Myanmar U-19 stops U-21 Azkals

by Olmin Leyba
MANILA, Philippines - Myanmar Under-19 dealt the Philippine U-21 Azkals a 3-1 beating Sunday night to sweep Group A of the fifth Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) in Brunei.
Nyein Chan Aung (11’), Ko Tun (55’), and Swan Htet Aung (88’) struck for the Burmese, who finished group play with a perfect 12 points to tow Thailand (nine points) into the semis.
The U-21 Azkals, who created a number of scoring chances but only connected once via Kenshiro Daniels (63’), wound up with four points on a win, a draw and two losses.
“I think it was a great game as it was the best we played in the tournament so far,” Phl coach Jim Fraser said in a report in the Brunei Times.
Myanmar seized a 2-0 lead but Phl pressed on and eventually pulled one back with Daniels slamming his freekick from the right edge of the box into the back of the net.
Substitute Kennedy Venida Uzoka nearly evened the count but botched his shot from six yards out. Daniels got a couple more chances but he misfired from close range and his later freekick into the crowded box was quashed by Myanmar keeper Myo Min Latt’s acrobatic save. Sub Paolo Salenga later launched a shot that sailed just inches off the left corner.
We had chances to put it away in the second half but it has been our problem throughout the tournament – poor finishing,” said Fraser.
“Overall, I’m satisfied. It was a good game of football and they were good opponents who can do well in the semis,” added the Australian mentor, who’s tasked to prepare the U-21 Azkals for a future foray into the Southeast Asian Games."

Mission accomplished for Philippines coach

Saturday, August 16, 2014

PHILIPPINES coach James David Fraser felt his side have accomplished what they had set out to do despite not qualifying for the semi-finals of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy tournament.
The coach said that sole purpose for participating in the competition was to help develop his young squad.
“I think the tournament has been an achievement because we came here to mould a young team together and we’ve been able to do that. It’s been successful and we’ve learnt a lot,” he said during the post-match press conference following their 3-1 win over Timor Leste last night.
“The boys have good experience at an international level now and that’s not easy to get.
“They’ve played tough games and that’s what you want to do, so overall I’m happy with the development of the squad… It’s about development,” David Fraser emphasised at the Berakas Sports Complex.
He admitted they would have loved to pick up the early points but that will be something his players will have to remember for their upcoming tournaments.
Philippines managed to pull through against Timor Leste with three of their players – Amani Aguinaldo, Daisuke Sato and Jose Porteria – on the bench due to previous offences.
“Look we had three of our best players out on cards. The boys that we put in stepped up and I think they did really well. Overall I’m happy but there are still things we need to work on obviously,” said David Fraser.
“We’re a young team and we haven’t been together for a long time, so we’re getting better as the tournament goes on but unfortunately we lost the early points, so now we’re going to miss the semi-finals,” he said.
Timor Leste coach Koga Takuma confessed his side tried all they could but weren’t on the same level as the Philippines.
“We tried to do our best but unfortunately our mentality and physical aspect are still not good enough,” said Koga.
“They must understand how to read the game... today was not clear for us. Even though it wasn’t clear for us we have to accept it and just play.
“It is a disappointment but at the same time it’s good for us,” said Koga.

Philippines romp to first victory

Saturday, August 16, 2014
PHILIPPINES gunned down Timor Leste 3-1 to pick up their first win in Group A of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy competition last night.
Kenshiro Michael Lontok Daniels slotted in their first of three goals after his header sailed over Francisco Ronaldo Exposto Gusmao in the 35th minute.
They doubled their lead when Kenshiro’s through ball into the box connected with Jaime Vicenzo Duclayan Cheng who made a quick side step before planting his shot into the back of the net in the 48th minute.
Timor Leste pulled one back in the 59th minute, Marcos Morais Guasmao firing the ball into the back of the net after capitalising on a fumble by Philippines goalkeeper Patrick Phillip Bravo Deyto.

Kennedy Uzoka scored the final goal for the Philippines after heading in a Dominic Liam Del Rosario corner in the 86th minute.
The Azkals sit in third in the group table with four points from three games but they can no longer contend for a semi-finals spot.
The semis berths belong to Thailand and Myanmar, currently in first and second with nine points each but the latter have a game in hand.
Timor Leste started the game on the right foot, creating a number of chances at goal at the Berakas Sports Complex.
Their best opportunity in the early stages of the game came when Nataniel De Jesus Reis got onto the ball in the box before firing straight into the body of goalkeeper Patrick in the 6th minute.
The momentum soon changed, as the Philippines started to close in on their offensive play.
They were sending in numerous shots but none really threatened as they kept firing off target.
Timor Leste eventually got back into rhythm but the Philippines goalkeeper would clear the ball every time they encroached on his territory.

Both sides picked up their offensive play, leading to Kenshiro’s opening goal.

The goal didn’t faze Timor Leste as they continued to press, which almost saw Rufino Walter Gama equalise but his header missed by inches in the 44th minute.
The Philippines played with more urgency in the second half, culminated by Jaime’s goal in the 48th minute.
Timor Leste missed out on a great opportunity to bring themselves back into the game after unmarked Henrique Wilson DA C Martin saw his shot scrape by the left post in the 50th minute.
They continued to send in more punishing strikes and eventually scored their sole goal of the game.

