BANGKOK, Thailand – Over the years, the Myanmar national football team has daunted the Philippines every time they faced each other in regional competition.
But this time around, Myanmar assistant coach Tin Myint Aung knows it will now be different when they face the Azkals on Friday in the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup here.
“Our team used to beat the Philippines for so many times,” he said. “But for the last two years, they have a lot of improvement.”
The Filipinos have not beaten the Burmese side ever, only coming up with draws in their last three matches. The Burmese also hammered the Azkals’ Under-23 side, with Weiss at the helm, in a 5-0 triumph in the Southeast Asian Games last year.
However, the situation is not the same in this year’s Suzuki Cup, with the Burmese trailing the Azkals in the group standings with only a point to show. Now in the brink of elimination, Tin knows Myanmar will face a tall order when they battle the Azkals.
“It will be very difficult to play the Philippine team,” he said.
Myanmar star striker Kyi Lin, however, is confident that they can topple the Azkals and still sneak to the next round.
“We believe that we can win and we can fight in the last match to qualify for the semifinals,” he said.
