Cebu Football - Doraemon firms up hold of lead in Nat’l Interclub Football

Men's open division leader Doraemon solidified its hold of the top spot with three wins after edging University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR), 2-1, yesterday in the ongoing 10th National Interclub Football Cup at the University of San Carlos Technological Center (USC-TC).

Doraemon's Joshua Fegidero showed the stuff of an ex-RP Team member by breaking through USJR's defense and scoring just 20 seconds into the game.

The Josenians tied the score at 1-all from Adrian Mejaran’s goal in the 54th minute.

However, Doraemon sneaked another goal in the dying minutes of the match to hand USJR its first loss of the tournament. USJR hopes to bounce back today against Queen City United (QCU), which is currently in 2nd spot.

In the other men's open match, FCIC posted a 4-2 victory over USC whose defender Patrick Uno suffered a broken nose when he collided with team goalie Clarence Su.

USC's two goals were all by Prince Antony in the 50th and 52nd-minute mark.

Antony was part of the Central Visayas secondary football team which brought home a silver medal in the recentl 53rd Palarong Pambansa in Tarlac.

FCIC will face Doraemon in their final elimination match today while USC bowed out of the competition like Count FC.

PFF puts CAFC in charge of U14 team

By Edri K. Aznar

INSTEAD of handing the Cebu Football Association (CFA) the duty of handling the training camp of the RP National Boys Under-14 squad, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has given the responsibility to the Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC).

Usually the PFF gives the assignment of supervising training camps to CFA FA, the sport’s local governing body, but PPF chose CAFC because of the club’s capability to finance it.

“CAFC has the capability to sponsor the training camp. PFF talked to us, they were the one who came to us,” former CAFC president and RP National Boys Under-14 assistant manager Raffy Musni said in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

The club, with the help of Don Bosco Liloan rector Fr. Jhun Paradiang, is paying for all the expenses of the RP National Boys Under-14 team.

The training camp started last April 18 at the Don Bosco Liloan campus, wherein all the best Under-14 football players from around the country are currently encamped.

The RP National Boys Under-14 squad is undergoing rigid training under the watchful eyes of head coach Oliver Colina and assistant coaches Dennis Peñalosa and Allan Medalla, who are both from CAFC.

Iloilo, Manila take U19, U14 women's football crowns

By Henry C. Villalva

TRADITIONAL power Iloilo and powerhouse Manila took home the Under19 and Under14 women's football crowns, respectively, last Wednesday at the end of five-day hostilities in the 2010 National Women's Football Selections Tournament.

The event was held at the Panaad pitch of the Panaad Sports and Recreational Park in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

The Manila booters took the champion's trophy in the U14 division followed by host Negros Occidental/All Asia Countertrade, which settled for first runner-up honors while Davao took home the second runner-up trophy.

The host Negrenses had to endure a little frustration as host Negros Occidental Team "A" O Hotel settled for first runner-up honors behind eventual champion Iloilo, losing via goal difference, 1-0, after Negros Occidental "B" Danjugan Sanctuary bowed to eventual champion Iloilo, 10-0, while Negros Occidental Team "A"/O Hotel escaped a hard-fighting Davao side, 3-1, during the ultimate day of hostilities of this event hosted by the Executive Village Football Club headed by businessman Rafael Lizares and staged in cooperation with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) represented here by general secretary Cyril Dofitas, among others.

Cebu Football - Squandered chance

By Mike Limpag

AN erratic Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC) conceded a late goal for a 1-1 draw with FC Inter Cebu (FCIC) in Day 5 of the CAFC 10th Interclub Invitational Tournament at the University of San Carlos (USC).

CAFC got the no.1 spot with eight points from four matches, while idle Doraemon is second with seven. FCIC is third with five, while USJ-R, which was to play Count FC yesterday, is fourth with four points.

The FCIC vs. CAFC draw has revived the slim hopes of USC, which is fifth with three points, of making the semifinals.

First, it has to beat FCIC today to vault to the top four with six points and hope Doraemon beats FCIC on Friday.

Yesterday, CAFC could have been up 4-0 as early as the 16th minute if not for its erratic finishing.

Arnie Pasinabo had three clear chances—twice with the keeper off balanced. But two of his shots were cleared by a defender, while a third went straight to the keeper.
Rommel Cuizon joined the act and had his shot deflected in the 16th.

Then things turned weird for CAFC.

Rene Menchavez stormed off the field and was yellow carded and midfielder Julius Acre also tried to walk off and asked to be subbed before cooler heads convinced the two to keep playing.

Menchavez made amends in the 34th with a perfectly-taken free kick for 1-0.

However, Toto Gempesaw managed to even the count just five minutes from time.

In the U17 matches, a momentary lapse cost the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) dearly as it lost to Sta. Rita, 3-2, while Don Bosco College (DBC) showed no mercy to Danao FC, 15-0.

DBC now leads its group with six points, while Abellana National School is second. In the other group, SHS-J, Sta. Rita and Springdale all have three points and are separated only by goal difference.

Delbert Tan put SHS-J on top in the seventh before Nelson Ybañez leveled the count in the 16th.

SHS-J got got the lead back in the 60th but conceded two goals in the last two minutes. Romar Canoay scored from a free kick while John Shade Panisan scored a minute later for Sta. Rita’s comeback win.

SOS wonder lifts Davao

By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

A FOOTBALL wonder from the SOS Children's Village provided the spark as Davao City registered its second win in the U-19 division of the National Women's Selection Tournament Tuesday night at Panaad Park and Sports Stadium in Bacolod City.

Gloria Rama, one of the young stars of the SOS football team, scored two goals for Davao in a 5-0 thrashing of Negros Occidental B in a match that was decided early.

Marie Magolot and Cherry Vilchez, who each had a goal in Davao's 3-0 victory over Negros Oriental Sunday, added a goal apiece this time and Rozianne Rivera also joined the scoring parade.

