"STILL I AM IN SHOCK"

by Kevin Estrada

MANILA-- The Azkals reflect on their come from behind win against North Korea to cap off Round 2 of the Joint World Cup-Asian Cup qualifiers late Tuesday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Departing center-back Juani Guirado said that he was still in shock about the 3-2 win that eliminated the visitors from World Cup qualifiying contention on his final match for the Philippines, as he admitted that dreaming of a fitting end to his international career which turned to be true.

"We've finished winning a tough game, giving everything," the Ceres skipper said, thanking also everyone who went to witness history unfolding.

"Today we show we can win against one of the best teams in Asia," Guirado quoted, as he also referred to their opponents who went to the World Cup twice.

Described as excellent by Thomas Dooley in the post-match press conference, debutant Miguel Tanton said that he doesn't think being surprised about being selected in his first cap with the Azkals as he returns to duty for Kaya the following day as they prepare for their UFL Cup defense against archrivals Loyola on Saturday.

"Now, I guess it's time to reflect, but far it has been a nice ride," added the right winger who gave a backheel to Manny Ott for the equalizer in the match.

"I love those guys [SOMK], I think they are my agents", referring to the supporters who pushed for his inclusion to the squad which was long overdue due to his performances for Kaya in the AFC Cup. in which he also thinks that Jovin Bedic and Woody Ugarte should be given consideration.

Match winner Iain Ramsay, who came on as a half-time substitute, said the team managed to pull the win even though their first encounter last year in Pyongyan ended in a goalless draw.

"We stick together, despite the circumstances", the Tractor Sazi midfielder said, added that Ott's equalizer in the 84th minute gave them the much needed lift for them.

He also hoped that his manager Amir Ghalenoei will give him a chance to show his stuff despite not being selected in the AFC Champions League matches wherein Tractor recently lost to Pahktakor in Tashkent before the international break.

Team manager Dan Palami was more than happy that the Azkals won in that fashion, showing that fighting heart when they came from a goal down to snatch victory at the death

"You are watching the Azkals," the former railway executive said about the comeback.

RUSSIA 2018/UAE 2019 QUALIFIERS: PHILIPPINES 3-2 DPR KOREA

Manila: The Philippines advanced to the third round of qualifying for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup after beating DPR Korea 3-2 in their 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 AFC Asian Cup joint-qualifier at Rizal Memorial Stadium on Tuesday.
The hosts finished their game either in third or fourth spot but a later 1-0 defeat of Bahrain by Uzbekistan in the other match of their group confirmed the Filipinos' third-place finish in the joint-qualifying campaign.
It took the Azkals 43 minutes to open the scoring through Misagh Bahadoran who headed home from close range following a brilliant feed from Javier Patino, but the jubilation did not last long as DPR Korea’s So Kyong-jin equalised two minutes into stoppage time of the first half.
And the Koreans did not waste much time to take over the lead as Ri Hyok-chol scored just three minutes into the second half causing the hosts to push hard for an equaliser.
They finally got it 36 minutes later as an exquisite flick from Miguel Tanton set up Manuel Ott, who drove the ball into the bottom corner.
The Philippines’ substitute Iain Ramsay was then booked by the referee on 90 minutes but that did not stop him from scoring barely a minute later when he found himself in plenty of space to drill the ball into the Koreans’ net and the home crowd went wild to celebrate their 3-2 win over the visitors.
Eight group winners will advance to the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, as well as straight to the 2019 Asian Cup in United Arab Emirates, along with the four best runners-up.
The other four runners-up will progress to the third round of qualifying for the Asian Cup, along with all the third-placed teams and the four best fourth-placed teams.

Blitz goals help Azkals shock North Koreans

By:

Playing with style and substance, the Philippines delivered a performance for the ages to topple a nation that played in the World Cup just six years ago.
Complimenting their hard-nosed, no-nonsense defending with a flair rarely seen on their attack, the Azkals scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to stun North Korea, 3-2, Tuesday night in their Asian Cup and World Cup Qualifying clash at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Iain Ramsay rifled home the winner in the 90th minute after Manny Ott and Misagh Bahadoran found the back of the net, while Neil Etheridge once again sparkled on goal as the Azkals scored their third victory to finish with 10 points in the competition.

