Hanoi: Undaunted by Vietnam’s 2-1 win in the first leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinal, Philippines defender Carli De Murga believes the Azkals’ team spirit will be key for the visitors as they try to replicate the “Miracle in Hanoi” eight years ago in a bigger stage in the competition.
Failing to capitalize on their home advantage last Sunday at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City, the Azkals are left with an uphill climb to overturn the hosts’ advantage in front of an expected crowd of 40,000 at My Dinh Stadium.
De Murga knows that a finals appearance for the Azkals in the tournament will not only be historic but also trigger another wave of support for the team much like when the 2010 squad stunned Vietnam, 2-0, in the group stage.
“It (this match) means a lot because we’ve never been to the final and we really want to be there,” said the Ceres-Negros player.
"We know that, in the first game, we didn’t play our best and they were better that's why they won. But we’re full of confidence to make a great game and get a good result for us to play in the final for the very first time."
The Azkals’ defense looked sloppy and a stepped slower dealing with Vietnam’s strikers, particularly Nguyen Anh Duc and Phan Van Duc, who scored in each half to give the Golden Stars the advantage.
But De Murga said they’ve worked doubly hard to address those concerns heading into the second leg, where they are hard-pressed to keep a clean sheet.
"Sometimes, you don’t play your best game but we’re working on the field, we’re working with the coaches and my teammates,” said De Murga. "Everyone is focused. We know what we did wrong and we know how to do it tomorrow."
While Vietnam had the luxury of taking a chartered flight back to Hanoi, the Philippines took 17 hours to reach the Vietnamese capital. But De Murga was quick to shrug off the Azkals’ travel woes, saying everyone is eager to play the match.
"Now you can see everyone is eager to play this game,” said De Murga. “We want to win this game and play in the finals for the first time. One of the best scenarios is to do it here. We did it one time and why not the second time.”
Asked what's the Azkals’ advantage against Vietnam, De Murga was quick to reply: "The quality of our team spirit. We have a great team spirit and we’re going to show it tomorrow."

ReplyDeleteWRONG!!!
The only advantage Azkals have is their size.
So they will park the bus and wait to score when their opponents lapse in concentration.
Even Eriksson is playing the same tactics.
The only coach that does not was Dooley and he was removed by beloved Palami.
Do you want some tissue bro?
DeleteThey should have interviewed you instead.
DeleteDe Murga is on a Beast mode!
DeleteDun need tissue cause nvr subscribe to fatlami idealogy
DeleteAzkals crumbling
DeleteAzkals players had never met each other until they were found and picked up by PFF. Different backgrounds, different languages, different culture, and let's face it, they all have their first nationalities which they would have loved to play for if only they were good enough.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Vietnamese players are all local, grew up playing together, teamed up for U19, U23 together and fought with Asian top sides to achieve respectable results. They're like real family and they whole-heartedly play for their one and only nation, and of course they are overwhelmingly loved by their people.
And now De Murga says Azkals have better team spirit. What a satirical joke.
Why dont we all send Ilonggos. All from Barotac Nuevo. Speak the same dialect. Went to the same parish. Same school. Hit on the same girl even. Lets see how far they get. What a joke.
DeleteSend the Armed Forces instead, because they are love by the people?
DeleteAmani choked there. Silva also let him down by not marking his man.
ReplyDeleteThen Amani and Tull combined for the 2nd blunder.
It's just poor stamina. Vietnam coach knew that and waited for 80 min to play Cong Phoung whose speed and skill can rape exhausted defense. Azkals should have done something before that.
DeleteThe first goal resulted in Amani becoming static. The attacker recognized this and zipped to his left side. Amani should always be moving, if you become static you will be unable to react if the attacker changes direction.
DeleteThen Silva let him down as he was caught ball watching. The attacker on the flank is not his problem. His problem is the guy in middle waiting for the low cross!
Such a shame for the defense was pretty tight early even though there were some weak clearances. It all just fell apart in the 83rd minute.
Deyto played well by the way. Kudos to him. There was nothing he could do with the Vietnam goals. He should be more assertive in the future, he should yell at his defenders for making mistakes. That is how you organize the backline.

DeleteDeyto is having trouble speaking spanish:)
He should have no trouble speaking English.
DeleteNguyen Choke Amani, Man of the Match!!!
Open your eyes to the truth
ReplyDelete2nd goal kasalanan ni deyto. wala sa position. hindi niya cover yung first post
ReplyDeletewelcome to toothless azkals offence era. i want my dooley back.
ReplyDeleteOnce coach Sven gets his hands on guys like these: Gerrit Holtman, Javier Patiño, Mark Hartmann, Raphael Obermair, Joe Champness, Jesse Curran.. The toothless Azkals will definitely turn into Vlad Drăculea instantly..With Dooley back, it will only cause early retirements to Fil-Foreign players like Schrock, de Murga & all those who dont like him running the show. His favorites instead, will have much playing time like the Deyto, Aguinaldo, Misagh, Kenshiro, Jeffrey Christiaens, etc. There have been a number of premature retirements during the Dooley Era, it goes to show that Dooley is despotic. From Fil-Foreign players Stephan Schröck, Dennis Cagara, Jason de Jong, Chris Greatwich, Ángel Guirado, Ray Jónsson to local based players Chieffy Caligdong, Ed Sacapaño, Ian Araneta, Aly Borromeo, Ruben Doctora, Anton del Rosario etc, all have less exposure or annoyed into retiring early. Etheridge also was left alone during his down years, & the injury ridden Phil was use ineffectively by being place deeper during the Dooley Era.. Dooley's true downfall was his zero impact on recruiting European based players, the Azkals desperately need a new tooth to replace aging stars. If you cant find one locally, you gotta look elsewhere & with coach Sven's stature, reputation, ability & achievements, it generates interest to a number of high profiled fil-foreign booters, & some of them have been doing those inquiries about how to Play for our Nat'l team..
DeleteNice justification to say dooley is crap cause he cannot recruit fil foreign.
Deletehe is a football coach not football scout.
Beside most of this players dun have citizenship to begin with for him to call them up.
