MANILA, Philippines - Ceres-La Salle FC came into Saturday's game with Socceroo needing just a draw to clinch the United Football League title.
But the Bacolod-based club did one better, punctuating a successful campaign with a 6-0 domination of Socceroo on July 25 at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The scoring began ignominiously for Socceroo as an own goal by Arnel Casil at 41’ started the downhill trend for the Manila-based team. Nate Burkey ended the first half with his first goal, then kicked off the second with another at 49’ to achieve a brace.
The bleeding didn’t let up as Orman Okunaiya (60’), Marwin Angeles (74’) and Jeffrey Christiaens (84’) kicked in goals of their own to arrive at the final score.
The win gives Ceres 13 wins against one loss and one draw for 40 points in the 2015 League, while Soccerroo drops to 1-14-1 in League play. The closest runner-up, last year's champions Global FC, are 8-2-4 for 28 points.
The title win earns Ceres FC entry to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup, where they will play against top club teams from around the region.