“We didn’t want to lose,” said coach Thomas Dooley.
“Not at home and not on Juani’s (Guirado) final game,” said Dooley referring to Guirado’s farewell match after the skipper announced his retirement last Monday.
The Azkals will miss out on the World Cup after a poor run of results, but their fine play in the last two matches should make them a strong contender to reach the 24-nation Asian Cup in 2019. As it stands, the Azkals are third behind Uzbekistan and North Korea in the group. Only the top team is assured of reaching the next round of World Cup Qualifying.
True to their word, the Azkals showed plenty of fight and flair when their backs were against the wall. Going down 1-2 three minutes into the second half, the hosts carved out one chance after another until they were finally rewarded with late strikes from Ott and Ramsay.
Bahadoran opened the scoring with a header from point-blank range in the 43rd minute, pouncing on Javier Patino’s saved effort.
The lead lasted just three minutes as So Kyong-jin’s volley from just inside the box found the bottom corner, beating Etheridge, who had earlier denied So from close-range.
The Azkals heroically defended a set piece in the 48th minute, but North Korea’s persistence paid off as Ri Hyok-chol gave the visitors the lead with a shot at the far post after a save from Etheridge and a goal line clearance from Amani Aguinaldo.
But the Azkals played with confidence on the ball even as the North Koreans took their foot off the pedal. Dooley introduced Ramsay to add speed on the wings, while James Younghusband also returned to the side, replacing Bahadoran.
Ott almost equalized in the 57th minute after a flowing move sent him through on goal. But the Ceres midfielder could only send his effort wide.
Patino proved dangerous for the entire match with his hold-up play and his linkup with Bahadoran and newcomer Miguel Tanton.
In an enthralling sequence, Younghusband won the ball at midfield for Patino who released Tanton. Seeing Ott’s run, Tanton laid it off for the midfielder to fire first time into the bottom corner sending the crowd into delirium.
The Azkals grew in confidence after scoring the equalizer. Patino again was the creator, showing strength to hold up the play and wait for an unmarked Ramsay to arrive inside the box. Composed and clinical, Ramsay smashed the ball home for the winner.
“I like the outcome of the game and the words written on our shirts: We Believe,” said Dooley. “That was the main thing before the game that we can believe in ourselves that we can football against teams at this level.”

Scrappy Azkals ready to rumble vs Nokors tonite

By Olmin Leyba
MANILA, Philippines - A fired-up Philippine Azkals go all out to pull the rug from under fancied North Korea tonight at the close of second-round action in the joint qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 AFC Asian Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Azkals enter the 8 p.m. duel pumped up and determined to dish out a winning performance, drawing confidence from their fighting 0-1 loss to powerhouse Uzbekistan in faraway Tashkent, where they played with 10 men from the 10th minute onwards last Thursday.
“Because of the fight last week against Uzbekistan, I think the players are ready for the game tomorrow (tonight),” said Phl coach Thomas Dooley. “They know what it takes to fight against those big teams above us and from our practices, it looks like the players are focused.”
The Azkals also get confidence boost from the fact they were the only ones in Group H whom the Chollima have never beaten. The first time they faced off over in Pyongyang, the Pinoy booters fought the home side to a scoreless draw.
“In my opinion, this is a game we can win if everybody shows up tomorrow and we’re good enough to play football against them. We have to show that in the beginning so they’ll have a little bit more respect for us. I think anything’s possible,” said Dooley.
Phl XI sits at fourth in the group with seven points behind Uzbekistan’s 18, North Korea’s 16 and Bahrain’s nine.  Although out of the World Cup already, the Azkals can progress to the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers outright by upstaging the two-time World Cup campaigners Chollima.
“It’s an important game for us if we want to go to the next round of the Asian Cup. We also want to end the tournament (second round) with a victory,” said Dooley, whose team welcomes back Misagh Bahadoran and Manny Ott back after the duo served their suspension in the Uzbekistan outing.
The match is equally as important for North Korea, which aims to top the group and advance to the final round of the Asian Cup.

