MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) underwent a change in leadership as Jose Mari Martinez was booted out as president by over a 2/3 vote of 32 provincial associations and Mariano Araneta was elected in his place during the National Congress at the PhilSports Audio-Visual Room in Mandaluyong yesterday.
But Martinez, accompanied by two lawyers, questioned the legal basis of his removal, insisting that Congress could not act on a motion for his ouster unless it was endorsed by the PFF Board of Governors. The speculation was he would go to court and try to hang on to his position despite a vote of 26 affirming his removal with two abstentions and five absensions.
The voting in Congress was witnessed by former PFF presidents Rene Adad and Johnny Romualdez, POC chairman Monico Puentevella and former POC president Cristy Ramos.
The Congress was preceded by a Board of Governors meeting at the PFF building in Pasig in the morning. Martinez refused to recognize the legality of the meeting and did not attend even as secretary-general Chito Manuel confirmed a quorum of 11 of 13 members.
Araneta said the Board was convened to continue the Oct. 29 session where action on certain matters was deferred. Tarlac representative Glenn Carecativo was elected by the Board to preside in Martinez’ place. The Board endorsed a motion to raise the issue of Martinez’ ouster before the Congress. Martinez said the Board meeting was unlawful.
Martinez was previously given an ultimatum to produce about P2.8 million of missing funds from the PFF coffers. When he failed to deliver, the Board decided to endorse his ouster at the Congress.
Araneta said the PFF will exhaust all means to get back the missing amount from those accountable as confirmed in an external audit report. “We will determine culpability,” he said. “No one will get away with this. We’re doing this for the love of football.”
After Martinez was ousted, the Congress voted Araneta as new president unanimously. “Now, the hard work begins,” said Araneta.
Aside from the change of leadership, the Congress also approved Leyte as a regular member and Sorsogon as a probationary member. The 2010 budget was ratified as the same for next year.
“We hope this ends the dissension in the PFF and we begin working together for the good of football,” said Araneta. “If Mari wants to contest the decision of the Congress, it is his right.”
Romualdez earlier issued a memorandum to the PFF provincial associations, calling for justice to be served. He urged Martinez to return to the PFF unauthorized payments and investments made without Board approval. He threatened Martinez with a legal suit and impeachment if the money was not returned. Romualdez made good his threat to remove Martinez when he couldn’t settle his accountability.
The Congress was initially set at the Legends Hotel but the PFF had to relocate because it still owed over P200,000 to the place and couldn’t pay up. The obligation was incurred in line with the recent PFF hosting of the under-16 ladies tournament which used the Legends Hotel as the host facility. The tournament wound up with a deficit of P2.2 million.
The PFF’s shaky financial condition was traced to poor management, resulting in the removal of Martinez as a signatory in all the organization’s bank accounts. It was estimated that the PFF receives an annual subsidy of over $400,000 from external sources, primarily FIFA, but has been unable to make both ends meet.
Araneta’s election as PFF president will give him the mandate to finish the remaining year in Martinez’ term.

YEAHHHHHHH !!!!! WOOHOOO !!!! YEAHHHHHHHHHH !!!! Thank you GOD !!!!! The EVIL PIG is gone !!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Good Damn Lord!
ReplyDeleteYHAASSS! Hopefully good people will take over in the future and will continue to make the pff better and better
ReplyDeleteWhat gave you the right and call the man the evil PIG...are you a better Man ??? ... why don't you run for the presidency of PFF , and cheer for yourself , maybe you are one of the person that was given bribe money to vote against your president... maybe you were promised a position or hold your present one , or maybe you are the one who leaked the vital information for the mans downfall . Tell us who you are and Face it like a man... You are Using God's name in Vain ... who is you GOD? ...Power,Money,Prestige,Luxury...choose and tell us who is the more evil pig now.
ReplyDeleteThe right to free speech, which is the same right you have. But mind you, I begin to mistrust a man who uses "God" in his posts.