Magdolot opened scoring in the 21st minute, before Vilchez and Rama found in the net in the 26th and 38th minutes for a 3-0 Davao lead at halftime.
Rivera scored nine minutes into the second half and Rama knocked in the match's final goal in the 73rd to send it beyond recall.

Iloilo, meanwhile, hacked out a rousing 4-0 win over Negros Oriental in the meet sanctioned by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).

Iloilo was still playing Negros Occidental B as of press time while Davao was set to collide with Negros Occidental A last night.

The Davao squad, coached by Leonor "Wowie" Satorre and Reynalyn Ravanes, had lost to Iloilo, 0-1, in the opener of the single round robin format tournament sponsored by the Executive Village Football Club through club president Rafael Lizares.

Negros Occidental A and Iloilo each toted a two-win, one-draw and zero-loss record to share the lead in the team standings. Davao is in third with a 2-0-1 slate, followed by Negros Oriental (1-0-3) and Negros Occidental B (0-0-3).

Davao's U-19 team is also bannered by Alyssa Marie Ang, June Mae Bunac, Marie Angeline Cadayona, Shienna April Chavez, Erika Jean de Lima, Natasha Anne Doromal, Celina Simone Jaldon, Marice Magdolot, Kim Noreen Maligad, Anna Alexandria Santos, Jenny Elvie Tevar, Erika Lorraine Turtur, Cherry Mae Vilorez, Mary Jane Zamora and Rona Zulueta with Maria Teresa Ang as team manager.

Davao's U-14 team, meanwhile, lost to Manila anew. Manila defeated Davao, 2-0, in the first period, forced a 0-0 standoff in the second period and another draw at 0-all in the third.

Davao was playing Negros Occidental for its last game in the double round elimination format division as of presstime. Manila led the current team standings with 11 points while Negros Occidental is in second with six points.

Cebu Football - USJ-R steals show from USC

By Mike Limpag

MARK Mejaran capped a stirring comeback as the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) surprised a complacent University of San Carlos (USC), 3-2, for their first win in the Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC) 10th National Interclub at the USC field yesterday.

USJ-R is now fourth with four points, while USC dropped to fifth with three points and lost its second straight game when it had the lead.

Doraemon zoomed to the top on goal difference with a 14-0 rout of Count FC, while idle CAFC dropped to second. Doraemon and CAFC both have seven points but the new no. 1 leads by three goals.

FC Intercebu, which routed Count FC last Monday, 8-2, is third with four points.

Yesterday, USC seemed headed for the third spot after getting ahead, 2-0, in the first half.

Free kick

Just 12 minutes in, Karl Arcenas volleyed in Kyle Soriano’s free kick for the first goal before Philip Kenei scored off a goal mouth scramble in the 42nd for a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, things turned around and USC, playing as if a two-goal lead was safe, lost the advantage in just 13 minutes.

Juvan Torres’s free kick deflected off the wall straight past Paolo Pascual in the 54th minute, while Robert Mamac’s bicycle in front of the goal put the team on level terms in the 58th.

USJ-R wasn’t finished.

USC’s defense was in shambles and it only had Bernard Rotich up front for offense. Rotich was so fast he had the defense in trouble keeping up.

His teammates, too, were too slow to catch up with him, while on the other end of the pitch, USJ-R had at least four attackers keeping the defense and Pascual busy.

Things got worse for USC in the 74th after referee Kurt Acre sent off Folk Hanes Anthony for an elbow, leaving an opening at left flank.

Mejaran took advantage and got his first chance in the 85th but hit the bar, four minutes later; he didn’t miss from point-blank range for the comeback.

USJ-R will next face Count FC today, while USC closes out its campaign against FC Intercebu on Thursday and needs a win—and for USJ-R to lose its last two games—to make the semifinals.

Men’s Open

In the first Men’s Open game, Joshua Fegidero was a man possessed as he scored 12 goals in Doraemon’s 14-0 win to bag the top spot.

Fegidero had six in each half and managed to accomplish their goal of overtaking CAFC even if the game was cut short by 10 minutes.

Jan Michael Abellana and Epifanio Ynot scored the other two goals for Doraemon, which used to play as Crazy Horse.

In the 17-Under games, Anton Aldeguer scored four times to lead Sacred Heart School-Jesuits, 14-0, over USC, while Blessed John XXIII Seminary beat Danao FC, 4-0.

Over at Springdale, Fug Sports defeated the host, 3-2, in the 12-Under match

Cebu Football - CAFC's late attack

FORMER RP team stalwart Arnie Pasenabo towed Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC) to a tough 3-2 win over University of San Carlos (USC) in the 10th Interclub Invitational Tournament Men's Open at the USC field yesterday.

CAFC is now safely on top with seven points on two wins and a draw, while USC is stuck at third with three points. Doraemon, which will play last place Count FC today, is second with four points.

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and FC Inter Cebu share fourth spot with a point.

CAFC dominated the attack at the start but found itself trailing, 1-0, in the 11th after Philip Kenei was brought down in the box and Kyle Soriano converted the penalty.

Rommel Cuizon got the first real chance for CAFC but his lob past an approaching Paolo Pascual was too high.

In the 37th, Cuizon was brought down in the box and Pasenabo calmly hit the lower left corner for the equalizer.

In the second half, Julius Acre had two chances inside the box but both his shots were deflected. Another 35-yard effort from the midfielder went straight to Pascual.

USC got ahead in the 58th with an excellent goal from Bernard Rotich just outside the box. Rotich pivoted left then hit the crossbar from 21 yards with his left foot.

Jo Sacil, who came in as a substitute, almost got the equalizer with his first touch of the game but Pascual managed to fend off his shot.

Gift

With only just seven minutes left, CAFC got a gift after Cuizon was again brought down. This time, Pasenabo hit the bottom right for the equalizer.

The goal buoyed CAFC and dampened USC. And Pasenabo took advantage.

Two minutes from time, Pasenabo's quickness got him past the defense and he found an open Cuizon, who just tapped in to an empty net for the winning goal.

USC will next face USJ-R at 3:30 p.m. today, while CAFC faces FC Inter Cebu tomorrow.

