Kuala Lumpur: Vietnam defeated the Philippines 3-0 to finish their Group J qualifying campaign of the AFC U-16 Championship 2014 behind winners Japan on Sunday. 

Japan, who defeated Indonesia by identical scoreline earlier on Sunday, topped Group J with maximum nine points from three matches. Vietnam only suffered a loss against the table toppers with 2-1 defeat but they redeemed themselves by beating the Philippines and Indonesia. 

Le Tien Anh put the Vietnamese in front in the 28th minute while Nyugen Van Huy and Hoang The Tai scored second half goals in the match in which both the sides ended up with 10-man. 

Philippines’ Christian Floren got the marching order in the 62nd minute and goalscorer Huy was also cautioned twice with the second being in the 79th minute.

FEU lashes back at football federation, explains Under-16 no-show of Tams trio

FAR EASTERN University fired back at the Philippine Football Federation, denying accusations that they refused to cooperate and release players to the national team.

“I think we are the most cooperative in terms of the national team,” said FEU athletic director Mark Molina, pointing out that the school had always been willing to lend players to the national team under the condition that their stint won’t affect their academics.

Molina made the remark in reaction to a Spin.ph story posted Monday of Philippine Football Federation general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes expressing dismay that the school didn’t lend its players for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 championships that will start on Wednesday in Malaysia.

“Kung walang problema sa academics, walang problema. But if they are on probation, they can’t join. Kasi kapag bumagsak ’yung bata, kawawa yung bata at kasalanan ko,” Molina added.

The PFF said FEU's Chester Gio Pabualan, Renz Saldivar, and Orlan Togores failed to show up for the last practice of the team before leaving for Kuala Lumpur. The three were then dropped, leaving the Under-16 Azkals with only 19 players for the Asian joust.

Under-16 Azkals coach Anto Gonzales said FEU's coach Kim Chul Su had kept the Tamaraws trio from joining the national squad due to “various reasons, a number of issues against the federation and the coaches.”

Molina admitted that, at the moment, FEU will not be lending its players to the national team until a similar case in the Under-19 team involving the school's Arnel Amita is resolved.

Molina said national coach Marlon Maro and team manager Alvin Carranza had asked for the services of Amita for the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-19 Championships in Indonesia on September 7 to 23.

FEU initially refused to release Amita since he was under academic probation, but later agreed to let him join the team from September 8 to 15 after being cleared to play by his professors.

But the school later found out that Amita was booked to leave for Indonesia on September 18, in violation of the dates agreed upon.

“I already requested our football coaches not to allow anyone to join the national team because of what happened to Amita,” said Molina.

Generally, however, MOlina pointed out FEU has been generous in lending players to the national team, so long as there are no scheduling conflicts with the UAAP tournament.

“I can only speak for FEU but Richard Escoto is part of the youth basketball team that just left yesterday. One of our players, Paolo Bugas, he is only second year college but we allowed him to join the Azkals. Gilas, nagpahiram din kami ng player in RR Garcia, as well as in track and field.

“Ayaw lang namin i-disregard yung academics kasi papaano kung bumagsak ’yung bata,” said Molina.

FEU had already written the PFF about its stand and what had transpired in the Amita case.

“Until we hear a response from them, we will not allow any players. Pwede namang pag-usapan ’yun,” Molina said.

Borlongan stands at forefront as Under-16 Azkals vie in AFC Championship qualifiers

THE `future’ of Philippine football faces yet another severe test as the national Under-16 boys’ squad takes part in the Asian Football Confederation Championship qualifiers kicking off on Wednesday in Malaysia.

Composed of some of the finest teenage booters from Metro Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Cebu, Oroquieta, Dumaguete, Masbate, Davao and Bukidnon, and one from the US, the U-16 Azkals will be up against tough competition in Group J, where they are bracketed with Japan, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

National coach Anto Gonzales is counting on striker Jeremiah “JB” Borlongan, along with midfielders Mark Winhoffer and Darius Diamante, and defender Josh Miller to lead the squad.