ReplyDeleteI am not using God... you did thank God that the evil pig is gone... You used it first am I right. Do you think God will accept your thanks calling the man a Bad name.
ReplyDeleteThe questions of who your GOD is should be answered by your own conscience and motives. And you begin to mistrust a person using "God" in his post, why??? ... At least in my heart I know who "God" is.
Point of clarification: The use of "God" as in your manner of a holier-than-tho, proselytizing approach, is what i claim to be suspect.
ReplyDeleteI was not the one who called him an evil pig, but i was defending everyone's right to speak their mind, including yours.
Now to answer your question: First of all, words are cheap. Second, in my experience, there have been men who claim to be godly and publicly display their affinity to god, and yet they are the first ones to violate god's teachings.
it is a Fact that we are all sinners , i am not acting to convert other people to any opinion nor religion in my approach ... I am not the holier-than-thou or a self righteously-pious person acting to be of superior virtue than anyone. And Most especially I do not claim to be one... I am just speaking my mind like anyone else...and that was my opinion...
ReplyDeleteFACT OR FICTION ... Nagtatanong lang po...
ReplyDelete1.Niloko ba ni Henry Tsai si Mr.Martinez?
2.Is the money being charged to Martinez in Henry Tsai's Bank Account or under his wife or another company name?
3.Ginamit ba ni Mr.Araneta ang case ni Mr.Martinez kay Henry Tsai and get all the information from Tsai to discredit Mr. Martinez and eventually used it for the "Oust Campaign" against the latter?
4.Kunyari ba tutulungan ni Mr.Araneta si Mr.Martinez getting the Man's confidence and trust , and divulge more than the PFF matters to him.Did Mr. Martinez told the whole scenario about the lost money. Nagsabi naman ba ng totoo si Mr.Martinez at inamin ang pagkakamaling nagawa niya at ito ba ay babayaran niya kahit hindi pa niya nababawi ang pera that was swindled from him by henry tsai.
5.Did Mr.Araneta asked for the courtesy resignation of Mr. Martinez , and when he did not heed to it for the purpose of redeeming himself , he started the OUST MARTINEZ Movement.
6.Did Mr. Araneta used all this information and held on to his "ACES" to Oust Mr. Martinez and held him solely accountable and discrediting him to all members of PFF Congress.Did he even thought of of really helping Mr. Martinez in his predicament and use this information to pin down the real culprit?
6.Did some members of Congress who resisted to vote the ousting Mr.Martinez threatened or have the instinctive notion that they will be booted out from the support of PFF once Mr.Araneta is elected or once Mr.Martinez is ousted.Which is very likely to happen kung baga sa Pusoy "4 Aces" na ang hawak niyang card...And It did materialize Mr. Martinez was ousted by Congress di ba.
Either way , members of congress who allegedly sold their votes or not are in the win win scenario. But deep in their thought and heart are they really fully convinced and acted like a jury pinning down an assumed criminal in a fair trial.
7.Bakit nakita few days ago na nasa PFF office si Henry Tsai with Mr.Araneta ? is this one of his black mail , payback time na ba at sinisingil na niya si mr. Araneta o baka mamanipulahin nila ang sitwasyon para kunyari walang kasalanan si Tsai at si Mr. Martinez lang ang meron.
FACT OR FICTION 2 ... Nagtatanong po Ulit...

nice read! muntik na ako aniwala dito ----> " Facts or Fiction". less than a month after the comment was written, Martinez was officially ousted after FIFA and AFC made their own investigations. Football is now back on track 100X better in less than a year of Mr. Araneta's reign as PFF president as compared to 3 years of corruption by the president he replaced. I know Red Avelino personally, and he is not one iota of how the scriptwriter of the comment "Fact or Fiction" portrayed him to be. You can never put a good man down" ika nga, but people can always try...Desperate attempt to save Martinez perhaps, too late. The rest as they say,is history.
ReplyDeleteI've changed my Pov in football and other athletes ever since i met Red Avelino. He's a pervy.
