AFC U-16 Women : Hosts hit for six

Manila: The Philippines chances of qualifying for the AFC U-16 Women's Championship 2013 ended on Wednesday when the Group D hosts went down to a 6-1 defeat to Thailand.
Sojirat Pradidsorn opened the scoring in the 6th minute and added the second of her hat-trick seven minutes later as the Thais made a flying start to the match at the Rizal Memorial Track and Football Stadium.
Michaela Adriano pulled one back for the Philippines in the 24th minute but the Thais quickly regained the upperhand with goals from skipper Sudarat Chuchuen (35th) and Tuangporn Yakaewla (38th) giving Thailand a comfortable 4-1 lead at the break.
Sojirat sealed her hat-trick with ten minutes left to play and there was still time for substitute Passanan Thong-Im, who replaced Sudarat on the hour-mark, to make it 5-1 with four minutes left to play.
Thailand will now take on neighbours Myanmar on Sunday to see who qualifies to the AFC U-16 Women's Championship finals alongside Australia, who booked their place at the tournament proper earlier at the Rizal Memorial Stadium when they defeated Myanmar 5-1 in their second Group D match.
The qualifying competition sees the fourteen lowest-ranked teams divided into four geographically-based groups with the teams in each centralised group playing in a round-robin league format. The winner and runner-up of each group will qualify for the next year's AFC U-16 Women's Championship finals.

Philippines falter in group C opener

Manila: The Philippines went down to a 2-1 defeat to Myanmar on Wednesday as the Qualifying Group C hosts made a losing start in their campaign for a place in the AFC Women's U-16 Championship 2013.

The first half of the match at the Rizal Memorial Track and Football Stadium before Myanmar midfielder Wai Zin Hnin broke the deadlock five minutes after the interval.

Myanmar coach Phone Naing replaced Thandar Soe with Phyu Hnin Thwe for the second half and it turned out to be an inspired move with the substitute striker doubling her side's advantage a minute shy of the hour mark before Philippines' skipper Shannon Arthur scored a last minute consolation for the hosts.

With one round of Group C matches played Australia top the standings following their emphatic 5-1 victory over Thailand in Wednesday's earlier match with the Philippines third on goal difference ahead of the Thais.

The qualifying competition sees the fourteen lowest-ranked teams divided into four geographically-based groups with the teams in each centralised group playing in a round-robin league format. The winner and runner-up of each group will qualify for the AFC U-16 Women's Championship 2013.

Phl kicks off AFC bid vs Myanmar

The Philippines takes on Myanmar in the opener of the Asian Football Confederation’s Under-16 Women’s Championships 2013 Qualifiers which kicks off tomorrow at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
“Myanmar has always been a tough team for us. They beat us 1-0 during the AFC U-13 Festival of Football in Vietnam in 2010,” said head trainer Robert Manlulo.
The Phl booters are coming off a two-week training in Bacolod.
The match is set at 6 p.m. after the 3 p.m. duel between Australia and Thailand.
The Phl, Myanmar, Australia and Thailand make up Group C in the 14-team competitions which offers berths in next year’s finals.
The other playdates are on Nov. 9 and 11 with free admission, according to host Philippine Football Federation.
The elims will select the top two teams that will advance to the biennial AFC U-16 Women’s championship final next year.
Fourteen AFC member associations from four Asian regions are vying for eight slots in the 2013 final with four of the 12 berths already sealed through the previous tournaments.

Group A is composed of Jordan, IR Iran, Bahrain and Kuwait while Group B includes India, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan. Group D consists of Chinese Taipei, Guam and Hong Kong.
All teams will play a round-robin league system, which gives three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero for a loss.
RIFA MVP Marty Bautista, a sophomore striker from Miriam College High School, striker Shannon Arthur from Colegio de San Agustin, and midfielder Kyla Inquig from Dumaguete head the Phl team.
Stephanie Ang-Cogswell, a Filipino-Canadian who voluntarily returned to the country to suit up for the team, will be the team’s goalkeeper.

AFC Women`s U16 - The wonderful soccer journey

DR. HENRY Joan Dimaandal swears that hearing the Philippine anthem being played before an international soccer game really touches one's heart. He felt something special when his daughter, 14-year-old Kyrhen Angela Dimaandal, and the rest of the Philippine team stood side by side for the pre-game ceremonies during the recent AFC Under-16 Women's Championship qualifier in Manila.

Not only Dr. Dimaandal. All of the kids playing for the RP team and their parents experienced that remarkable feeling for there was indeed a great sense of nationalism when one plays for flag and country.

This was just a soccer tournament alright, but the players from the host nation were simply exuberant for they have competed in a bigger stage and can proudly tell their friends and relatives that they had not only played but represented the country well.

