Male’, MALDIVES – AFC Cup debutants Kaya FC of the Philippines secured a place in the second round of the AFC Cup as the runners-up of Group F following a goalless draw with New Radiant.
Hong Kong’s Kitchee comfortably seeing off Singapore’s Balestier Khalsa 4-0 in Tuesday’s other Group F tie to wrap up top spot, Kaya claimed second place and booked a date with defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim in the Round of 16.
New Radiant came closest to breaking the deadlock in the half hour mark when Izzath Abdul Baree’s header inside the six yard box was off target after a perfect cross from Rilwan Waheed.
Five minutes before the break Rilwan Waheed saw an effort just outside the box fly wide of the right post.
In the 50th minute, Shirmar’s left-foot shot went over the cross bar on the edge of the area.
Seven minutes later Sadin made an effort on target but was blocked and keeper saved the cross when Nuhaad put it into the box from the rebounded ball.
Kaya FC coach Joel Villarino said after the match that their objective was to win the game.
“Our objective was to win the game, but based on the result of the other game we tried to control the game and finish with a draw; it was a good result.” Villarino said.
“Our problem is finishing and we need to correct it. The second round is a tough one and it will be stronger than the group stage, so we have to prepare for this.”
On the other hand his counterpart Stoykov said he was happy with the result.
“One point is a good result and I am satisfied even though we are out at the group stage,” said New Radiant coach Iordan Stoykov.
“I want to congratulate Kaya for their qualification for the first time in their history. Every nation is progressing and we are all improving.”