In the morning games, John Nieves scored six times to tow Abellana National School-Pomeroy, 11-1, over Danao FC, while Don Bosco College beat Blessed John XXIII Seminary, 2-0.

Sacred Heart School-Jesuits also took advantage of a miscue by Gilber Tan for a 1-0 win over Springdale.

Cebu Football - Football mom confronts player, gets banned !

By Edri K. Aznar

ORGANIZERS of the Cebu Amateur Football Club 10th National Interclub Football Cup have a new headache to face-misbehaving parents.

A football mom of Don Bosco College reportedly got irked and confronted a player from the opposing team for getting too physical with her son during DBC's 2-0 win over Blessed John XXIII Seminary yesterday.

"A player who tried to stop the confrontation got scratches on his face," said CAFC president Glen Quisido.

Because of the confrontation, the football mom won't be able to watch her son again in the tournament.

"In our initial plan, the Don Bosco parent won't be able to go near the field again," said Quisido, who was set to meet the rest of the CAFC officers late last night to discuss the incident.

Referee Archie Reyes was also set to submit his official report last night.

Aside from banning the enraged parent from the games, Quisido has already set up other measures.

"We will cordon the area so that only the players, coaches and officials will be in the field," he said.

The parents and spectators will now have a specific area from where they can watch the games, away from the field.

Ladies Field

FOR the first time a legitimate tournament to select the national team for women's soccer in the 14 Under and 19 Under category was held. It started Saturday at Panaad Sports Stadium here in Bacolod City.

Iloilo and Davao opened the games in the 19U and Negros Occidental battled Manila in the 14U in the second game. Host Negros Occidental-A Team was to meet Negros Oriental Football Association in the mainer.

Sunday's schedule is skills contest among 14 Under participants at 8 a.m. At 2 p.m. Negros Occidental A and B teams collide, followed by the Davao FA and Negros Occidental U14 match.

The Davaoenas 19 years old and under were to tangle with Negros Oriental FA for the main game of the tripleheader.

Tournament is set from April 24 to 28 with supervision of the Local Organizing Committee headed by Rafael Lizares, Jr. of the Executive Village Football Club.

General Secretary Cyril Dofitas of the Philippine Football Association said that from among these participants the national team will be formed. At least this will make it fair to all football clubs in the country that the selection was "palapit lapit lang.”

If you still remember, the U14 boys who were formed hastily in the AFC tournament last year that one was a pain to remember. That will not happen in the case of the distaff side.

Lizares and his group have one thing in mind - form a legitimate national team with members seen in actual competition. This is not just picking those closest to the association and club to wear the RP uniform.

From among these teenagers, the country will form, support and send them to international tournaments. Never mind if football is only number 2 or 3 sport in this basketball-crazy nation.

The football leaders have learned their lesson and we are happy to hear about it. Let the politicians do their work. The sportsmen are better left alone too to plan their destiny.

Perhaps the lady booters will make football officials and leaders change their mind. Hopefully those who cling to their posts and do not abide with the rules set by PFF and who have nothing to contribute to the development of sport can see their way out.

Have a happy feet, gentlemen.

NEGRENSE football enthusiasts are expected to troop to the Panaad Stadium Monday to witness third day hostilities in the ongoing five-day National Women’s Selections Tournament.

The said event will be hosted by the Executive Village Football Club, headed by businessman Junie Lizares in cooperation with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) represented in this five-day event by general secretary Cyril Dofitas and RP U14 head coach Josephine Loren, among others.

In last Saturday’s opening matches, Iloilo nipped Davao, 1-0, with the winning goal coming in the 90th minute of the U19 match.

Host Negros Occidental, mentored by Coach Jose Reymando Baldava, bowed to Manila, with scores of 0-0 in the first half, 1-0 in the second half and 2-0 in the third half in a U14 clash.

Cebu Football - Keeping it perfect

By Mike Limpag

FORMER RP team member Joshua Fegidero made Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC) pay for their loose defense in the dying minutes. He salvaged a 1-1 draw for Doraemon in their Men’s Open match in the 10th Interclub Invitational Tournament at the University of San Carlos (USC)-Technological Center yesterday.

Fegidero, who used to coach USC, chested in Rocky Garciano’s free kick from pointblank range in their final play to stay undefeated in the six-team event.

Doraemon, which used to be known as Crazy Horse, now has four points. Host CAFC also has four points and leads on goal difference owing to its 12-1 win over Count
FC last Saturday.

Had CAFC held on to its lead, it would have been three points ahead in the standings.

From the get-go, both teams showed they weren’t afraid to create chances in the offensive end.

CAFC, which also boasts of former RP team member Arni Pasenabo, had the first shot but Martin Bontia’s attempt sailed straight to the keeper.

A minute later, Fegidero’s low shot was tapped out by keeper Benjamin Sanchez.

Rommel Cuizon, who stood a foot shorter than his defender, scored the first goal in the 13th as he found the top corner from an acute angle from left flank.

Rocky Garciano had his first chance for an equalizer but was denied by Sanchez in the 22nd. Another lob by Fegidero in the 25th was also punched out.

In the 30th, CAFC’s Rene Menchavez’s free kick from 35 yards sailed just inches high, while Cuizon’s second attempt was caught by the keeper.

Both teams’ pace slowed dramatically in the later stages of the first half as they struggled with the morning sun but both also managed to pick it up in the second.

Pasenabo and Junard Aguilar played a beautiful give-and-go early in the second but the final shot sailed high. Fegidero eluded his defenders from the right flank, but no teammate was there to receive his perfect pass, which sailed harmlessly pass the goal mouth.

In the 89th, Fegidero made sure he wouldn’t miss as he rushed past everybody to redirect Garciano’s kick for the equalizer.

Before Garciano took the kick, the CAFC defenders and keeper were all pointing at Fegidero and were warning each other to look out for their blindside.

But that didn’t help them.

Crazy Horse will have a rest day today and will next face Count FC on Tuesday, while CAFC faces USC at 1:30 p.m. today.

