MAKATI--Kaya Makati banked on the heroics of goalkeeper Ref Cuaresma to salvage a 2-2 draw against JPV Marikina in one of three scheduled PFL matches on Wednesday night at the University of Makati Stadium.
The veteran netminder delivered at the death with a huge save that kept Marikina from stealing the three points on the road.
Marikina entered the scoreboard first as Taku Uesato drilled a goal just two minutes into play.
Robert Mendy, however, canceled the first blood as he got to the ball first following a footrace and found himself with only Nelson Gasic to beat before striking the ball into the net in the 16th minute.
Uesato, however, sealed his brace with a 39th minute goal that put Marikina back up, 2-1, by halftime.
Early into the second half, however, Makati got a golden opportunity as a Marikina player was slapped with a handball infraction inside the penalty area, giving Makati a penalty kick.
Adam Reed, the designated kicker, did not disappoint as he blasted the ball to the upper right corner of the goal for the 2-all count.
Then Cuaresma took over, saving five huge Marikina shots including three from short distance to save the draw.
But none was more important than his huge save in the last play of the match as Marikina was inches away from the goalmouth anew.
The draw was enough to catapult Makati past Cebu for second place on goal difference. Both clubs will meet on Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Complex.
Marikina, on the other hand, remained in fifth place.