DOOLEY WANTS AZKALS TO BELIEVE THEY CAN BEAT DPR KOREA

After beginning their campaign in impressive form with victories over Bahrain and Yemen, the Azkals have since suffered four defeats and a draw and are currently fourth in Group H.
Bahrain are presently in third place and will advance straight to the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers, with the Philippines running the risk of having to go through the playoffs should they not finish as one of the four best fourth-placed teams.
But with the Bahrainis facing a tricky visit to Group leaders Uzbekistan, the Azkals know that a victory of their own should be enough to see them climb above their competitors.
Although it will not be easy against a DPR Korea outfit also challenging for top spot, Dooley insists his team must believe in themselves, especially after last Thursday’s brave display in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Uzbekistan.
“Because of the fight last week against Uzbekistan, they know how to play against those big teams,” he said, according to Philippine Daily Inquirer.
“They just have to have confidence against North Korea.
“This time, it’s a little bit different; I want to win now, and my opinion is we can win.
“Anything is possible.”
There will also be extra motivation for the Philippines after veteran defender Juan Luis Guirado confirmed in Monday’s pre-match press conference that the game would be his last before retiring from international football.
The 36-year-old, who was born in Spain but qualified to play for the Azkals through his mother, has been a mainstay in the team since 2012 and represented them at two AFC Challenge Cups and AFF (Asean Football Federation) Championships.
“Tomorrow (Tuesday) will be my last game in the national team,” said the Ceres La Salle centre-back.
“I feel myself as still a young person, but my body is not anymore.
“We have a busy schedule with our club and here (with the) Azkals. I have to focus on my team and my family.
“This has been the most beautiful experience of my life as a person and a footballer.”
It appears the Philippines are currently transitioning to a new generation, with Guirado following the likes of Rob Gier, Paul Mulders and Jerry Lucena to have called time on their international careers recently.

Azkals defender Juani Guirado announcing national team retirement

The Philippine national men’s football team saw the departure of another key member after Filipino-Spanish defender Juani Guirado announced his retirement from Azkals duty.
Guirado said that the Azkals’ FIFA World Cup Qualifier match against North Korea on Tuesday will be his last game.
“I made this hard decision a few weeks ago,” Guirado said. “I feel myself still young but my body (is not after) all the international games plus in the club for playing in a very high level.”
Guirado, a member of Ceres-La Salle FC in the United Football League, will be retiring with 34 international caps under his name.
The 36-year-old Guirado suited up four years for the Azkals, joining the team in 2012 a year after his brother, Angel, donned the national team colors.
Guirado made his mark as one of the team’s reliable defenders, with his solid play becoming an anchor of the Azkals backline.
Guirado was the fourth player to retire from the national team this year. Jerry Lucena and Paul Mulders declared earlier this March that they won’t be playing anymore for the Azkals.
The Fil-Danish Lucena and Fil-Dutch Mulders, both 35, represented the Philippines for four years.
Guirado’s partner in the backline, Rob Gier, also 35, announced his retirement last February.

Azkals vow win over North Korea in World Cup, Asian elims

by Olmin Leyba
MANILA, Philippines – After putting up what they considered as a strong showing in a 0-1 away defeat to world No. 74 Uzbekistan, the Philippine Azkals hope to get the job done against their next opponent in the joint Fifa World Cup-AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers – North Korea – which they host at the Rizal Memorial Stadium tomorrow night.
“We want to continue the hard work (from the previous game) against Uzbekistan and use that momentum to get a good result against the No. 2 ranked team in our group (North Korea),” team manager Dan Palami said.
Last Thursday, already saddled with personnel woes due to injuries, suspensions and retirement of key players, the Azkals found themselves further disadvantaged in Tashkent when OJ Porteria was sent off 10 minutes into the match against the White Wolves who were cheered on by 34,000 home fans. With Neil Etheridge making spectacular saves, Phl XI held its ground against Uzbeks’ searing assault most of the way but surrendered the game-winner to Anzur Isamailov.
Uzbekistan leads Group H with 18 points followed by North Korea with 16, Bahrain with nine and Phl with seven.
Misagh Bahadoran and Manny Ott, who served their suspensions in Tashkent, and Roland Muller, who was unavailable last week, have rejoined the Azkals for the duel with the Chollima. James Younghusband has also been called up but his brother Phil will still sit this one out due to injury.
The Azkals had their training at Rizal yesterday, a day after arriving from Tashkent. North Korea, which took a bye in the March 24 fixtures, arrived in Manila Saturday morning and immediately trained there.
“They (North Korea) are coming in fresh. They came ahead of us. But the players are eager to prove to the fans that we will be fighting from start to finish,” said Palami, whose wards previously bravely battled North Korea to a scoreless draw over in Pyongyang.
It was a long flight back to Manila from the Uzbek capital via Incheon but the Azkals had ample rest at the Transit Hotel in Incheon Airport before eventually flying home.
Although out of the 2018 World Cup, Phl is still in the hunt in the 2019 Asian Cup.  A No. 3 standing at the end of group play will ensure the Pinoy booters outright qualification to third round of the Asian Cup.