After struggling against Crazy Horse yesterday, USC could have showed up sans keeper Paolo Pascual and it would have still won.

Striker Philipp Kenei had a field day yesterday as he helped USC to its first win, 8-0, against Count FC.

USC is now currently third with three points, while Count FC is last. FC Intercebu and the University of San Jose Recoletos were set to play their first game yesterday.

In the Boys 12 division, Springdale got its goals from Lorenzo Ceniza, SAbin Veloso and Terence Colmenares for a 3-2 win over M. Lhuillier.

Aflred Patigayon and Lendon Colina scored for M. Lhuillier, which will face Fugsports on Tuesday.

Today, MTI, a team manned by the first batch of players trained by M. Lhuillier Canduman, will have its debut against Sacred Heart SChool-Jesuits in the boys 14 at San Roque, while the host will face Springdale.

In the 38-above division, host SRFC will take on Erco while sister teams--and bitter rivals--Queen City A takes on Queen City B.

In the 12-under game at Springdale, the host will face fugsports, while SRFC A will also take on the host in the Players 10 division.

Cebo Football - Davao loses in National Women's Football

By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

DAVAO City's campaign in the National Women's Selection Tournament got off to a bad start as the lady booters suffered a 0-1 heartbreaking defeat to Iloilo in the Under-19 division Saturday afternoon at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

The Davao booters played tough defense all throughout the match, but just could not stop Iloilo's strike during injury time to absorb their first defeat in the six-team field.

Davao Football Association (DFA) secretary and head of delegation Erwin Protacio said Davao was forced to play defense in the face of an all-out Iloilo attack. He said Iloilo made more attempts at the goal than Davao, with two of them hitting the crossbar.

Protacio said he is hoping for a big rebound for the team in the second match, which was scheduled late Sunday afternoon against Negros Oriental.

UFL - Mendiola Egames Walk Out

by Coco Torre

Ascom, Fort Bonifacio- 9:25am- Mendiola Egames conceives a defeat without finishing the entire match. The loss was due to a decision of the team to walk out from the vicinity right after the half-time whistle has been blown.
The team’s decision might have been a result of the referee’s issuance of two yellow cards to each of the Orcullo brothers, Gerome and Gerard. The Orcullo brothers were sent off with red cards in minutes nearing the half-time whistle- with a score of 2-0 favoring Airforce Rider.

Opponents Airforce Rider were dismayed at Mendiola Egames’ decision as the team is currently finding means to overtake top team Kaya Digiprint in terms of goal average-a 3-0 win to them is not enough.

UFL - Mendiola E-Games and Green Archers Orient Freight Await Fate After Rumble

by Josue Jamlang

Last Sunday proved to be an eventful round of matches in the UFL, but not only because of the usual fascinating action that took place, but also due to the unfortunate and bizarre scenes in the match between Mendiola E-Games and Green Archers Orient Freight.

The game, pivotal for both team’s ambitions in the League, had to be abandoned early in the second half, after a small altercation between opposition players turned into an all out free for all in a blink of an eye. It was a scene of players throwing strikes and others trying to cool heads down for a solid three minutes.

When the fiasco finally came to an end, the referee dished out a total of nine red cards to the two teams, with further fines and possible penalties still yet to be announced. The League’s Technical Committee had a meeting on Wednesday night to discuss the events that transpired on Sunday, and to debate over the subsequent repercussions that should take place

Football is undoubtedly a game that involves plenty of passion, intensity, and physicality, but such altercations such as what took place, are a rarity and should not be seen as accepted behavior in the sport. The shameful event, which marred an otherwise fantastic week of football in the UFL, will surely be met with plenty of heavy penalties and strong actions from the governing body.

Cebu Football - Veterans win

By Edri K. Aznar

POWERHOUSE Crazy Horse edged out the younger University of San Carlos (USC), 3-2, in the opening match of the Cebu Amateur Football Club 10th National Interclub Football Cup yesterday at the USC-Technological Center.

The match was fairly competitive despite the deep roster of Crazy Horse that was boosted by a couple of veteran former RP national team players.

Former RP team member Boyet Cañedo drew first blood as he scored the first goal just 10 minutes left before halftime. Another ex-RP team player, Joshua Figedero, who is also the former coach of USC, added another goal for a 2-0 lead.

However, Kyle Soriano counterattacked and shaved the lead to 2-1 just before the half.

In the second half, Figedero got on fire and he added another for a 3-1 count before a determined Soriano fueled his team with a last-minute goal.

“Most of them are college freshmen but they played fairly well against Crazy Horse, “ said Don-Don Ramos, who took over the coaching duties of USC for Gary Panagsagan.

Meanwhile, M. Lhuillier started strong in the Players 10 Division with an 8-0 win over host Springdale with two players scoring a hat trick

Archie Gemina and Kenneth Domingo had three goals each while Julbert Arias had two. M. Lhuillier will next face San Roque FC B on Tuesday, while Springdale will face SRFC A on Monday.

In the Boys 17 division, favorites Abellana National School-Pomeroy and Springdale are off to a hot start.

ANS-Pomeroy beat Blessed John XXIII Seminary, 4-1; while Springdale routed USC, 9-0.

Iloilo-Davao, Dumaguete-Bacolod in today’s women’s bootfest

By Henry C. Villalva

U19 women’s squads carrying the colors of Iloilo and Davao, Negros Oriental and host Negros Occidental clash in Saturday’s opening matches of the 2010 National Women’s Football Selections Tournament slated to reel off at the football pitch of the Panaad Sports and Recreational Park in Barangay Mansilingan.

Three matches are scheduled immediately after the 2:00 p.m. opening ceremonies.

The first match at 2:00 p.m. is in the U19 category between Iloilo and Davao followed at 3:30 p.m. by the U14 battle between Manila and host Negros Occidental.

The day’s final match is again in the U19 division between host Negros Occidental “A” and neighboring Negros Oriental Football Association (NORFA) of Dumaguete City which is scheduled at 6:00 p.m.

