The Philippine Men’s Under-22 team put on an inspired start in their SEA Games campaign after a 2-0 win over Cambodia last Tuesday 15 August 2017 at the MP Selayang Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
It was the Philippines’ first win in the SEA Games since 2011 and their first over Cambodia since 2005.
Raymart Cubon opened the scoring in the 50th minute with an unmarked header from a Jarvey Gayoso corner.
Kouichi Belgira doubled the lead late in the match with a well taken free kick to the bottom corner to give Marlon Maro’s side the full three points.
“We prepared for this game,” said Maro. “I’m just happy we were able to start our journey in the tournament on a high.”
Team captain Julian Clarino hailed the performance of the whole team in the win.
“We’re more than grateful,” said Clarino. “(The win is) not just for the team, it’s for the country and that speaks alot.”
The Philippine U22s will next face Indonesia at the Shah Alam Stadium on Thursday 17 August 2017. Kick off is at 8:45 PM.
