De La Salle defeated University of Santo Tomas (UST), 1-0, to claim the 72nd UAAP women’s football title and dethrone the Tigresses on Sunday at the Ateneo field.
Adrianne Yniguez knocked in the game’s only score in the 56th minute as the Lady Archers came back to win the title after losing their twice-to-beat advantage in the finals last Thursday.
The Tigresses beat the Lady Archers, 2-0, with Marianne Narciso scoring all the goals in the match, to force Sunday's rubber match.
But in the KO showdown, Narciso found no answer to De La Salle’s defense led by Andrea Frumenti who kept UST’s top striker at bay.
It was a challenging finals series for the Lady Archers, who lost their top goalkeeper Hannah Ibarra to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury before their finals tiff.
“I didn’t expect that we will contend for the title because of the injuries but credit the girls for stepping up," said multi-titled De La Salle coach Hans Smit.
Samantha Nierras of De La Salle won the Most Valuable Player and Best Midfielder awards while Yniguez soared to the Rookie of the Year honors.
Narciso was adjudged the Best Scorer while UST teammate Arlene Gavile won the Best Goalkeeper plum.
The title was the Lady Archers’ eighth but only their first since 2006, and they did it against the Tigresses, a team that proved to be pesky for the Lady Archers in championship games.
Last season, De La Salle had a twice-to-beat edge in the finals only to be overcome by UST. The Tigresses also took the women’s football crown at the expense of De La Salle in the University Games in Iloilo last year. - GMANews.TV