The April 24-28 event is hosted by the Executive Village Football Club headed by Junie Lizares in cooperation with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) which will be represented in this event by general secretary Cyril Dofitas.

The five-day competition aims to select the players who will compose the two national squads that will represent the country in two separate international tournaments this year.

The U14 national team will see action in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Festival of Football in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in June, while the national U19 squad will see action in the AFC Asian Women’s Qualifying event set sometime in November at a still undisclosed venue, with EVFC prodding the PFF to bid for the hosting of said event here in Bacolod City at the Panaad stadium.

The Negros Occidental U14 team is coached by Jose Reymando Baldava of Victorias City with Isa Carmona, daughter of former national player John Carmona as team captain.

The U19 Negros Occidental team, meanwhile, is mentored by head coach Warren Concepcion, with Paul Espinosa and Rinelle De Oca as assistants, and with Chermaine Guancia as team captain.

All matches in the five-day series are open to the public for free, organizers said.

Cebu Football - 10th CAFC Interclub kicks off at USC today

By Edri K. Aznar and Iste S. Leopoldo

THE picture isn’t that bright for Paref-Springdale when it plays in the 10th National Interclub Football Cup today.

Coach Mario Ceniza, who steered the Central Visayas to the silver medal in the Palarong Pambansa, said he isn’t expecting any of his teams to figure prominently in the Boys 17 and 12, and the Players 10 divisions.

“The boys who played in the Palarong Pambansa are from a different age group. With U-17, I only have five key players left and most of my players are new,” Ceniza said. He also added that he is a bit worried because most of his players are still having their vacation.

Today, Springdale will face off with University of San Carlos (USC) North Campus at the USC-TC field, while defending champion Abellana National School Pomeroy takes on Blessed John at 7:30 a.m.

“(Palaro players) Christopher Go and Ramon Borromeo are still in Manila while Iken Ong just arrived yesterday and has confirmed that he will be joining the league,” Ceniza said. The other key player who also confirmed his participation is Robby Medalle.

Also at the USC field, Queen City United will take on Count FC, while defending Aboitiz Football Cup titleholder Crazy Horse battles host USC in the Men’s Open division.

British-Pinoy shows he's got talent in football

LONDON - Jason Arroyo is a 20-year old with a passion for football and a need for speed. So, when he found out that Nike was holding a competition in search of UK's fastest players, he jumped at the chance.

The British Pinoy entered the London trial of the Nike Football+ Tear up the Pitch event on April 11, which was advertising the release of the new Mercurial Vapor Superfly II boots. He blitzed through the CR9 speed test, popularized by Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Up against 60 other players, Arroyo completed the drill and ended up second fastest overall, after whizzing through a series of challenges aimed at testing reaction, dribbling skills and first-step acceleration.

The top five finishers were then selected to compete in a final showdown against teams from Birmingham and Manchester, where trials were also held.

Watched by Arsenal Football Club's Andrei Arshavin and Theo Walcott, the team from London triumphed in the final and won an all-expenses paid trip to Spain, where they will get to tear it up all over again at Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium.

This weekend, April 24-25, Jason and his team-mates will be touring the home of the European Champions, watching Barcelona's La Liga clash with Xerez. They will also take part in a Nike Football+ elite training session with Barcelona Head Coach Josep Guardiola.

The fleet-footed winger, who is also a key player for Philippine United Football Club (PUFC) in the UK, is eager to impress. He has shown that Filipinos also have the talent to mix it with the best in football.

“It makes me feel good and really proud”, Arroyo said.

Palarong Pambansa - Davao win

In football, Davao Region walloped Central Visayas, 2-0, in a battle of giant-slayers to capture the gold.

Midfielder Jomar Acedo delivered both the two goals – the first on the 39th minute and the other on the 47th – while 5-10 goalie Dominador Tato IV blocked and deflected 10 shots to underscore Davao’s solid defense.

Represented by booters from MR School, Ateneo de Davao, University of Mindanao and Davao City National High School, Davao thus nailed its first title since winning in Tubod, Lanao del Norte seven years ago.

“It’s sweeter because in Tubod, most of the teams that participated there were from Mindanao. This time, everybody participated, so it’s really memorable,” said Davao coach Ramonito Carreon

Palarong Pambansa - Davao seeks soccer gold

By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

SAN JOSE, Tarlac -- Vengeance is sweet as Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) avenged its elimination round loss by nipping Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA), 2-1, in the 2010 Palarong Pambansa secondary boys football semifinals at Tarlac Recreational Park (TRP) field here Friday.

With the victory, Davraa arranged a gold medal match with Central Visayas Region Athletic Association starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Compostela Valley's Marlon Demapanag broke the ice by hitting a goal in the 11th minute but WVRAA's Archie Pamilar countered with a goal in the 14th to force a 1-1 standoff.

As tension ensued in both camps following the draw, Davraa coach Ramonito "Lalas" Carreon made use of the halftime break to rally his wards to go all out for the win.

Davraa booters intensified its defense when game resumed even as goalkeeper Dominador Tato V foiled four attempts of highly-touted WVRAA strikers at the goal.

WVRAA's goalie, meanwhile, fouled Davraa forward Danilo Lascuna, a University of Mindanao mainstay, inside the penalty box, in the 47th minute.

Davraa's Frances Jay Abrasaldo then lived up to expectations as he converted on the crucial penalty kick for his team that never looked back to secure the win and a ticket to the finals.

"I'm so happy our adjustment in the positions of the players worked this time. We had an experiment when we played WVRAA the first time. Tato then was a defender, now he is goalkeeper and was very good at it. The rest of the players were comfortable as they assumed their regular positions," coach Lalas told Sun.Star Davao.

"I thank God for bringing us to this moment. I'm proud of the players for giving their hearts and efforts to make the win possible. We all look forward to playing in our first-ever finals," he added.

A misty-eyed Abrasaldo, a son of a driver, said the vernacular: "In the penalty kick, all I ever think of was make the goal. It was a huge task at hand but I was confident I'll make it and I did. I'm so happy to play such a big role in this victory."