Dooley eyes contract extension

By:

INCHEON—If he had it his way, coach Thomas Dooley would like to keep his post as Philippine Azkals coach.
The German-American tactician told the Inquirer that his contract with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) will expire after the North Korea game on Tuesday. An extension has yet to be concretely discussed.
“I don’t want to be anywhere else than to work with the guys and be part of something we are building for Philippine football,” said Dooley in a brief chat during the team’s stopover at Incheon International Airport. “But that is not my decision to make.”

Dooley took the Azkals job in February 2014 after impressing manager Dan Palami and PFF general secretary Ed Gastanes in an interview. It was his first national team coaching stint after a storied professional and international career in the German league as well as with the US.
Among the highlights of Dooley’s stint are a runner-up finish in the AFC Challenge Cup and a semifinal appearance in the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2014. Cedelf P. Tupas

Porteria stays positive after red card vs Uzbek

By:

TASHKENT—It was supposed to be OJ Porteria’s opportunity to finally come out of the shadows of his more illustrious teammates.
Instead, the night ended prematurely for the young midfielder, his stint cut short by a harsh red card that marred the Philippine Azkals’ 0-1 defeat to powerhouse Uzbekistan in their World Cup Qualifying clash at Bunyodkor Stadium here.
Porteria who was playing in a position usually assigned to either Stephan Schrock or Phil Younghusband got sent off in the ninth minute for a late challenge on defender Igor Kremits.

“I wasn’t nervous but it happened so fast,” Porteria said of the incident. “Kiki (Patrick Reichelt) played the ball to me and I couldn’t reach the ball. The defender got the ball ahead of me and I caught him. I didn’t think it was a red card.”
Schrock and Younghusband were both sidelined by injuries, and coach Thomas Dooley felt Porteria who is fine form for club Kaya was the logical choice to fill the position.
“Yesterday was unfortunate for me,” said Porteria. “I just have to keep my chin up and be professional about the situation and grab the next chance to prove myself.
Porteria added: “Coach (Thomas Dooley) thought it was also a harsh call. He thought tackles before the one I had may have led the ref to the decision.”
Porteria, who spent most of the game watching from the VIP box, said he was proud of the way his teammates fought with a man disadvantage for the rest of the match.
“The boys played very well despite what happened,” he said. “I’m very proud of the guys especially Neil. Neil was unbelievable, our backline was just diving for balls, doing everything they can but unfortunately, we lost.”
Porteria, who will serve a suspension for the clash against North Korea on Tuesday, said the Azkals can take a lot of positives from their performance here.