Timor Leste hunted desperately for an equaliser, their best chance came when Henrique made a solo run into the box before pelting the ball into Patrick’s chest in the 65th minute.
Their hopes of salvaging a draw came to an end when Kennedy put the game out of reach in the 86th minute.

Thais bounce back with Azkals win

Monday, August 11, 2014
THAILAND outplayed the Philippines 2-0 to pick up their first win from two games in the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy competition last night.
Thailand were in control for a majority of the second half and switched gears in the 54th minute when Supravee Miprathang sent in a cross to Santipharp Channgom who pelted the ball only to see it ricochet off the woodworks.
It was a huge morale booster for Thailand as they continued to send in wave after wave of attacks in the Group A clash at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex in Berakas.
Their efforts paid off in the 58th minute when Supravee sent in a low cross to Chenrop Samphaodi who fired his attempt into the back of the net.
Thailand’s Chaowat Veerachat put the match out of reach for the Azkals by being at the right place at the right time to tap in Nopphon Phonkam’s deflection off Philippines goalkeeper Patrick Deyto during injury time.
No one could have predicted the scoreline following an evenly matched first half.
Numerous opportunities at goal came about at both ends of the field but neither could find the finishing touch to take the lead.
Philippines had the first chance at goal when Jose Porteria sent in a screamer off a deflection but goalkeeper Peerapong Ruennin managed to get his hand to the ball.
Moments later, Thailand replied with a free kick that flew just wide of the top post from the corner of the penalty box.
Thailand’s best opportunity in the first half came when Supravee’s free kick landed in front of Patipan Unop who tried to tap it in but was quickly denied by Deyto in the 21st minute.
Philippines replied with a near miss of their own when Paolo Salenga got the ball in the box and fired it on goal but Anusit Termee’s athleticism saw him make the short dive to punch the ball out in the 24th minute.
Thailand’s Patipan Pinsermsootsri missed an easy touch in front of the goal when Santipharp pulled a cross past Deyto in the 30th minute.
Jose had the last chance of the first half when he sent in a screamer from 10m out of the penalty box, which saw Peerapong make a low dive to the right post to knock it out in the 42nd minute.
The momentum would swing in Thailand’s favour at the restart.
The eventual victors started to force in opportunitie.
Pinsermsootsri saw his attempt in the 47th minute fly just wide of the post.
Their opening goal scorer, Chenrop, was eventually brought into the game in the 56th minute, two minutes before he put Thailand up 1-0.
Pinsermsootsri came close to making it 2-0 when he found himself in a one on one situation with Deyto who rushed out of his box to shut him down.
Philippines had one last chance to equalise before Chaowat’s goal but Kenshiro Daniel’s attempt swung wide of the post in the 89th minute.

Phl U-21 Azkals yield to Thailand

By Olmin Leyba
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Under-21 football team absorbed a 0-2 setback to Thailand Under-19 side Sunday night in the fifth Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) at Balapan Track and Field in Berakas, Brunei.
Chenrop Samphaodi blasted it home in the 58th minute while Chaowat Veerachat connected in injury time as the Thais rebounded from their previous 2-3 setback to Myanmar U-19 for three points in Group A.
The Filipinos remained with one point after their 2-2 draw with Laos U-21 Friday.
“I would have liked a couple of goals. Our finishing is not right but apart from that, I’m not disappointed,” Phl coach Jim Fraser was quoted by the Brunei Times.
“I always try to look at the game and not just the score… The score, we got beat but the game for us was good,” he added.
The U-21 Azkals engaged the U-19 Thais in a tight contest in the first half and got scoring chances through Azkal OJ Porteria and Paolo Salenga. But the Thais cranked it up in the last 45 minutes and took command.
“(In the) Second half we dropped off a bit…Thailand is a very good team. They are well organized, coached and disciplined. They took their chances when they got it, we had to press forward and they got the second goal but I thought it was a really good game, it was hard,” said Fraser.
Chenrop cashed in on the low cross by Supravee Miprathang  to break the scoreless tie in the 58th.
Phl got in a position to equalize in the 89th but Kenshiro Daniel fired it wide off the post.
The Thais struck again at the fourth minute of stoppage time, with Chaowat tapping it home after Nopphon Phonkam’s shot was deflected by Phl keeper Patrick Deyto.
Meanwhile, Myanmar trounced Timor Leste, 3-1, to chalk up their second consecutive win and six points.

TEN-man Laos converted a penalty late in injury time for a 2-2 draw against the Philippines in Group A of the 5th Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy last night at the Berakas Sports Complex.

Laos were down to 10 men early in the first half after Sitthideth Khanthavong was shown a red card in the 18th minute.

The Philippines finally broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute courtesy of Jose Elmer Porteria in the 42nd minute for a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Tiny Bounmalay equalised for Laos in the 74th minute but the Filipinos stuck their noses in front again just two minutes later via Jason Nicolas Maria Dantes de Jong.

Laos stole a point from the game with Ketsada Souksavanh scoring from the spot just before the final whistle.