John Abraham, Rexon Capellan, Marco Casambre, Brian Haim, Chrisitian Lapas, Kintaro Miyagi are the rest of the defenders, while Jovan Marfiga, Sebastian Patangan, Javier Romero-Salas, Ray Sanciangco are the midfielders.

Michael Asong, Harel Dayan, and Jose Yared are the goalkeepers, while forwards Dimitri Limbo and Vincent Lovitos complete the 19-man roster.

“I think we have a good future for Philippine football within this team,” said Gonzales, whose squad last competed in the Asean Football Federation U-16 Championship last month in Myanmar where they won one of four games.

Thomas Roy, who came over from Germany to become a grassroots development consultant and serve as the team’s technical official, liked what he saw from his initial observations.

“I was surprised because I saw a lot of very good players,” the German said. “They are technically and tactically good.”

The Filipino booters flew to Kuala Lumpur on Monday and will have no less than Japan as their first opponent on Wednesday, followed by Indonesia on Friday, before ending their group stage campaign against Vietnam on Sunday.

“Japan is levels ahead in terms of development. I told the boys let’s just play the best possible way you can and show the other countries that we can play good football also and not just parking the bus and just clearing the ball,” Gonzales said.

“We want to play possession and keep the ball and go for the attack when the opportunity comes. That’s gonna be the approach against Japan,” he added.

Little Azkals vie for honors in Asean U-16

SOME of the Philippines’ finest homegrown footballers team up to vie for honors in the Asean Football Federation Under-16 Championship kicking off on Tuesday in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.
Twenty teenagers were picked from Metro Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Cebu, Oroquieta, Dumaguete, Masbate, and Bukidnon, and one from the US to form the Little Azkals.
Striker Jeremiah “JB” Borlongan is expected to lead the squad, along with midfielders Mark Winhoffer and Darius Diamante, and defender Josh Miller — players whom head coach Anto Gonzales believes could make it to the Azkals’ roster in the future.
Michael Asong, Marco Casambre, Harel Dayan, Jed Delariarte, Major Ebarle, Brian Haim, Dimitri Limbo, Jovan Marfiga, Chester Pabualan, Ivan Palmero, Sebastian Patangan, John Saldivar, James Sambalod, Ray Sanciangco, and Orlan Togores complete the roster.
The Little Azkals’ first assignment is Malaysia on Wednesday. The Filipinos then take on Indonesia on Friday, Singapore on Sunday, and Laos next Tuesday.
Group A is made up of the host country, Brunei, Vietnam, Cambodia, and newcomer Australia.
The top two teams from each group advance to the crossover semifinals, beginning August 31.
The core of the squad last participated in the Fam-Frenz Asean Championship in June, finishing fifth among six teams in Group B with three victories in 10 games.
Gonzales will be assisted by Jose Maria Aberasturi, with Anthony Albao as goalkeeping coach. Maja Año (team coordinator) and Audrey Mariano (physiotherapist) complete the team staff.

Teen Azkals suit up for Kanga Cup, AFF U19

 The Philippines' Teen Azkals will compete in Australia's Kanga Cup in July, and the ASEAN Football Federation's Under-19 Youth Championship in Indonesia in September, team officials said over the weekend.

Eighteen members of the Philippines' Under-19 national training pool will compete in Canberra, Australia in the Kanga Cup from July 7 to 12, according to team manager Alvin Carranza. They will vie for the U-18 Male Cup against nine other teams.

The Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the Asian Football Confederation have sanctioned the Kanga Cup, which the FFA said is the largest international youth football tournament in the southern hemisphere with about 230 teams and some 3,700 players participating.

The organizer of the Kanga Cup is Capital Football, the governing body of football in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

At the AFF U19 Youth Championships, the Teen Azkals are in Group A, which includes Laos, Singapore, Australia, Cambodia, and Timor Leste,  In Group B are Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

The youth championships will be from September 9 to 22 in Surabaya, East Java.

