Philippine FF receives League Development Award

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has been awarded the League Development Award for the creation of its new league - the Philippines Football League (PFL) - and its extensive work on league governance.

Successor to the former top-tier football league in the Philippines, the PFL celebrated its inaugural season in 2017, with Ceres Negros clinching the title.

PFF President Mariano V. Araneta Jr. was presented with the award by AFC Development Committee Chairman Zhang Jian after the 28th AFC Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“This is an award that will inspire us to improve our league, and our clubs to do better. We hope that the PFL continues for many years to come,” said the PFF President.

He added: “During the last two years, the attendances have improved, and in the next season, two more clubs will be joining the PFL, which means we are back to maximum strength.

“We also have a new marketing group that will be assisting us, and they will also take care of the commercial aspects of the league, so we are expecting a better performance next season.

“With the support from AFC, we are delighted that the league has improved the quality of our players. As the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 draws closer, our players will play better because of the league.’

PFF is the second Member Association to be presented with the League Development Award, with the United Arab Emirates Football Association receiving the award in February for its unique project on media training designed for professional players.

Kaya FC nails 2019 AFC Cup berth in extra time effort

MANILA, Philippines – Kaya FC emerged as the inaugural Copa Paulino Alcantara champion over Davao Aguilas FC, 1-0 (AET), on Saturday, October 27 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium for a sure spot in the 2019 AFC Cup.

Jovin Bedic ended the sloppy game at the last minute of extra time (119') after firing the cross of Robert Mendy into the back of the net.

“What a final,” exclaimed Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida.

“What makes it special for this [final] – aside from we wanted to go to back AFC – is we were able to give honor to the legendary Paulino Alcantara [who] is from Concepcion, Iloilo and as [the] representative of Iloilo, this Cup really matters for us.”

Davao Aguilas FC will only advance to the regional cup tournament if Ceres-Negros FC qualifies for the 2019 AFC Champions League.

Kaya dominated the first half as Miguel Tanton took a free kick in the 32nd minute, only to have Patrick Deyto punch it out for the save. Five minutes later, the Kaya lifer paved the way for Marvin Angeles' free kick to reach Mendy for the header but it was caught offside.

Davao Aguilas had an aggressive start to the second half as Kim Sungmin had two consecutive chances in the 49th minute. His first header went straight into Kaya keeper Ace Villaneuva's hands while he missed Matthew Hartmann's cross in the second sequence.

In the 53rd minute, Kim opened up James Younghusband at the near post, but the midfielder made contact with the ball at an awkward position that wasted the fine opportunity.

The Iloilo-based squad finally got its first chance in the second half when Connor Tacagni took a shot at an open goal but it sailed just wide (60').

In the 79th minute, Jalsor Soriano almost opened the floodgates after taking a long shot that hit the crossbar. Four minutes later, Mendy created a great chance for himself after dribbling past two defenders but succumbed to the pressure with a wide shot.

During added time, Davao looked to end the drought once and for all by opening up Daniel Gadia in the box but his shot sailed over the bar.

In the 98th minute, Davao's Wesley Dos Santos picked up his second yellow after a challenge on Tacagni and was sent off the pitch.

Davao Aguilas committed another blunder a minute later that conceded a free kick, but Tanton's shot hit the woodwork in his attempt to target the top corner. – Rappler.com

Sven-Goran Eriksson Named Philippines MNT Head Coach

Sven-Goran Eriksson has been appointed as head coach of the Philippine Men’s National Team in time for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 and the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018.

An experienced coach, Eriksson led the England National Football Team to two consecutive FIFA World Cups in 2002 and 2006 both finishing as quarterfinalists

The Swedish coach also had coaching stints in Sweden, Portugal, Italy, England, Mexico, and most recently in China to add to his glittering coaching career. 

“We thank Mr. Eriksson for accepting the position of Philippine Men’s National Team head coach for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup and AFF Suzuki Cup campaign,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta Jr. “His vast experience as head coach will motivate the team as the Philippines compete for regional supremacy and Asian pride.”

Eriksson will begin his preparations for the both the Asian Cup and Suzuki Cup soon. Scott Cooper, who served as interim head coach, is named as the team’s Senior Football Advisor.