The Philippines, mentored by Letecia Bautista, finished third in the qualifier against the best in the region on two wins and two losses. The girls beat Timor Leste and Singapore and bowed to Guam and eventual winner Vietnam. Not bad for a team that was formed only two weeks before the tournament.

Six of the players came from Davao City. Aside from Dimaandal, those who represented the country were Erika Lorraine Turtur, Noreen Kim Maligad, Sheinna April Chavez, Alyssa Marie Ang and Janna Raizel Barcemo, the youngest among them at 12.

Dr. Dimaandal said all the girls were fielded in the tournament, with Turtur playing for the entire four matches as goalkeeper without substitution. Dimaandal had a goal while Barcemo scored two goals in the East Timor game, even giving the Philippine team its first goal in the tournament with her 10th minute strike.

The six Davao girls were named to the RP team after a series of tryouts conducted by Philippine Football Federation (PFF) officials. And based on their credentials, these kids really have skills.

Dimaandal, Maligad, Ang and Turtur had competed in the prestigious Gothia World Youth Cup in Sweden in 2008. Barcemo, before playing in the AFC qualifier, also represented Team Philippines in the U-13 soccer tournament in Vietnam last July.

Now that the tournament has culminated, the girls are back in Davao and immediately took care of their studies after missing school for two weeks.

In no time, these kids will be back in the field to showcase their talents once again for there's more football matches to be played.

AFC U-16 women - Davao girls shine in RP win

TWO girl booters from Davao City grabbed international spotlight when they came through with impressive performances for the Philippines in the AFC Under-16 Women's Championship Qualifying Round (Group A) at the University of Makati football field.

The pride of Davao, Janna Raizel Barcemo and Kyrhen Dimaandal, accounted for three of the seven goals as the country crushed Timor-Leste, 7-0, for its first win in the tournament.

Barcemo, only 12 years old but full of soccer skills, scored two goals and actually authored the first goal for Team Philippines in the competition when she struck in the 10th minute.

The early goal coming from the young Barcemo sparked wild celebration from among Filipino supporters and set the tone for a Philippine romp. Barcemo scored her second goal in the 22nd.

Dimaandal, another talented star in the making, scored the country's last goal in the 80th minute.

It was a big win for the RP team as it opened the event with a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Guam.

The Davao Football Association (DFA) could not help but expressed elatiom on the performance of the Davao youngsters.

"They are really doing great. We very much appreciate the support of their parents. Because of them the kids were able to join the national team and make not only Davao but our country proud," DFA secretary general said.

Aside from Barcemo and Dimaandal, four more players from Davao are in the RP line-up. They are Noreen Kim Maligad, Alyssa Marie Ang, Erika Lorraine Turtur and Sheinna April Chavez.

According to Dimaandal's father, Dr. Henry Dimaandal, her daughter and Maligad sustained suffered minor injuries and were doubtful for the Vietnam match. (CRAM)

RP Booters Rout Timor, 7-0

MANILA, Philippines — An inspired Philippine team frolicked on a rainy Tuesday to score an emphatic 7-0 win over Timor-Leste for its first victory in the AFC Under-16 Women's Championship 2011 Qualifying Round 1 (Group A) at the University of Makati football field.

The Nationals relentlessly attacked Timor-Leste’s lair and produced their first goal in the 10th minute through Janna Raizel Barcemo’s effort which sparked a wild celebration among RP supporters.

She again scored in the 22nd just eight minutes after Alessandra Camcam knocked in her first goal for a 3-0.

Camcam matched Barcemo’s two-goal effort with a goal in the 32nd as the Nationals took a 5-0 lead at halftime in the tournament organized by the Philippine Football Federation and supported by Philippine Sports Commission and Asia Brewery (Summit).

Other scorers for the RP side, which absorbed a 2-0 defeat to Guam last Sunday, were Sara Castaneda (43rd) Regine Metillo (68th) and Kyrhen Dimaandal (80th).

The victory is already a big achievement for the RP side which is competing in a international event for the first time.

The Nationals, however, face a daunting task in their next game as they battle title-favorite Vietnam which earlier drubbed Singapore, 9-0 – the most lopsided win so far in the nine-day tournament.

Meantime, Guam roared to its third straight win by outsteadying Singapore, 2-1.

Guam Blanks RP XI

MANILA, Philippines — Guam streaked to its second win by downing the gutsy Philippine side, 2-0, in the AFC Under-16 Women's Championship 2011 Qualifying Round 1 (Group A) Sunday at the University of Makati football field.

After yielding two goals in the first half, the Filipinos intensified their attack in the final half in the hope of turning the game around but to no avail.