Of the 18 in the Kanga Cup roster, 14 are based in the Philippines, two are in Germany, one is in the United States, and another is in Australia. They were chosen from the U-19 national training pool, which has 38 members as of June 2013.
 “The training pool have been training together for many months. We also had a summer camp last April. We have been maintaining the pool and adding to it over time whenever we spot talents here and abroad because this is a long term effort,” Carranza said.

Four on the Kanga roster are students at Far Eastern University, three study at the University of the Philippines, two are Lasallians, one hails from Ateneo de Davao, another from San Beda and one from Benguet National High School.

Team captain Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong of the men's national football team said in an interview with GMA News Online during a gathering of the Teen Azkals' members and supporters over the weekend that international competitions serve to “improve the caliber of players and prepare them for tougher challenges.”

Assistant team manager Ramon “Chito” Manuel said the development of the Teen Azkals is a long-term program of the Philippine Football Federation that aims to make the country qualify for the FIFA Youth World Cup in 2019. “The programs of the various national youth football teams is also linked to the PFF grassroots development efforts,” he said.

PFF technical coordinator Bert Honasan said the country's top football coaches are key elements of the programs to popularize football nationwide.

“The coaches make contact with and mentor the football talents as young as 6 to those in their late teens through the various football festivals conducted in the regions and provinces,” Honasan told GMA News Online.

“Teen Azkals' coaching staff has some of the country's ranking coaches," Honasan noted. Head coach Marlon Maro has the AFC A License. Assistant coach Glenn Hilig has the AFC B License while goalkeeper coach Noel Marcaida has the AFC A License.

Honasan also said that while the Visayas and Mindanao are the traditional breeding ground of homegrown talents, some growth is emerging in Luzon.

Coach wants continuity

A CONTINUITY plan will be proposed by the Teen Azkals coaching staff, which will make sure that the development of Under-19 Cebuano players will be monitored.
This was revealed by Teen Azkals head coach Glen Ramos, who assisted head coach Marlon Maro in last week’s tryouts held at the Aboitiz Sports Field from May 14 to 17.
More than 40 players showed up, including booters from Mimaropa, Masbate and Dipolog, while others also participated in the group’s soccer school.
“The coaches were really surprised that there were a lot from Cebu in this category and they both possesed skills and talents,” said Ramos.
Impressed by the boys’ performance, Maro suggested for Ramos to take over and handle the Teen Azkals Cebu players, who will be screened from 40 to 22 players based on the tryout.
Most of the booters were born 1996 and 1997, and the coaches would have wanted to assist in their development.

Teen Azkals clinic ends today at Aboitiz

THE Teen Azkals Soccer Clinic will have its final day today at the Aboitiz Sports Field.
The clinic started last Tuesday and was led by Teen Azkals head coach Marlon Maro and assistant Glen Ramos. It will culminate with a short training session and the
participants will receive certificates and Azkals magazines.
The clinic attracted 39 participants, while the simultaneous tryout for the 19-Under national team also attracted 39.
Among the registrants for the clinic were Aladin Arranquez III, Uriel Lorenzo Labadan, Pat Nicolas Cabanes, Jian De Los Santos, Khalil Alquilos, Kalvin Nino Harvey Panares, Kiann Partosa and Agustin Roa.
Some players who showed for the 19-under tryouts were Roy Wayne Aipperspach Jr., Leon Douglas Hagedorn, Patrick Valenzuela, Jerico Dagsa, Shane Sarmiento, Marlon Ewayan and Marc Joseph Jims Felicilda.
“Nalipay ra pud ko kay daghan ni-tryout,” said Ramos.
The tryout is the last of a series of tryouts for the selection of the 19-under national team.
Ramos said that they are still evaluating the players but are hoping they will be able to announce the final roster next week.
The U-19 is set to join in the Barotac Nuevo Fiesta Cup at Barotac, Panay Island and they will leave for Australia on July to bid in the Kanga Cup.

