Kaya, Ceres seek to build on gains as Philippine clubs resume AFC Cup campaigns against Singapore foes

From:
KAYA FC and Ceres-La Salle seek to build on their gains as they resume their respective Asian Football Confederation Cup campaigns on Tuesday night.
Riding the momentum of their victories in the second-tier club competition in the continent, the Philippine representatives battle Singaporean counterparts, with Kaya taking on Balestier Khalsa and Ceres facing Tampines Rovers.
Coming off a dramatic 1-0 victory over New Radiant last week, Kaya banks on the home crowd anew as it hosts Balestier Khalsa at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
A win for the reigning United Football League Cup winner, which is running third in Group F with three points, will catapult the squad to the top of four-team standings. Balestier is on top with four points.
“This is the most important game right now,” Kaya star OJ Porteria said on the eve of the match that kicks off at 7:30 p.m. “I feel like if we get three points, we already have a foot into the next round.”
“But no game’s going to be easy,” added the Azkals striker, who sneaked in the game-winner against New Radiant four minutes into stoppage time. “So we have to play even better than we did last game.”
Fortunately, Kaya is once again playing in front of the home fans.
“We just take advantage of the crowd,” Kaya stand-in coach Joel Villarino said. “Balestier is one of the strongest teams in our group.”
On the other hand, Ceres, which shut out Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi, 2-0, on the opponents’ turf in Bangldesh, hopes to taste success away from home anew as the Busmen visit Tampines at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
The encounter will simultaneously kick off as the Kaya-Balestier match with second-running Ceres also looking to take over from leader Tampines in Group E.

Ceres – La Salle beats Bangladesh, 2-0

DHAKA - Adrian Gallardo scored twice as Philippines champions Ceres La Salle earned their first-ever AFC Cup victory with a 2-0 victory against Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the Group E encounter at Dhaka's Bangabandhu National Stadium last night.
The 28-year-old forward, who had scored a late equalizer in the Philippines side's 2-2 draw against Selangor FA on Feb. 23 at the Panaad Stadium, gave the visitors a 25th minute lead with a powerful left-footer before doubling the lead just four minutes later with a neat finish.
The win sees Ceres on four points from two matches while the Bangladesh Premier League champions languish at the bottom with no points.
After a shaky first few minutes, AFC Cup debutants Sheikh Jamal, who had suffered a 4-0 defeat away to Tampines Rovers on Matchday One, started seeing more of the ball, with three foreign recruits – Wedson Anselme, Emeka Darlington and Landing Darboe -- threatening the opposition defence with some darting runs from midfield.
But Gallardo wrestled back the initiative from the hosts striking from inside the box in the 25th minute. The 28-year-old Spaniard turned on his heel to collect Stephan Schrock's pass, and managed to find the left-hand corner of the net, despite goalkeeper Shahidul Alam getting a hand to the ball.
Gallardo then doubled the lead just four minutes later -- Schrock the provider yet again -- with a clinical finish past the diving Sheikh Jamal goalkeeper to put the visitors firmly into the box seat.
The hosts, however, had two chances late in the opening half to reduce the arrears. Landing saw his strike from 25 yards come off the right-hand post before Ceres goalkeeper Louie Casas produced a brilliant reflex keep to deny keep Landing's header on Wedson's cross off the goalline.
There were few chances in the opening phase of the second half but two opportunities came in quick succession at either end with 15 minutes to play.
Casas was in inspired form to thwarted Wedson's pointblank attempt while, at the other end, Bienvenido Maranon saw his attempt half-blocked by the Sheikh Jamal goalkeeper before it came off the right-hand post.
The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute, with centre-back Yeasin Khan picking up his second yellow card, but the visitors could not increase the lead any further.* the-afc.com

Ceres – La Salle FC ready to face Bangladesh in AFC Cup qualifier

The Ceres – La Salle FC left for Bangladesh yesterday for their away game tomorrow in the AFC Cup Group E Qualifier against the Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi squad at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
The match is scheduled at 6 p.m., Philippine time.
Before heading for Bangladesh, Ceres technical director Ali Go said the match against the home team will not be an easy one and they need to play their best to win.
Although Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi lost to Singapore's Tampines Rovers, 0-4, in their away game on Feb. 23 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore, Go said the team has very good players.
“Its not gonna be an easy game. They lost to Tampines 4-0 but i think they just made key mistakes. I scouted their team they have at least five to six good players who can really play. The foreign players are very good. We have to play our best to win that game.” said Go through the Ceres FC website.
Against Global in the UFL Thursday, Go said they rested some of their players to make sure that they will be fit for the match in Bangladesh.
He hopes that after the 9-hour flight from the Philippines to Bangladesh, with a stopover in Malaysia, the Ceres players will be able to recover and play one hundred percent.
Singapore leads the Group E qualifier with four points after beating Bangladesh while Ceres and Selangor FA of Malaysia has one point each after the 2-2 draw at the Panaad Stadium on Feb. 23.
Against the Selangor FA, Ceres started with Son Young Chan, Kevin Ingreso, Carli de Murga, and Kim Sang Min as defenders, while Manny Ott, Martin Steuble, Patrick Reichelt, manned the midfield.
Stephan Shrock and Adrian Gallardo, who scored Ceres' two goals, were joined by Bienve Marañon in the forward position, while Michael Casas was the keeper.*NAB

In Kuala Lumpur: Ceres FC draws Group E

By Jerome Galunan Jr.

Bacolod City-based and reigning 2015 United Football League (UFL) Division 1 champion Ceres-La Salle FC joined Group E after yesterday’s official draw for the 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC), held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Ceres FC joined Singapore’s Tampines Rovers, Malaysia’s Selangor, and Bangladesh’s Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi.

The Tampines side has impressive records winning major trophies in Singapore football, including the Singapore Cup and the S. League.

The Singaporean squad has also won the national league championship seven times; thrice in the Singapore Cup; 5 times in the S. League; and once in the ASEAN Club Championship.
The Malaysian Selangor FA is also considered the most successful club in Malaysia. It has won a record 32 Malaysia Cups, 7 Malaysia Super League titles, 2 Malaysia Premier League titles, 7 Malaysia FAM League titles, 5 FA Cups, 8 Charity Cups, 4 Malaysia President Cups, 2 Malaysia Youth League titles, and an Agong’s Cup crown.
Meanwhile, the Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi has scored 3 titles in the Bangladesh Premier League, 3 in Bangladesh Federation Cup, and one each in the Nepal Budha Subba Gold Cup, Nepal Pokhara Cup, and Bhutan Kings Cup.
For Ceres FC mentor and director Ali Rojas Go, however, he thinks it’s a good draw for the club. “We have a big chance against the Singapore, Malaysia and Bangladesh sides. If we are 100% ready, we can beat these teams. Preparation will be the key to progress to the next stage,” he said.
On the other hand, fellow Philippine side Kaya joined Hongkong’s Kitchee, Singapore’s Balestier Khalsa, and Maldives’ New Radiant in Group F./
