FEU footballers eye another big win as Ateneo booters try to bounce back from goalless draw

FAR Eastern University looks to continue its fine run, while Ateneo tries to do better after being held to a scoreless draw as the Tamaraws and Blue Booters collide on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 77 men's football tournament at the FEU Diliman pitch. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. National University and La Salle collide in the curtain raiser at 1 p.m., with the winner staying in the Top Four.  Both matches will be aired live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23. The UP Fighting Maroons have 13 points, two clear of Ateneo. FEU is level with the NU Bulldogs in third spot with 10 points, although the Tamaraws are ahead on goal difference. In the season’s most lopsided match, FEU whipped Adamson University, 9-1, on Sunday, with Eric Giganto, back from a one-match ban, drilling in four goals to hike his league-best total to eight. On the same day, the Eagles battled to a goalless draw with fierce rival Green Booters as they failed to join UP for the lead. Aside from Giganto, the back-to-back seeking Tamaraws have been solid this season behind reigning MVP Paolo Bugas, Nicolas Ferrer, Arnel Amita and Jess Melliza. Carlo Liay's return from injury last season has boosted Ateneo, which won the championship in 2013, and coach JP Merida is also drawing big games from Emilio Acosta, Julian Roxas, Jin Daniel Montemayor and Jeremiah Rocha. With Sunday’s 3-1 win over University of Santo Tomas, NU moved a point ahead of La Salle, which is running fifth with nine points. Paolo Salenga, who netted four goals this season, will be the main man for the Bulldogs, while the Green Booters will bank on ace striker Gelo Diamante.
