CEBU, Philippines - Former Cebu football star turned decorated coach Glenn Ramos returned the Philippine Team after almost two decades since his last stint, this time as chief tactician of the RP Under-16 squad.
Ramos, who is now in Bacolod City for the national pool’s training, received his appointment papers from the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) last week.
“When they (PFF officials) called me and asked me if I am willing to coach the RP Under-16, I readily said yes. It’s an honor for me although it still depends upon the approval of the schools I am coaching here and of course the go signal of my family. I’m happy that Don Bosco and UC are kind enough to allow me to accept the job,” said Ramos.
Ranged against 30 other coaches all over the country that crowded PFF’s list, Ramos’ achievements, reputation as coach, and exposure in international competitions paved the way for him to wrest the coaching chores.
Ramos onced played for the RP team as a striker and mid-fielder starting in 1984. His last tour of duty with the Nationals was in 1991 although in 1988 he led the RP representatives composed of Cebuano players to the Coke Go For Goal Football Cup in Hong Kong.
As coach, Ramos steered the teams he handled to several national titles including in the Palarong Pambansa and the Philippine Olympic Festival.
As the one calling the shots for the RP Under-16, Ramos was given free hand in choosing his assistant coaches that include former RP players John Carmona of San Carlos City, Joseph Santos and John Michael Castanos of Manila, and Reymando Baldago of Don Bosco-Victorias.
From the current pool of 29 players including Cebuano Jico Noel, Ramos and his coaching staff will select the final cast that will form part of Team Philippines to Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 Group E qualifier next month also in Bacolod.
With such a short notice, Ramos said he cannot promise too much but vowed to do his best to make sure that his wards will put up a good fight and hopefully come up with an impressive showing.