Tato is excited to play for the gold.

"I felt more confident being a goalie. I'm excited to play such role when we battle for the gold tomorrow," he said.

Aside from Demapanag, Abrasaldo and Tato, the team is composed of Emar's Jomar Acedo, Imardino Polo and Faith Jul Canales, Ateneo's Romeo Raphael Du, Derrico Gabriel Diamante, Francis Patrick Lim, Emmanuel Josue Brisson, Jorem Samuel Jabile and Jan Ryven Lumabao, and Davao City National High School's Rocky Custodio and Dean Mark Angotas.

The Soccer Fiesta 2010 kicked off last April 10 to 11 at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. The second leg takes place at the SM Megamall from April 17 to 18 while the last leg will be held from May 1 to 2 at the BLOCK Atrium in SM City North EDSA in Quezon City.

Real Sports Authority president Rely San Agustin said the biggest challenge in promoting football locally is that the Philippines is a "basketball country".

“The Philippines is a basketball country while in every other country, football is the No. 1 spectator sport in the world,” he said Tuesday in an interview on “Mornings@ANC.”

But organizers believe that football is a sport that Filipinos can explore and even excel in.

“This is one sport I believe the Philippines can be up there,” said Castrol Philippine Country Representative Marcelo Sota, Jr.

Soccer Fiesta aims to drum up interest and awareness of the world’s most popular sport, with the 2020 FIFA World Cup in South Africa just 2 months away.

San Agustin said: “I think now is the opportunity to let the Filipinos know that ‘Hey, here's another sport where we can excel in.”

He cited that the Philippines was one of the top football countries in Asia in the 1970s.

Fascinating and beautiful

Participants in the Soccer Fiesta 2010 can look forward to individual events such as PS3 challenges, foosball competitions, skills challenges and even face painting for those who will buy FIFA World Cup merchandise.

The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., is open to all ages except for the Castrol Skills Challenge that is open for ages 18 and above. Admission is free.

Futkal, the organization that promotes football in depressed areas in Metro Manila, will facilitate various activities at The Castrol Arena.

The “Futkaleros,” led by their founder Peter Amores, will facilitate the Dribbling Competition, Juggling Competition, Beat the Goalkeeper, Kick for a Prize and Skills Challenge Competition, the soccer version of the NBA All-Star skills challenge.

Amores, also a social entrepreneur, said that the Soccer Fiesta is “one way to enjoy your summer.”

Moreover, he talked about the wonder of football: “It’s such a fascinating sport, such a large scale sport with 11 players… It’s a mind game with a lot of physical interaction, a beautiful game to watch.”

National football women's selection tourney set

By Henry C. Villalva

THE Executive Village Football Club, in cooperation with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), will host the staging of the 2010 National Women's Selection Tournament in Bacolod City.

The event will be held on April 24-28 at the Panaad Sports and Recreational Park pitch in Barangay Mansilingan.

Organizers announced this Wednesday during a luncheon press conference held at Luxur’s Place. Attending the conference were EVFC president Junie Lizares, coaches Warren Concepcion (U18) and Jose Raymando Baldava (U13), and Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa) referees committee head Dennis Estaniel.

Also present were U18 Negros team skipper Charmaine Guancia and U13 Negros team captain Isa Carmona, daughter of former RP team standout John Carmona.

The objective of the tournament is to select members of the national U18 and U14 teams that will carry the country’s colors in two forthcoming international events, namely, the U14 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Festival of Football in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in June, and the AFC U18 qualifying event scheduled in October at a still to be identified venue.

Lizares also announced that the two other tournament officials who will be involved in running this event are Match Commissioner Joseph Gensaya and General Coordinator Gus Rivas.

The 22-member Negros 13 Under squad is composed of 9 players from San Carlos City, 7-8 players from Talisay City and 4 others from the Rizal Elementary School in Bacolod City.

Meanwhile, the 18 Under Negros team is composed of 3 players from University of St. La Salle, 4 from St. Scholastica’s Academy, 3 from Victorias City and the rest from San Carlos City.

A total of 28 13 under and another 30 18 Under club teams participated in the two-weekend tryouts conducted by the EVFC to select the members of the Negros Occidental squad in this tournament.

Six teams in both categories are seeing action in the national selection tournament, namely, Manila, Davao, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Iloilo and host Negros Occidental.

Cordi booters to make history in Tarlac

TARLAC CITY – “Don’t count us out, ” declared Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) secondary boys football coach Aries Bocalan as his charges scored their first win against their opposition from Region VIII, at the Tarlac Recreational Park football grounds, April 12.

Left wing Jenno Aquino (No. 12) drew first blood with a long shot from the left field in the first 10-minutes of the first half.

Seeing a hole in the Region VIII defense, Leonard Austria (No. 10) passed the rubber to Aquino who expertly dribbled through three Caraga players for the goal.

At the other end of the field meanwhile, goalie Nelson Garcia kept the ball from touching net in the second half as Region VIII stubbornly tried to equalize.

Efforts of the opposing team were however flustered when CAR captain and striker Domingo Sayan miraculously scored off a rebound of his own missed shot icing the green booters’ win, 2-nil.

The CAR team shall be facing powerhouse National Capital Region (NCR) in its bracket of four teams which include Cotabato and Caraga.

A win over NCR assures a semis birth for the CAR team. A loss on the other hand places them in a must-win situation against Cotabato for the semis.

Bocalan assessing his team’s chances against NCR said, “The NCR team, composed of mostly of Ateneo players, is bigger than us.”

“However,” expressing confidence towards his wards Bocalan added, “we have the speed to neutralize their height advantage.”

Bocalan is banking on his strikers whom he described as ‘gifted sprinters’ to make history for CAR who has yet to see gold in Palaro football. (Isagani Liporada with Xania Carandang)

By Henry C. Villalva

ORGANIZERS of the 2010 U19 and U14 National ladies football championship led by the Executive Village Football Club in cooperation with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) are scheduled to meet members of the local sports media at lunch at Luxur’s Place in connection with the staging here on April 25 to 26 at the Panaad football field of the twin championships.

