Hans Michael Weiss, the German coach who steered the Philippine national men’s football team for the past three years, will no longer call the shots for the Azkals.
Weiss himself confirmed the development to InterAksyon.com.
“Yes it is true,” Weiss wrote in a text message in response to a query by InterAksyon.com.
The coaching change came barely four months before the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup, where the Azkals are aiming to win to qualify for the prestigious 2015 Asian Cup.
Weiss he signed a contract extension last March after helping the Azkals qualify for the Challenge Cup. With his tenure being renewed for another year, he was expected to steer the Filipinos in the tournament in Maldives this year.
But team management, led by Azkals manager Dan Palami, made an evaluation of Weiss’ performance last December and decided to find a new coach for the tournament. Reached for comment, Palami didn’t respond to multiple queries by InterAksyon.com.
Weiss took over the Azkals in 2011 shortly after the squad’s memorable Cinderella run in the previous year’s ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup. Under his watch, the team has scaled unprecedented heights, winning its first international title in 99 years with the Philippine Football Peace Cup in 2012 and reaching once again the semifinals of the Suzuki Cup in the same year.
Weiss also helped the squad enjoy its highest world ranking at 127th last year.
