Coach Dooley hopes Azkals learn from champion Germany's attractive, efficient football

PHILIPPINE men’s football team coach Thomas Dooley hopes the Azkals will learn from Germany’s run to the title in the Fifa World Cup in Brazil. The Germans showed how the beautiful game should be played in the sport’s showpiece event, where they stamped their class by brandishing an attractive style of play without compromising efficiency in scoring. Germany capped the dominating run with a 1-0 nipping of Argentina in the final thanks to an extra time winner by super sub Mario Goetze to win a fourth World Cup crown. “That’s what Germany does over and over again — they play organized, disciplined. That’s what we need to do,” the German-American mentor, who played 15 years in the Bundesliga, said on Monday after the viewing party of the World Cup final at Discovery Suites. Germany’s domination was in full display in the clinical 7-1 dismantling of the host squad in the semifinal, one of the country’s six victories in seven games. Ghana, one of the lowest-ranked sides in the World Cup, was the only country to force Germany to drop points after both squads fought to a 2-2 draw in the group stage. Except for that small hiccup, the Germans’ World Cup campaign seemed flawless as they leaned on a relatively less heralded squad compared to their rivals. “They’re successful with not the best players,” Dooley said of the side led by Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Mulller, and Golden Glove winner Manuel Neuer. “You can have the best players, but can’t be successful.” And the 52-year-old Azkals mentor, who lived in Germany for more than three decades, hopes to take a leaf off Joachim Loew’s play book. “Obviously I would like to copy something that I (learned) that is successful and want to bring it in with my ideas, my style,” said the former US World Cup skipper, who steers the Azkals in the Philippine Peace Cup in September and the AFF Suzuki Cup in November.