Expected to lead organizers today is businessman Junie Lizares, president of the host Executive Village Football Club together with his fellow officers and organizers of the said national event.

EVFC is also expected to present the complete Negros Occidental U19 and U14 lineups today, said U19 coach and former University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos varsity standout Warren Concepcion.

Lizares said the move to host the twin national events here at Panaad is a product of continued consultations among various Visayas provincial football associations coordinated by PFF Womens Committee chairman Mariano Araneta who has initiated preparations for this event with Cebu’s Richard Montyre, Dumaguete’s Dick Emperado, Lizares and their counterpart from Iloilo.

In this regard, EVFC has conducted training camps in both categories to select players who will represent Negros Occidental in the two-day event, which will be open to the public for free.

The national U14 champion squad will carry the nation’s colors in the Association of Southeast Asian Nation U14 championship in Vietnam this June organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) while the U19 champion team will see action in the AFC U19 qualifying event in October at a still to be determined venue.

Cebu Football - No girls team in 10th interclub football

NO GIRLS WILL be seeing action in this year's 10th edition of the National Interclub Football Cup tournament slated from April 24 to May 2 in various football fields in Cebu City.

Tournament organizer Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC) decided to cancel the Girls 17 and 14 Under divisions after no other girls team signed up for the event except for Sacred School-Jesuit.

Glenn Quisido, CAFC president, said he met with girls team coaches but they said they cannot come up with a full lineup much less complete the 25 player-lineup required per team participant.

Earlier, Quisido said they would at least need four teams each for competitions to be held in the girls divisions.

After yesterday's deadline of entries, Quisido said that 38 teams with two coming from outside Cebu have confirmed their participation to the tournament considered as one of the biggest outside of Manila. Visiting teams are Ormoc and Xavier Manila. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON

AFF Futsal - 0-4 against Indonesia

Already-qualified Indonesia kept their perfect record intact as they pummelled the Philippines 4-0 in their last round robin fixtures to put themselves in the best of mind for the final on Sunday.

Following a stuttering start, the Indonesians only managed to score a single goal in the first half before nailing the remainder after the break.

“We still need to be more stable in our approach to our opponents. We should start at the same level whoever we are up against. Like today, we were a little lax at the start against the Philippines and that is not good,“ said Robby Hartono, the head coach for Indonesia.

With Indonesia already through to the final and the Philippines out of contention, the game was a lot more open at the start.

The Philippines were relying on quick counter-attacks as Indonesia kept pressing and it was not until the tenth minute of play that they finally broke the deadlock when a short pass from Ali Haidar was slotted home by Socrates Matulessy.

The Philippines tried to push forward after the break but they just can’t find their way through and two minutes into the second half, they fell further behind when Sayan Karmadi unleashed a stiff grounder which ricocheted off Misagh Bahadoran for an own goal.

The goal seems to affect the Philippines as they tried to defend in numbers only to be punished yet again on 27th minute when Karismawan finished a move by Jaelani Ladjanibi.

Jaelani was the feeder yet again five minutes later when Socrates rounded off the afternoon for Indonesia’s fourth and final goal.

“We tried but it was a tough game and since we are already out of contention, that took the fire out. We will just have to look to next year to improve our challenge,“ added Philippines head coach Ismaeil Sedigh.

Cebu Football - Cviraa crams football practice

By Iste S. Leopoldo

THE Central Visayas secondary football squad is making the best out of the little time left before this year’s Palarong Pambansa starts this Sunday in Tarlac by tweaking some kinks in its armor.

The Central Visayas secondary football squad, coached by Mario Ceniza, is practicing twice a day in two different football fields in Tarlac to improve its game before facing the top football teams in the whole country.

“In our practice games, we see our loopholesand problems in terms of attacking and defending. Our problem yesterday (Wednesday) was our defending and we worked it out this morning (yesterday),” Ceniza told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Central Visayas drew with Zamboanga, 1-1, in an exhibition match the other day.

“Our blending is working out well. The endurance and physical aspect is also okay. We just need finer tune-ups,” said the Paref-Springdale head coach.

Ceniza is eying one more practice game before resting for a day coming into the annual national tournament.

AFF Futsal - Philippines beat Myanmar

Myanmar once again showed that they can start strongly when they took the lead against the Philippines through a third minute strike from Htein Lin but in the end, the just did not have the material to carry them through as fell to a 5-2 loss.

Striker Bahadoran was the toast of the team on the day when he scored four goals (18th, 20th, 34th and 37th minute) as Ariel Zerrudo contributed the other in the 38th minute for the win.

Myanmar nailed their second goal of the game in the 30th minute.

“Against a team like Myanmar, we cannot play to our usual system so today we switched to the lone striker upfront and three players at the back. We did not have enough players for the tournament this year but I think that for next year, we will have a stronger team,” added Philippines head coach Ismaeil Sedigh.

“We had to of our key players injured and even though we scored the early goal, we just did not have enough material to make the substitutes and protect the lead that we had carved. We played badly in the second half and made far too many mistakes,” added Myanmar team manager Yei Htut Tin.

VIETNAM WHITEWASH PHILIPPINES

HO CHI MINH CITY (6 April 2010) – Vietnam picked up their second win in the AFF Futsal Championship 2010 when they whitewashed the Philippines 4-0 as Indonesia beat Myanmar 7-4 in the match that was played at the Phu Tho Stadium.

Vietnam, who had scored a thumping 8-1 win over Myanmar the previous day, followed it up with another convincing performance to take a two-goal lead at the half.

“There was a little improvement and definitely, it is much better than what they showed in the first game. But I think that maybe it is a little too hot today,“ said Vietnam head coach Sergio Gargelli.

The Philippines, who had conceded a loss to the Malaysians in the first game of the tournament yesterday, were a lot more composed this time round as they restricted Vietnam offensive play at the start.