Teen Azkals to hold three-day clinic in Cebu

TEEN Azkals Soccer School will visit Cebu to conduct a football clinic in all age group categories from May 14 to 17, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Aboitiz Sports Field.

The four-day sessions will be handled by Philippines 19-Under national head coach Marlon Maro, who will be assisted by Glen Ramos.

Registration fee for the clinic is P2,500 and comes with a free Teen Azkals jersey.

Team managers Alvin Carranza and Chito Manuel will also be present as it will also be an opportunity to scout potential players for the 19-Under national team, also dubbed the Teen Azkals.

But Ramos said that the scouting will not be only limited to players in the 19-under division as it encompasses other age group categories as well.

“We’ll keep an eye on other age group players like those born in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 players who can be endorsed to national coaches,” said Ramos.

The national team is preparing for the 2013 Asian Football Confederation 19-under Qualifiers this October 26 in Japan.

It has conducted two national tryouts in San Carlos and Manila and also scouted players in universities.

The coaching staff is evaluating players who will make it to the final roster and will hold a final selection phase next month.

They will have weekend camps from June to September and a local camp from May 28 to June 8.

In July, the Teen Azkals are expected to leave for either Thailand or Vietnam for a two-week overseas camp and a week before the qualifiers, they will fly to USA or Japan for the final camp.

4 Cebuanos relish training with PHL U19 team

IT was a good a learning experience for the four Cebuanos who showed up 
for the second camp of the under-19 Teen Azkals in Manila last week.

University of San Carlos booters Keen Agot, Junjay Arizabal, Renko Gaudiel 
and University of San Jose Recoletos’ Raphael De Guzman were among the 
many hopefuls who joined the nationwide camp.

“I was very happy and shocked with the training,” said Agot, who is 
trying out for the midfield.

It was Agot’s first shot in a national tryout and he was able to observe 
how it was different from their regular trainings in school.

He said that trainings are already patterned after countries outside,
 more rigorousand intense.

“Nagkadugay kay nagkalisod. Hangak gyud,” said Agot.

Every morning, the boys did some fitness drills and ball control sets 
and practiced their shooting in the afternoon.

They just came back yesterday from a weeklong training and they were 
among those 18 players selected to play the tuneup games against 
Green Archers and Global FC.

Teen Azkals coaching staff Glen Ramos said they are still evaluating 
the players and only after then will they release the 25-man lineup.

Ramos said the Teen Azkals Academy Sports Clinic will be held in 
Cebu next month with the Under-19 coaching staff.

The clinic will be held from May 14 to 19 and costs P2,500. 
At the same time, they will also scout potential players in Cebu
 who can join the under-19 team.

The lineup is expected to be named in June, a month before
 the team is set to have a training camp in Australia.

4 Cebuanos eye spots in PH U19

FOUR young Cebuano booters have taken the opportunity to be part of the national under-19 team dubbed as the Teen Azkals.
Keen Agot, Junjay Arizabal, Renko Gaudiel and Rafael de Guzman are now in Manila to join the training for the national team. This is a follow up from the first tryouts last March in San Carlos City and the four got into the 39-man pool.
Agot, Arizabal and Gaudiel from University of San Carlos stayed only for three days in the two-week first tryout session because their school recalled them.
Since classes are out and they are on vacation, they decided to push their luck on getting the chance to join the national rooster.
Agot and Gaudiel are applying for the midfield position, while Arizabal is trying out as a striker. De Guzman, who is from the University of San Jose Recoletos, is a goalkeeper.
The week-long tryout will be the last stop before the team releases its 25-man lineup.
For this second tryout, players from the different parts of the country are in Manila and will be training under head coaches Glenn Ramos and Marlon Maro.
“Pakita ra gyud namo among performance ug dili magpalupig,” said Agot.
This is Agot’s first time to try out for the national team and said he was inspired by his family, friends and teammates.
The training session is twice a day and they also had a practice game against the Green Archers last Wednesday and they will play with Global FC today.
The Teen Azkals is formed for the 2013 Asian Football Confederation U-19 Qualifiers, Asian Football Federation U-19 and the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.
Agot shared that if they get in the final selection, he will be willing to take a break from school to focus on his the opportunity to play for the national team.

