On-loan Sanchez appears in first practice for Global

By Karlo Sacamos

GLOBAL featured its prized addition for the Singapore Cup when it returned to training camp after a two-week layoff on Wednesday morning.
Rufo Sanchez suited up in his first practice session for the former United Football League champions, who were dethroned by the Spaniard’s mother team, Stallion, last month.
Stallions coach Ernie Nierras on Wednesday clarified the transfer of the newly crowned Golden Ball and Boot awardee is just temporary and only for the Singapore Cup, where Global is pitted against DPMM FC(Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota) in a two-leg quarterfinal on July 24 and 27.
Jason de Jong is also on loan from Stallion and has been with Global since April.
Global defender Carli de Murga, a national team mainstay with Spanish blood, expressed delight over Sanchez’s arrival.
“Rufo is one of the best strikers in the league and he gives something special to the team,” De Murga said. “And it’s also better for me because I can speak with him in my (other) language.”
Sanchez, who had 18 goals in the recently concluded UFL season, has been instrumental in the Stallions' sweep of the Cup and League titles this season.
Nierras reiterated Sanchez, along with compatriot and defensive stalwart Joaco Cañas, is still under contract with the Stallions until next year.
