Azkals scrape past Bangladesh to top group B

Despite a raucous home support, the Philippines came to Sylhet to silence the home side, where they prevailed by the slimmest of winning scorelines to top Group B of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup Friday evening.

It took a scoring debut for Kenshiro Daniels and a solid throwback goalkeeping by Louie Casas to give Anto Gonzales his second win in as many matches, and will have to wait for tomorrow to face the Group A runner-up.

Right from the opening whistle, Bangladesh went direct, taking the first chance just four minutes in, when Mohammed Rahmat Mia's long throw-in found the head of skipper Topu Barman, but Louie Casas foiled their attack not just once, but twice in that stretch.

However, it was the Azkals who took the lead to silence Sylhet in the 24th minute, when Misagh Bahadoran picked out Kenshiro Daniels just inside the box and the former Kaya winger made no mistake with his right foot to open his national goal-scoring account on his 21st cap.

Despite the deficit, Bangladesh continued their attack, and almost had an equalizer six minutes before half-time, but Casas again became the hero once again after keeping the ball from going into the net from Robiul Hasan's corner to preserve the lead at the break.

The home side then continued their onslaught in the second half as they look for an equalizer, but Casas turned back the clock to deny the Bengal Tigers numerous times to preserve the 1-0 scoreline, scraping past numerous goalmouth scrambles after every Bangladeshi corner to get his second straight shutout.

Booters go down fighting

Despite an improved performance, a fumble from Tapu Barman cost Bangladesh a 1-0 defeat to the Philippines in their final group match in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup at the Sylhet District Stadium yesterday.

Michael Daniels separated the sides with his 24th-minute strike to help the Philippines finish top of Group B with two wins. They will play the first semifinal against the Group A runners-up on October 9 while hosts Bangladesh, who finished second, will play the Group A champions the next day.

The hosts will likely face favourites Palestine, who can top Group A with a draw against Nepal today.

As both sides had confirmed their semifinal berths before yesterday's match, they rested numerous key players. The hosts left out Jamal Bhuiyan, Mahabubur Rahman Sufil, Wali Faisal and Biswanath Gosh on the sidelines.

Playing without any pressure, the men in red and green enthralled the 25,000 capacity crowd with a scintillating performance that kept a Philippines under pressure from the word go. However, they could not find a goal, which was perhaps deserved.

Jamie Day's charges put up an organised display with the defenders and midfielders maintaining two unbroken lines, except on one occasion, and controlled the game. Philippines seemed content in the knowledge that even a draw would see them top the group on goal difference.

Bangladesh came close to taking a lead in the fourth minute when Tapu headed Rahmat Mia's long throw and goalkeeper Michael Casas's fisted the ball off Nathanael Andrew and onto the woodwork.

The visitors had opted to play on the counter and that paid dividends in the 24th minute. Tapu fumbled and gave the ball way to opposing captain Bahadoran Misagh, who released Michael Daniels. Tapu slid in to stop the striker's drive, but could only deflect it into the near post.

Bangladesh dominated the second half and even managed to create a few good chances. However, Towhidul Alam Sabuz and Nabib Newaj Jibon failed to cash in on those opportunities.

With the game into its final minute, Biplu Ahmed found a nice chance to equalise from a scramble following a corner but the winger headed straight to the hands of Casas and Bangladesh, leaving Bangladesh to be satisfied with a second place in the group.

Philippines win group , play semifinal in Cox's Bazar on Tuesday

Rest day for hosts?

Both Bangladesh and the Philippines will apparently look to conserve their strength for the semifinals when the sides face off in the final Group B fixture of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup at the Sylhet District Stadium today.

The match will get underway at 6:30pm with Maasranga TV and Nagorik TV telecasting the game live from the venue.

Bangladesh progressed into the semifinals with a match remaining by handing Laos a 1-0 loss in the tournament opener before Philippines sent the Southeast Asian Nation packing with a 3-1 defeat. This is the third time in a row that Bangladesh have qualified for the semifinal stage.

Therefore, the match at hand is of less importance to both teams with their semifinal battle in Cox's Bazar in sight. And although both sides might deem it prudent to rest some of their key players, neither have forgotten their target of finishing on the top of the group with an outright victory, indicating that today's encounter should be an entertaining one.

There may be a big gap between the two in terms of FIFA Rankings -- Philippines are 114th while Bangladesh are 193rd -- but they seem equal in quality as Bangladesh beat Philippines 3-2 in the 1984 Asian Nations Cup while the latter came out 3-0 winners in an invitational tournament encounter in Myanmar in 2011.

Since then, the sides have not met at any competition but Philippines were busy climbing up the FIFA ladder while Bangladesh were climbing down. To make things bleaker, Philippines qualified for the 2019 Asian Cup while Bangladesh were eliminated from the 2019 Asian Games Qualifiers play-off.

And although Philippines brought their second-string team, they seem stronger than the hosts, especially with the way they beat Laos even though five of their players joined the team on the match day.

“Philippines are a good side. They have very good players that showed yesterday [Wednesday]. They have a good game going forward, so it going to be a tough game for us. We will go there for victory but I think we need a little a bit of luck tomorrow [Friday],” said Bangladesh's English coach Jamie Day after practice at the Sylhet BKSP ground yesterday.

Qualifying for the semifinals may have been Bangladesh's pre-tournament target, but Jamie is now thinking about the final.

“We are confident and everyone is happy with we achieved to be in the semifinals, that was the target. So now for us is to go to this game and play well and take that performance hopefully into the semifinals where we obviously want to win and go through,” said the 38-year-old coach while hinting that players ranging from the backline to the forward lineup could be rested.

Sushanta Tripura, Rahmat Mia, Mamunul Islam, Emon Babu and Towhidul Alam Sabuz are likely to be in the first eleven alongside goalkeeper Ashraful Islam Rana, Tutul Hossain Badsha, Tapu Barman, Rabiul Hasan, Biplu Ahmed and Nabib Newaj Jibon.

“We will strike a balanced and performing side as we are looking to win the match. At the same time, we will rest some players to prepare for semis but we will definitely go for win against Bangladesh,” said Philippines interim coach Andres Crisanto Gonzales, adding that everyone in his team have had international exposure.

Azkals eliminate Laos to open Bangabandhu til

The Philippines opened their campaign in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup with a 3-1 win on Laos Wednesday evening in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

With the win, the Azkals reserves led by Anto Gonzales were also through to the semifinal without any complications, and they will take on the host nation on Friday after leading group B by virtue of superior goal difference.

Laos, meanwhile, ended their campaign without a point after dropping their opener against Bangladesh two days ago.

Jovin Bedic put the Azkals ahead at the stroke of half-time to open his international account on his first start from the spot, sending Saymanolinh Paseuth grounded after being tackled down by Souksun Souksavath in the box.

Philippines MNT To Participate In Bangabandhu Gold Cup 2018

The Philippine Men’s National Team’s preparation for both the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 and the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 continues this October with the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament 2018.

The competition is organized by the Bangladesh Football Federation and will be held from 1-12 October 2018. The Philippines will face host Bangladesh and Laos in Group B. The other group comprises of Nepal, Palestine, and Tajikistan.

The Philippines will first face Laos on 3 October followed by Bangladesh on 5 October. Both matches will be held at the Sylhet Zila Stadium in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The top two teams at the end of the group stage will advance to the knockout stages.

Team head coach is Scott Cooper and assisted by coaches Andres Gonzales and Randolfo Clarino.

21 players have been called up for the tournament. The team left for Bangladesh last Friday 28 September 2018.