Guam’s victory was a huge follow-up to its 4-0 win over Timor Leste in the opening day last Friday which was witnessed by hundreds of spectators.

Still, it was Vietnam which made the biggest ripple in the 9-day tournament organized by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), by dumping Singapore, 9-0, also last Friday.

Fast emerging as the regional power in the sport, the Vietnamese rattled the Singaporeans with their crisp and accurate passing to score easy goals.

The Filipinos hope to notch their first win today when they collide against Timor Leste at 9 a.m. also at the same venue.

They will face Vietnam on Friday and Singapore on Sunday.

U-16 Women's Football Elims Under Way this Friday

MANILA, Philippines — The AFC U-16 Women's Championship 2011 Qualifying Round 1 (Group A) starts this Friday with favorite Vietnam going up against Singapore at the University of Makati football field.

The event, which drew five countries, including the RP side, is the second qualifying tournament the country is hosting in less than a month, an indication of the country’s good image among Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officials although it has to yet win a big one in a big stage.

The RP Under-16 faces a tall order but it hopes to give its rivals a stiff challenge in the event serving as a follow-up to its successful staging of the AFC Under-19 Women's Championship Group A Qualifiers last month.

Vietnam, a rising power in the region, is heavily tipped to dominate the event organized by the Philippine Football Federation and sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Also taking part in the 10-day tournament are Singapore, Guam and Timor Leste.

The teams play a single round robin with the No. 1 team advancing to the next phase of the event.

Vietnam starts its campaign against Singapore at 9 a.m. while Guam collides with Timor Leste at 3 p.m.

The RP Under-16 sees action on Sunday against Guam before facing Timor Leste on Tuesday, Vietnam of Friday and Singapore on Sunday.

Villaflor: How to build two nat’l teams in six weeks

By Noel S. Villaflor

SIMON McMenemy has roughly six weeks to prepare for his first international tournament as manager of the Philippine Men’s National Team (MNT).

In an Aug. 25 article published on England’s Worthing Herald (courtesy of a post from Filipinofootball.blogspot.com), the 32-year-old coach flew in last Monday to the Philippines for his new stint.

McMenemy will be on a two-month probation before signing a one-year contract, if things go well, the article said. The Englishman was the former assistant manager of Worthing Football Club, which plays at an eight-tier division in English football.

Following the unfortunate Des Bulpin experience, I am sure the National Team Management Office under football visionary Dan Palami has learned its lessons and will try its best to insulate McMenemy from the toxic elements of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).

Earlier this month, Palami had told me that so far, the PFF has granted the management office’s wishes for non-interference.

Hopefully, Palami, who is single-handedly financing the MNT, and McMenemy could forge a potent partnership within this two-month period for a decent showing at the AFC Suzuki Cup that kicks off Oct. 20.

Like McMenemy, another national team coach is looking at only a few weeks to before a big tournament.

Philippine Women’s Under-16 Coach Leticia “Buda” Bautista is hoping to build a team for the AFC Qualifiers on Oct. 15.

She has conducted tryouts in Bacolod, San Carlos City and yesterday in Cebu. Today, she is flying to Davao.

So what does Buda think of yesterday’s tryouts?

“The girls need to improve their basic skills,” she said yesterday after the tryouts at the Aboitiz football field, adding that some of those who were technically sound were “inconsistent.”

She was quick to add, though, that the girls’ performance, given the short span of time to show their wares, could have been mainly due to “kaba” or nervousness.

Buda might be nervous herself with the tough international competition ahead of her.

By next week, she would have picked the members of the U-16 squad.

When I asked her of her expectations, her answer was grounded: “During the tournament, what we want is to control the games.”

That meant not allowing the teams to dictate the tempo and to stop them from scoring.

Buda doesn’t aim for the spectacular, but she pointed out that the U-16 selection serves a far-reaching purpose.

“With the core of the U-16 squad, we can identify U-14 players, and for the long term, the U-19,” she said with a hint of optimism.

Women`s U16 - Football try-out at Aboitiz Sports Field

CEBU, Philippines - Young Cebuana booters will get a chance to be part of the national team if they make an impression during the try-out set tomorrow at the Aboitiz Sports Field.

The try-out is open to female players aged 16 years old and below.

Former RP Team member and now RP Under-16 head coach Leticia Bautista will oversee the try-out facilitated by the Cebu Football Association.

CFA secretary-general Bro. Mari Aberrasturi could not remember that a tryout for any of the RP women’s squad had been held here before so they hope that local talents will grab this chance.

The tryout will be done right after the opening ceremony of the 13th Aboitiz Football Cup. – THE FREEMAN
