ASEAN Women`s U16 Championship - 0-14 against Australia

YANGON (10 Oct 2009) – Australia and Vietnam, clearly the two strongest teams in Group B, cruised through their opening AFF Under-16 Women’s Championship matches today, resoundingly beating the Philippines and Myanmar B, at the Aung San Stadium here. The Aussies, the pre-tournament favourites, walked away with a comfortable 14-0 win while Vietnam celebrated a well deserved 5-0 victory today.Today’s result moved the two winners a step closer to the semifinals while Myanmar B and the Philippines have to win their next group matches to remain in contention. Australia’s huge victory, buoyed by four goals from substitute Caitlin Friend, was the second biggest scoreline in the tournament. Myanmar A and Thailand had scored similar 15-0 wins over their rivals the previous day.

In the second match, Australia proved too strong for the Philippines. Their physical advantage aside, the Aussies displayed exceptional skill and maturity in their game to brush aside the hardworking Filipinas. To their credit, Philippines goalkeeper Inna Palacios and defenders Dominique Scott and Marie Navea-Huff turned away numerous attempts, especially in the first half, limiting the Aussies to six goals.Australia got the show off the ground with an eighth minute opener from Teigen Allen. Heidi Makrillos followed up with two quick goals, in the 13th and 15th minutes while Samantha Kerr made 4-0 in the 39th minute. Alanna Kennedy and Caitlin Friend made it 6-0 in the last three minutes of the first half.It was Australia again in the second half with eight more goals – Ashlee Faul (56th), Alanna Kennedy (61st, 90th), Teigen Allen (70th), Caitlin Friend (74th, 79th, 81st) and Brittany Whitfield.

Visayas Selection vs Manila XI Womens U16 in Bacolod in September

THE Philippine Football Federation (PFF) confirmed last weekend that preparations are underway for the holding of a series of competitions between a Visayas Selection and a Manila Selection in Bacolod City in September.
The goodwill matches between the Manila-based lady booters and their Visayas counterparts composed of standouts from Bacolod, San Carlos, Iloilo, Dumaguete and Cebu, among others, will be used by the PFF as a basis for the formation of the national women’s Under-16 team which will represent the country international and regional competitions.

This developed as EVFC president Junie Martin told sports mediamen last Friday during a press conference at the Luxur Hotel that they have challenged the PFF leadership to give equal opportunities for booters who are Manila-based as well as talents from the provinces to showcase their skills whenever the PFF is in the process of forming the composition of the various national teams.

“We’ve always believed that there are enough talents in the provinces, especially in the so-called football region of the Visayas who deserve to be named to the national teams if only they are given the right opportunity to showcase their skills. So, we’ve asked them (PFF) to allow our players (the Visayas Selection) to play against a Manila Selection in September, and whichever team prevails will be given the opportunity to form the women’s national U16 team, and they (PFF) agreed,” said Lizares.

During last Friday’s press conference, PFF president Jose Mari Martinez also lauded the efforts of EVFC in hosting the festival. “We believe there is so much football stakeholders of women’s football in this part of the country can do for the development of the game and the PFF recognizes these efforts as a big boost to the goals of PFF in this regard,” Martinez said.
