Cebuanas turn down offer to join RP futsal squad

Monday, June 11, 2012
LOCAL lady booters decided to forego the offer to join the national futsal team to give way to other commitments.
Rookie players Angeli Ruete, Evonnie Urtal and Christine Mantos weighed their options
and decided to skip the training pool.
The three were teammates in the University of San Carlos futsal team, which finished runner-up to the national team-powered National Capital Region in the Philippine National Games in Dumaguete.
National team coach Esmaeil Sedigh offered them the chance to join the team after seeing them play in that final match.
Ruete, the only student of the three, has school on top of her priorities and has no plans of quitting as of the moment.
“Nakahuhuna-huna na gyud ko mudecline sa pagkakaron kay if ever muapil ko kay maundang man kog skwela. Sayang sad ba,” said Ruete.
The players will have to be based in Manila and train for three months to prepare for a friendly match against Japan in August.
The parents of the 19-year-old civil engineering student also supported her decision, saying that she can pursue these plans to be in the national team after graduating. “I will decline the offer but I plan to try out for the team after I graduate. A lot of players in the national team are in their early 20s so I still have a chance,” said Ruete.
Urtal is tied up with work commitments in a customer service company. Mantos decided to stay home. Both Urtal and Mantos were the reinforcements of USC Ladies futsal team in the PNG.

Rising Sun beats sister team Burning Sun to rule Futsal Cup; Chico United wins women’s title

RISING Sun and Chico United ruled the Cebu leg of the Philippine Futsal Cup Winners Cup yesterday at Metrosports,Lahug.

The all-Japanese team Rising Sun beat sister team Burning Sun, 5-3, on penalties to rule the men’s division, while the Cagayan de Oro-based Chico United overpowered Don Bosco Football Club, 3-1, to rule the women’s open.

Both teams qualified to the national finals in November where they will face winners of the other legs.

However, Rising Sun member Hayato Ayabe said they may not be able to send their team to the national finals because of lack of funds and will instead form a selection team of Cebu-based players, to be led by the champion team, for the nationals.

In the elimination round, despite not having a designated goalkeeper, Rising Sun finished undefeated with a 3-1 win over Boys Home and a 6-1 rout over Joker’s Arms.

On the other hand, the Burning Sun, which like the Rising Sun are manned by players of the Japanese-owned Crazy Horse Club, beat Cebu Eagles, 3-1, and LO, 7-1.

The seventh leg of the year-long futsal tournament gathered 12 teams in the men’s division, including new teams LO, NCR and Homeboys, manned mostly by players from the BPO industry, and six teams in the women’s.

For this tournament, local organizer Chris Oon modified the rules to avoid automatic elimination for the lowest ranked teams in the group.

All the teams who finished at the bottom played in a plate semis, which were considered wildcard matches.

Oon also encouraged the BPO teams to join the men’s open 11-a-side tournaments aside from the futsal tournament to boost their team.

“It would be a good experience for them to play with the other teams,” said Oon, who is also planning to organize a BPO football tournament.

Cebu Futsal - Villaflor: Kicking under one roof

By Noel S. Villaflor

THREE floors below ground where the air would have been twice as thick if not for three man-sized exhaust fans working round the clock, 10 pairs of small feet scurry about on a rubberized court.

On the sidelines looms the coach, a middle-aged man, arms crossed, skin baked for years under the soccer sun, barking instructions to either side.

Pass the ball. Stop dribbling. Find an opening. Nice shot. Play on.

The indoor game swings back and forth. There’s no time to catch one’s breath. The boys sprint back to defense, as the girls try to catch them off guard.