In fact, it was the Philippines who had the first real look at goal when the mercurial Misagh Bahadoran drove through the Vietnam defence for a shot which came off the upright.

Rattled, Vietnam upped the tempo and while they could not get past Philippines keeper Hamidreza Geshnizjani with their earlier attempts, they finally found the space to score from a set piece off Nguyen Bao Quan.

The Philippines tried as hard as they could to find the equaliser and a way back into the game but they just could not break down the Vietnam defence.

And just two minutes to the breather, they fell further behind when
Nguyen Quoc Bao had a double take with his attempt to beat Hamid for the second time in the afternoon.

The second half was all Vietnam as they shore up their defence before scoring two further goals from Huynh Ba Tuan in the 22nd minute and then Bao Quan completing his double with the second goal a minute later.

“I’m not too happy with some of the decisions of the referee. If they had not made some mistakes against us, we could have turned the game around,” added Philippines head coach Ismaeil Sedigh.

AFF FUTSAL - MALAYSIA EDGE OUT PHILIPPINES

Pic : aseanfootball.org

Malaysia had to fight from being two goals down before they were able to edge out the Philippines 5-3 as hosts Vietnam trounced Myanmar 8-1 in the opening matches of the AFF Futsal Championship 2010 that was played this afternoon at the Phu Tho Stadium.

“It was not an inspiring performance but it was more important to win the there points,” offered Malaysian team manager Hamidin Mohd Amin afterwards.

The Malaysians still reeling from their failure to qualify for the AFC Futsal Championship this year, found themselves back-pedalling the first ten minutes of the game when Ariel Zarrudo pressed Malaysian defender Mohd Fairuz Mohd Nor before scoring from a right angle.

Just several seconds later, they fell further behind when off a long pass from the back, Misagh Bahadoran found the space and time to put the ball beyond the reach of keeper S. Devandran.

But the Malaysians did not lose their shape and barely three minutes later, Mohd Ali Mahat broke through the Philippines defence before scoring the first goal.

Two minutes later, they drew level through Ruzaley AbduL Aziz as the Malaysians then raced to a 3-2 lead at the half when Ali again found the back of the net after sidestepping Bongbong Dorlas.

The Malaysians then started stronger into the second half to stretch their lead to 4-2 off Qaiser Abdul Kadir as the Philippines then rallied to tighten up their defence.

And their hardwork paid dividends when Bahadoran sizzled with a solo effort to pas through two players before slamming to the top of the Malaysian goal for the score to be at 4-3 to the advantage of the Malaysians.

But in their eagerness to find the equaliser, the Philippines were a little lax at the back and that allowed Mohd Khairul Effendy Bahrin to capitalise on a defensive error to score the fifth goal for the Malaysians.

“We are finally playing Futsal and we played to a system but unfortunately, we failed to score with the chances that we have created,” added Philippines head coach Ismaeil Sedigh.

Finding ways to promote football

Finding ways to promote football
By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) president Charlie Cojuangco yesterday bared plans of importing European experts to conduct clinics for referees, coaches, physical trainers and even sports
journalists in a serious effort to lay the groundwork for a nationwide promotional campaign with support from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Cojuangco said former Uruguay pro Maor Rozen, who is in his fifth visit here since 2008, will assist in tapping the experts from European leagues during the off-months of July and August.

“We won’t be offering licensing clinics or courses,” said Cojuangco. “We’ll be inviting anyone interested to advance their knowledge of the game. With Maor, we hope to assist in raising the level of competence of our referees, coaches, physical trainers and journalists so that in turn, they may educate our players.”

Cojuangco, 46, said there are many ways to promote football although starting at the grassroots level sets the direction for the future.

Limpag: Getting to South Africa

By Mike T. Limpag

ONE of the sentences you hear regularly these days is “Vote for me.” It’s not one of my favorites, but it’s one that we have to live with.

We can’t be a democracy without it.

But I like “Don’t open this door” better since it guarantees that what’s behind the door is interesting. Or my other favorite—“minors not allowed.” “Promise never to repeat this,” always makes you think of whom you can tell before you hear what you promised not to tell.

“Vote for me” is sometimes preceded by something funny.
They dance or they say they’re really poor despite driving Mercedes Benzes. Ever notice how so many rich people are suddenly so poor, these days? They say they’re smart, or they’re after your welfare or para sa mahirap even if they can’t recognize a can of sardines even if it dances butt-naked in front of them.

Vote for me!

I always wanted to avoid that phrase. It’s kinda ridiculous. Back in high school and college, I told a lot of people to vote for them or vote straight. But never vote for me.

I’m not running for public office, by the way. Nor am I telling you to endorse my favorite color yellow.

We are in the sports pages after all.

I’m rambling about “vote for me” because of a dream to see the World Cup in person—yep, that World Cup in South Africa this June.
An all-expenses-paid trip!

And they’d even throw in a brand new Sony Ericsson handset so I’d get to brag about my trip to friends and other people who’d die to be in my place.

I’m not trying to pull your leg by the way. Today is April 5, not April 1.

I’m just a few clicks away from realizing that dream and to get there, I have to ask people, well, to vote for me.

Sigh.

This all started March 25, when somebody posted a comment in my blog and asked if I was interested in joining a Sony Ericsson contest for Asia Pacific bloggers.
It was a shot in the dark.

The deadline was on March 30, so I submitted an old entry, that one about the CES Theater of Dreams.

If I was aiming for a dream, why not drag CES’ own dream in it, I thought.

I learned I made the top 20—the final leg they call it—and surprise, surprise, I’m the only one from the Philippines.

Not surprisingly, I am currently 16th in the top 20 with 30 votes. The top three have 724, 647 and 388 votes.

Here’s the e-mail I got just a couple of days ago:

“Hi Mike,

We’re pleased to inform you that your post has been shortlisted to be in the Top 20! You’re now in the final leg so do mobilize your readers and get them to vote for you here: http://extratime.posterous.com/tag/top20/ (third post from bottom).

Remember, voting is limited to once a day per person. :) Once again, congrats!

Cheers,

Amelia Wong”