The Swedish coach’s first match will be on 13 November 2018 in the opening match of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 against Singapore at the Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

Azkals hire former England manager Eriksson

Boosting its braintrust in anticipation for two important tournaments in the coming months, the Philippines has hired Swedish coach Sven Goran Eriksson, who managed European powerhouse England in the 2006 World Cup.

Azkals manager Dan Palami told the Inquirer that Eriksson, 70, has agreed to terms for an initial six-month engagement with room for an extension, which means the veteran coach will be handling the Azkals in the AFF Suzuki Cup in November and the AFC Asian Cup in January.

Irish coach Scott Cooper, who handled the team in the last two matches, will remain with the Azkals, joining forces with Eriksson, whom he worked with during their time at Leicester City from 2010 to 2011.

Azkals, Oman share spoils in Qatar

The Philippines recorded a huge result in the Middle East, forcing Oman to share the spoils in a 1-1 friendly draw Saturday evening in Doha's Thani Bin Jassim Stadium (Sunday morning, Manila time).

Scott Cooper's Azkals defied all expectations to get a second result against a side that is in the Top 100 in the FIFA rankings, with their defence the key to get the draw against the reigning Gulf Cup champions.

Their resolve was put to the test early into the match, as the Philippines fell behind on a Raed Saleh strike in the 8th minute, pouncing on a botched clearance by Neil Etheridge from an Omani corner.

With six minutes before half-time, the Azkals equalized as Manny Ott's free kick was headed inadvertently by Khaled Al Hajiri into his own net, reversing what could have been Javier Patiño seventh international goal.

The second half saw the Azkals hold their fort at the defensive end, with substitute goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard recording two huge saves, to record a fantastic result against Pim Verbeek's side.

Apart from that, it also saw the debut of John-Patrick Strauss of Erzgebirge Aue, replacing Martin Steuble at the holding midfield role in the 67th minute, as they end the international break with a positive outlook ahead of their AFF Championship campaign next month.

AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 Kicks-Off Next Month; Pana-Ad Stadium To Host Group Stage Matches

With only a month before the Philippines begin their campaign for regional supremacy, expectations are on a high with 4 quality and exciting matches to be played in a bid to claim the title of ASEAN champions.

Sporting a new tournament format, the AFF Suzuki Cup will bring thrilling football to all fans with the Philippines hosting two home matches in the group stages.

The Philippine Men’s National Team path will be a tough one however as it will face familiar foes Singapore, Timor Leste, Thailand, and Indonesia in Group B. With the exception of Timor Leste, the Philippines will face the same teams it had faced in 2016 when Manila hosted the group stages.

The Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium in Bacolod, Negros Occidental will host the Philippines against Singapore on 13 November and Thailand on 21 November 2018. This will be the first time that the Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium will host the Suzuki Cup final round after hosting the ASEAN Football Championship Qualifiers back in 2006.

“The AFF Suzuki Cup makes its return to the Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium in Bacolod City,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta Jr. “It (the AFF Suzuki Cup) holds a special place to all Philippine football fans. We invite all football stakeholders and more importantly, the fans to support the Men’s National Team in their home matches.”

The away match against Timor Leste will be held on 17 November 2018 at the Kuala Lumpur Stadium in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia while the match against Indonesia will be held on 25 November 2018 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Currently, the team is preparing for the tournament. The team recently participated in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament 2018 where the Philippines finished as semifinalists. A FIFA International Friendly Match against Oman is set on 13 October 2018, 6:30 PM local time (11:30 PM Manila time) at the Al Gharafa Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.

PFF, thanks for everything 🤔... jumping through hoops to get from city to city, 24 hours of transit instead coulda been 7, lack of support from your organization, making us pay our way for visas, not reimbursing flights some players paid for, having Maja Año a long time employee disrespect saying "Whatever Anton, you shouldn't have gone on the trip.", calling us the B team, calling us up a couple days before knowing we'd have to drop everything, promising opportunity to players but not even sending the coach to see them, the list could go on...

Why I say thank you is because it only made the character of the team stronger. You guys put us through hell but we still stood side by side for each other playing our heart out for flag and country men.

