Gone in 3 minutes: Laos bully Azkals

Ak Fauzi Salleh
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, February 27, 2012

THREE goals in three minutes helped Laos hand the Philippines their second defeat in as many games in this year's edition of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) last night.

Sithideth Khantahavong, Soukaphone Vongchiengkham and Keoviengpheth Lithideth were all on the scoresheet as Laos defeated the Azkals 3-1 at the Balapan Track & Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

The Philippines, who are now bottom of Group A, were thrashed 8-2 by Myanmar on Friday.

Yesterday's victory puts Laos third of the five-team group.

Both teams started slowly producing no real chances in the first 15 minutes of the game.

The first real chance of the first half fell to the Philippines when midfielder Marvin Janver Malinay Angeles dribbled past three Laos' defenders in the 17th minute on the left side of the box, but only to see his cross blocked by a defender.

Laos captain Lamnao Singto then played a great through ball to Sithideth, who made a very good run behind the Philippines' backline and calmly slotted the ball past Paulo Pascual to give Laos 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

A minute later the Philippine defenders made another mistake allowing Soukaphone to make it 2-0.

The third goal saw Soukaphone Vongchiengkham set up Keoviengpheth for an easy tap in the 25th minute.

Angelo Verheye Marasigan then reduced the deficit in the 41st minute netting in the 41st minute for the Azkals.

The Philippines played better and faster football in the second half. They also moved the ball well, but failed to convert the chances.

Laos had a chance to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute but defender Ketsada Souksavanh saw his spotkick sail over the bar.

"I am not really happy with the performance of the players tonight (Sunday night), they missed so many chances, we also missed a penalty. I am not happy," said Bounlap Khenkitisack, the Laos manager, at a Press conference.

"In the next game we will play Singapore, we do not have the time to watch Singapore play as their game against Indonesia was played at the same time as ours.

"But, I think it is going to be a 50-50 match," he added. The Brunei Times

Philippines coach reduced to tears

Ak Fauzi Salleh
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, February 27, 2012

ZORAN Djordjevic (pic) was left in tears following the Philippines' 3-1 loss to Laos during last night's Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) game.

Their second loss in as many games their first was the 8-2 thrashing they suffered at the hands of Myanmar on Friday the Philippines' head coach seemed heart broken about the result which leaves the Azkals bottom of Group A.

"It's really difficult for us to progress now," said the Serbian at the post-match Press conference at the Balapan Track & Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

"Everything that we planned in this match did not work well. I really feel sorry for my boys, they gave their best in the match.

"I have been coaching for 33 years and have coached in many countries before. I've never seen boys with such a big heart ... it was a mistake for me to put them in a very hard competition when they are not ready yet.

"I hope the people in the Philippines will continue to support these wonderful young players, they are very talented but we need to get support from the Philippines government to get them good preparation to compete in the future," added Djordjevic, who has only coached the team for the past month.

Mathematically though, the Filipinos still have a chance at making the semi-finals if they pick up big wins their next two games and other results go their way.

The Philippines face Singapore tomorrow at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas and meet Indonesia on Sunday at the Balapan Track & Field, in Berakas. The Brunei Times

Caligdong, Gier still doubtful for Malaysia tiff

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine Azkals co-captain Chieffy Caligdong and veteran defender Rob Gier remain doubtful for the international friendly against Malaysia on Feb. 29 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Caligdong is still undergoing therapy for his injured knee and could skip the match to focus on his fitness in time for the AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal, starting March 9.

“I think I’m making progress because I can do sprints now, but I still can’t put a lot of power on my kicks,” said Caligdong, the recipient of the Philippine Sportswriters’ Association’s Mr. Football Award along with Azkals teammate Phil Younghusband.

Gier is nursing a calf problem, but the Filipino-British defender said he could have come on as a substitute against Australia’s Olympic Team in the last match of the Azkals’ training camp in Dubai Thursday night.

“I’m feeling better, but its also difficult to take the risk (of aggravating the injury),” said Gier. “It’s better to be injured now than in the Challenge Cup.”

With Gier unlikely to play, the Azkals will parade the same backline in the last two matches of the camp in the in-form Jason Sabio, Juani Guirado, Ray Jonsson and Carli de Murga.

First-choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has already confirmed his participation in the friendly against the reigning Suzuki Cup champions, which will mark the final game before the Azkals plunge into action in the Challenge Cup.

Also returning to the Azkals fold are Netherlands-based Jason de Jong and brothers Phil and James Younghusband, who missed the Australia match because of a prior commitment.

“I think we will still have a very good team against Malaysia,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami. “As much as we would want Rob and Chieffy to play, we are more worried of their fitness level for the Challenge Cup.”

Meanwhile, the Philippine Under-21 side reinforced by senior team players Nestorio Margarse and Jerry Barbaso left for Brunei yesterday to vie in the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy.