RUSSIA 2018/UAE 2019 QUALIFIERS: UZBEKISTAN 1-0 PHILIPPINES

Tashkent: Uzbekistan went top of Group H after a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Philippines in their penultimate match in Preliminary Round 2 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 AFC Asian Cup joint-qualifiers on Thursday lifted the Central Asians above DPR Korea.
Changchun Yatai defender Anzur Islaimov scored the only goal of the match just before the hour-mark in a game that saw the Philippines play the majority of the fixture with with ten men following the 10th minute sending off of Jose Porteria.
Uzbekistan dominated the early exchanges and after Egor Krimets had headed a free-kick over the bar, the Philippines were indebted to Neil Etheridge who held his nerve to deny Igor Sergeev a ninth-minute opener when the Pakhtakor striker - scorer of a brace in the Uzbeks’ 5-1 win over the Azkals in Bocaue City - was clean through on goal with only the Walsall keeper to beat.
Barely a minute later the Philippines were reduced to ten men when Jose Porteria was red-carded for a reckless challenge on Krimets and despite laying siege on the visitors defence for the remainder of the first half Uzbekistan were unable to break the deadlock in the first half thanks to the inspired for of Etheridge, who saved superbly from two-time AFC Player of the Year Server Djeparov, Odil Akhmedov, and Eldor Shomurodov.
China-based centre back Islaimov settled the nerves at the Bunyodkor Stadium when the former Bunyodkor defender headed home a 59th minute cross from Alexander Geynrikh, who came close to doubling the advantage as full time approached only for the 57th-minute substitute to strike the post with four minutes left on the clock.
The victory took Uzbekistan’s points tally to 18, two more than the North Koreans, while the Philippines remain on seven points with one round of Group H matches remaining.
The remaining sides will have to negotiate past two rounds of playoffs for one of the final eight spots in the Asian Cup third qualifying round.

Anything can happen: Azkals shooting for upset in Tashkent

TASHKENT—For a team that thrives on adversity, the Azkals could be facing their sternest test yet.
Banged-up and travel-weary, the Philippine Azkals aim to defy the odds when they square off with Asian powerhouse Uzbekistan Thursday night in their Asian Cup and World Cup Qualifying clash at Bunyodkor Stadium here.
The match kicking off at 9 p.m. in Manila marks the start of a challenging five-day stretch for the Azkals, who are looking to keep third spot in Group H to avoid a playoff for a berth in the third round of Asian Cup Qualifying. The Azkals also face North Korea at Rizal Memorial Stadium on Tuesday.

“These are the games that we live for,” said Azkals coach Thomas Dooley. “If you look at it, we don’t stand a chance, but anything can happen in football.”
Azkals manager Dan Palami believes the Azkals can rise to the challenge in this landlocked capital city that used to be part of the Soviet Union.
“We have a very resilient team,” said Palami. “We can always count on the players to play their best for the country.”
Picking up at least a point here could go a long way for the Azkals hopes of finishing in the Top Three in their group as Bahrain is just behind on goal difference and has a match it is expected to win against Yemen. Finishing fourth could mean the Azkals will drop to a playoff for a place in the third round of Asian Cup Qualifying—a disappointing scenario considering the team started the campaign with two impressive wins before losing three of the next four games.
The Azkals won’t have skipper Phil Younghusband, talisman Stephan Schrock and suspended players Manny Ott and Misagh Bahadoran as well as a slew of veterans who called time to their international careers just last week.
Dooley also noted the 24 hours the Azkals spent going here from Manila which could take a toll on the players during the game.
“Obviously we have some problems in the team, but we’re looking forward to the game tomorrow,” said Azkals coach Thomas Dooley. “The team that we have is the best that we have right now.”
Veteran defender Juani Guirado, who will skipper the side tomorrow, said there should be no recourse for the Azkals but to fight in every play for 90 minutes.
“The mentality of the team is strong even though some of our other teammates are not here,” said the 36-year-old Guirado. “Every player on this team is ready to fight.”
The Uzbeks hammered out a 5-1 victory over the Azkals in their previous meeting in Bulacan last September, but coach Uzbekistan coach Samvel Babayan said his side will be foolish to think that the result could easily be replicated here.
“It will be a difficult game and we re spect the Philippines,” said Babayan, whose team can all but seal its place in the next round of World Cup Qualifying with a victory. “Our target is to put in a performance, show our strengths and quality and probably the win will come.”
Dooley hinted at reverting to a more balanced 4-2-3-1 formation for the clash, with Javier Patino expected to lead the line and Martin Steuble teaming up with Luke Woodland at midfield. OJ Porteria could get his first start in the competition in the position where Younghusband and Schrock used to play—behind the main striker. Young defenders Amani Aguinaldo and Daisuke Sato are both nursing minor injuries, but Dooley said the duo will be fit to play.
The Azkals are also pinning their hopes on Neil Etheridge who hopes to carry his fine form at club level to international play.
“It’s one of those games where you need your defense and the goalkeeper to be at their ultimate best,” said Azkals’ Swiss goalkeeping coach Pascal Zuberbuhler.