Strong Teen Azkals eleven shaping up

HOPING to also make an impact at the international level, the Philippine Under-19 football squad is laying the foundation in forming a strong lineup for the AFF Under-19 and AFC Under-19 Qualifying Tournament this year.

Dubbed the Teen Azkals, the team—made up mostly of standouts from last year’s Palarong Pambansa—held a weeklong camp recently at Evia City football field in Las Piñas.

Newcomers, including Fil-Australian goalkeeper Jaime Cheng, were also given a chance to show their wares during the camp that also served as a tryout.

“From this pool will come the national team that will compete in the AFF Under-19 and AFC Under-19 qualifiers that will be held later this year,” team manager Alvin Carranza said.

Head coach Marlon Maro said he is in the process of finalizing the team’s composition.

“We will assess how these players attack and defend in team formations as well as individually, and see if they can work within our system,” Maro said.

Two booters eyed for Phl training pool

TWO Baguio–Benguet booters made it to the national training pool of the Teen Azkals recently.

Junel Bautista, a fourth year high school student from Benguet National High School and Randy Mangaoang, taking up engineering at the University of Baguio, were chosen from the Luzon tryout at University of the Philippines-Diliman.
The two were accompanied by four other players who did not make it to the national try out on August 4-12 at San Carlos, Negros Occidental, namely: Jeremiah Cerezo, Leoken Ti, Kenneth Mansueto and John Michael Abarico.

“They were taken in because of their physique and speed kahit mahiyain sila nung try-out,” said coach Ariston Bocalan of the Cordillera Goshenland Football Club.

The Teen Azkals are boys aged 17 years old and under and will be a training pool for the men’s national football team.
The two 17-year-old teeners played during the recently concluded CARAA and the Lingayen Palarong Pambansa where Bautista was a defender while Mangaoang was a utility.
Both Bautista and Mangaoang together with the four booters were part of the 34 shortlisted of Luzon-based teenage boys seeking to become members of the national Teen Azkals team and will train for the Asian Football Confederation Under-19 championships next year.
The 75 expected to converge in San Carlos City will be trimmed further to 25 for the AFC U-19 training pool.
“Luckily, out of the six na pinatryout natin may dalawang napili,” added CGFC’s Nestor Udan.

Teen Azkals tryouts in Panaad Aug. 27

The Philippine national Under 16 football team will hold a tryout at the Panaad pitch at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The tryouts dubbed as the 1st Teen Azkals Festival will be conducted by national coach Glenn Ramos and supervised by team manager Alvin Carranza.

New talents are expected to join in the tryouts and those who display impressive skills will be tapped to join the exhibition games between the Teen Azkals and seasoned local teams.

On August 28, the Teen Azkals will play against the Under 19 team at 8:30 a.m. and will face the Ceres Team the next day at 3:30 p.m. Their final game will be against University of St. La Salle at 3:30 p.m. on August 30.

“This is a very laudable move from the team manager to keep the team together and explore new horizons for the team, and for the others as well,” Philippine Football Federation Secretary General Ramon Manuel said.

Carranza said the festival is aimed at spreading friendship and unifying Filipinos, who are known to be sports-minded, for the love of football.

“We hope to develop talents from the grassroots and seek scholarships for the young talents,” Carranza said, adding that with enough funding, the PFF hopes to establish a football university to mold young talents inside the Ultra-Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission compound.

The Teen Azkals is composed of 19 homegrown players -- handpicked with the help of the football associations in the provinces all over the country.