The 11-nation tournament will mark the first time Serbian coach Zoran Dordevic will handle the side formed only two months ago.

“This is good exposure for our young players as we start our build-up for next year’s SEA Games,” said Palami, who also manages the U-21 team.

SEA Games stalwarts Joshua Beloya and Marwin Angeles, who are already regulars in the senior side, will play the first two matches, including the opener against Indonesia on Friday, before returning to Manila in time for the friendly against Malaysia.

Limpag: Half-baked preparation for Bolkiah Cup?

By Mike T. Limpag

Fair Play

Friday, January 27, 2012

NOT too many people know that before Dan Palami took over the senior team, he was the manager of the Under 19 squad that had their breakfast, lunch, dinner and midnight snacks handed to them in 45 minutes during the AFC Under 19 championships qualifiers in 2009.

Because of that humiliating showing, when Dan was offered the job as senior team manager, he vowed not to be as ill-prepared as the Under 19 team.

A lot of folks know that Dan was the manager of the Southeast Asian Games team last November, who, shall we diplomatically say, failed to live up to their newspaper space and TV airtime.

Aside from saying the SEAG team will be better prepared and that they will be joining the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy in Brunei next month, nothing much was heard of the team before the announcement of the PFF hiring Serbian coach Zoran Dordevic a few days ago, and the announcement of a team tryout a week ago.

The last time we joined the Bolkiah Cup, we lost to Myanmar, 9-1, and Cambodia, 6-0, and to Brunei, 3-2, in the final match. That Brunei loss was painful. We were up 2-0 at half-time and lost after conceding two goals in the last two minutes. That squad had Phil Younghusband, and now UFL players Jason Cordova, Matthew Hartmann, Francis Gustilo and Dave Villon.

And now, the big question is, are we headed for a repeat of the SEAG debacle? Are we throwing in an ill-prepared team to an international competition?

The simple answer is yes as this year’s tournament will start on Feb. 25, and if they’re still conducting trials on Jan. 21…

But, it’s not as simple as that.

Dan told me the other day he’s having a hard time gathering the players for practice due to UFL and UAAP duties.

Aah, crap, the collegiate game. It is understandable why colleges hold on to their players since they’re the one paying handsomely for their scholarships but this conflict of schedule could have been avoided by a simple change of schedule—hold the damn football tournament early.

It’s the same problem in Cebu. The college season starts late to give way to the basketball season, and all other tournaments involving the age group have to wait.

This conflict of schedule, too, is what former national team Aris Caslib pointed out as one of the problems in Philippine football when he did his presentation to the PFF Board of Governors last January, 2011.

I guess his suggestion to talk with the UAAP and NCAA guys was never taken?

The Bolkiah trophy will be the first outing of this U21 squad, but it’s not the goal.

Dan is aiming for the AFF U22 contest and the SEA Games next year and I admit that this is one massive preparation.

I’m only afraid, though, that if the team does poorly in the Bolkiah Cup, which will end just as the Challenge Cup is starting, folks will remember SEAG 2011 and well, you know what I mean.

By the way, Dan said he’s going for locally-based players (take note, locally-based, not locals), so perhaps this addresses the criticism on how team chemistry was shot to hell in the SEAG when as many as six players flew in a day before the competitions.

“I’m fixing sight on U23 SEAG as promised, but this team will have to absorb initial setbacks. The good thing is that we are building strong local-based players. Raw talents still, but the new coach sees the diamonds underneath,” Dan said.

Diamonds in the rough is the perfect way to describe the team and I hope we finally see the final product in SEAG 2013.

As for the Bolkiah Cup?

I’m not expecting much but since most of the U21 members played in the SEAG, I expect them to fight as if they have something to prove because those guys really do have something to prove.

So, what’s after Bolkiah? I hope, since this won’t be the first time, the PFF will get to talk with the schools about the release of players. If clubs take a rap for not releasing players to a friendly, shouldn’t the schools/league take some of the heat, too?

“After Bolkiah, I will tour this team around to play senior teams in Bacolod, Iloilo, Cebu, etc. and also friendlies with UFL first divisions.”

PFF sign youth NT coach

Serbian football coach Zoran Dordevic who found success coaching the national squads of Bangladesh, Sudan, and Yemen will now work his magic with the various Philippine National Teams. The 62-year old from Veliki Jovanovac, Serbia arrived last Tuesday, January 17, with Japanese sports journalist Takashi Morimoto who aside from running Deren Sumida, a football club in Mongolia, is a frequent Manila visitor who covers the Philippine Men’s National Team.

Dordevic met with Philippine Football Federation officials led by President Mariano Araneta, General Secretary Rolly Tulay, and National Team Manager Dan Palami on two separate occasions to present his plans on helping the national sides not coached by senior national squad boss Hans Michael Weiss.