The "B team" reminded me of the old Azkal days when nothing in return was expected but at the same time giving their all. Our coach flew in the day of the 1st game with 4 players, and after almost 24 hours of traveling they played and won! This is what it's about, all pride, no complaints.

It was amazing that players did not complain about each other or management. We were a team. I almost left the camp because I have so much to do back home but it was bc of these guys that kept me around. I do not regret the choice at all. We were all there for each other and focused on one goal, represent the country to the best of our ability.

A lot of the guys will have many more opportunities to wear the Jersey but if the PFF staff can't understand the importance of wearing the Jersey how are we supposed to excel to our fullest. The sooner all of them understand that this Jersey is not just any Jersey and that we represent more than each other the team and the flag, that we are chosen amongst MILLIONS of people and put our lives on the line for them, maybe then we will see PFF change.

Philippines Face Oman in Qatar

The Philippine Men’s National Team’s preparation for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 and the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 continues this October with a FIFA International Friendly Match with Oman on Saturday 13 October 2018 in Doha, Qatar.
This will be the first time in 17 years that the Philippines, ranked 114th in the FIFA Rankings, will face Oman, ranked 85th in the FIFA Rankings. The previous meeting between the two teams was during the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea-Japan Qualifiers in May 2001, the Philippines lost both matches 0-2 and 0-7 respectively.
Both teams will also participate in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 next year. The Philippines is in Group C while Oman is in Group F.
Forward Javier Patiño, defenders Stephan Palla, goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard, and midfielders Kevin Ingreso, Iain Ramsay, Dennis Villanueva, and James Younghusband all make their return to the squad after missing the friendly against Bahrain last month.
Defender Martin Steuble is also included in the squad. The Ceres Negros FC captain was last called up in the friendly match against Malaysia in March 2017.

Azkals fall to Tajikistan, bow out of 2018 Bangabandhu Cup

MANILA, Philippines – After sweeping the group stage, the Philippine Azkals fail to make it to the 2018 Bangabandhu Cup finals as they suffer a 0-2 defeat to Tajikistan on Tuesday, October 9, at the Cox's Bazar Stadium in Bangladesh.

The Nationals capped off their campaign with a semifinals loss that booted them out of the cup tourney. They previously won againstLaos and host team Bangladesh in Group B.

As the Tajiks dominated the possession, Komron Tursonov was left open to deliver a goal off an assist from Muxammadzoni Raximov in the 32nd minute.

Tajikistan's Axtam Nazarov also managed to score in added time (90+6') that proved to be the dagger in clinching a finals berth.

Before absorbing Tajikistan's opening goal, Azkals keeper Louie Casas kept the team's defense afloat by making four crucial saves.

The Philippines managed to build up on its offense after conceding the opening goal as Kenshiro Daniels' header off a cross from Hikaru Minegishi sailed just wide in the 33rd minute. The Filipino-Japanese was also able to get a hold of the ball but his shot went off-target.

In the 66th minute, Casas was accidentally kneed by Raximov which caused an eight-minute stoppage in the play in order to receive treatment for his bloody gash.

The Filipino keeper returned to play with a headband on and still continued to impress as he saved a free kick that was awarded to Tajikistan from Ian Clarino's yellow card in the 81st minute.

As the Philippine side started winning possession towards the end of the second half, Azkals rookie Jarvey Gayoso attempted to equalize in the 86th minute but his efforts were too strong. – Rappler.com

PFF issues check to cover unliquidated accounts

The Philippine Football Federation issued a check worth P4,882,602.71 on Sept. 14 to cover all its unliquidated accounts with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) dating back to 1996.

The development comes on the heels of the PSC tightening the noose on national sports associations (NSAs) with pending unliquidated financial assistance after accounting of such has pegged the amount to as much as P100 million.

The PFF thus joins the NSAs of athletics, shooting, sailing and cycling as federations that have cleared their delinquent accounts. The PFF’s unliquidated assistance, however, was something the current administration inherited.

“That amount is from past administrations of PFF from 1996 to 2010,” said PFF secretary general Edwin Gastanes.

Last year, the PSC announced that “NSAs with outstanding obligations and/or unliquidated accounts shall receive no funding, effective Nov. 1, 2017.”
