Now, we just need to get Iain Ramsay to commit to the Philippines at international level so we can get Caligdong out of the starting lineup. If not Ramsay then another winger with quality that could displace Caligdong.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wanting the team to improve and get better is acceptable and normal.

But its unfair and classless to cheer for a locals who have dedicated so much and received so little when they get replaced.

I am all for finding new talent and infusing them into the team to encourage more locals to stick with the sport and improve. But give credit to those that have given to the team and show them the proper respect.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I can't wait for this match. Very curious to see all the work that was put in by the team in Germany and see how all the new players gel with one another.

Mulders an attacking mid at LB is a little concerning. There is no doubting his quality but he is a natural right footed player and more comfortable with an extra line of players behind him. Can't help but imagine there will be some nervous energy for him as it is also his debut. I fully expect him to settle down early and maybe an early overlap into the offensive third will get him into the game.

  56. "But its unfair and classless to cheer for a locals who have dedicated so much and received so little when they get replaced."

Unfair? Classless?? Who the hell are you to be able to come to that conclusion? It's part and parcel of being a fan/supporter. And is it my fault or any other fan's fault if a certain player, in this case Araneta, "gets so little when they get replaced"?? No it isn't. So that's irrelevant. Araneta has been extremely lucky that he's been a starter as long as he has. It's finally time he gets dropped in favor of more quality. So now, I suggest you piss off.

    ReplyDelete
  57. If I was Weiss, I'll rather put Schrock at RB bcoz thats his natural position, and Mulders as Attacking midfielder which is his natural position also.

    MY starting eleven.

    - - - - - - - Etheridge - - - - - - -
Del Rosario - Gier - Borromeo - Schrock
    - - - Mulders - - - Ott - - -
    J.Younghusband - Guirdo -- - Caligdong
    - - - - - - P. Younghusband - - - - - -

  59. Wasnt referring to him getting little by being replaced. I was referring to the years in which he stuck it out playing for the team when no one cared. Never said Ian was the best attacking option just saying to disrespect a guy that has served the team for a long time isn't cool. It's not his fault he was the best option for a long time.

Also don't forget chieffy was responsible for a large portion of getting the Philippines it's first win after years of never coming close. So yes he too will be replaced at some point but rather then cheer for him being dropped why not thank him and support the new guy.

Real classy telling me to piss off too. Heck no I've been around this team and core group since I was 15, that's almost half my life and I ain't ever gonna stop supporting them.

    ReplyDelete
  60. "I was referring to the years in which he stuck it out playing for the team when no one cared."

Once again, this is irrelevant!! That has nothing to do with Ian being part of the team, starting lineup, being shyte or not or whatever!!

Like I've said, it's part and parcel of being a fan/supporter! We're gonna have things, in this case player(s), that we like and we don't like. And all I did was post my delight in the fact that he's getting replaced with someone with more quality! That is in no way shape or form being disrespectful, let alone being "classless".

Ya that's right, I'm telling you to piss off. Because you're being too much of a goody-goody and being offended for someone else when no offense was being made to begin with! Absolutely ridiculous!

You've been following the national team since you were 15? Half your life? Woopty doo!! I've been following the national team since I was 10 and that's more than half my life!! So ya, piss off with your goody-goody type BS attitude trying to label people classless!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. They need to start Araneta. Caligdong is the workhorse. You can't replace the workhorse. The rest of them are just luxuries.

  65. All i can say is LOL to those who said that azkals would win easy with 6-0 or a big win. Doesnt hurt to be realistic ey? Im sure and hope azkals will win this at homefield.

Anyone know why Burke was subbed in and then out? Was the result fair for both teams?

    ReplyDelete
  66. That result was definitely fair. Only those who are biased and perhaps numpties would say otherwise! It was a physical and scrappy game from start to finish and didn't really deserve a winning team. Again, a draw was a the right and fair result. Personally, I would say 0-0 would've been the right result.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Good result. I was expecting a 2-1 win but this final result was not surprising either.

Schrock looked like a beast in the middle. Guirado and J. younghusband worked their asses off. Chieffy's crosses/long balls looked almost on point or just a little off or just missed by the receiver. Back 4 still scares me too often. It looks like the team is just one play or two from clicking all together.
