Jose Montelibano scores equalizer in injury time as La Salle booters escape with draw vs UST

LA Salle and University of Santo Tomas settled for a point apiece in the UAAP Season 79 men's football tournament as the two teams battled to a 2-2 draw on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Jose Montelibano scored in injury time of the second half to deny the Tigers of their second win in the tournament.
The Green Archers had to storm back twice in the game after Jayson Rafol scored on opposite halves for the Tigers.
Rafol scored his first goal in the 25th minute after La Salle failed to clear the ball off the free kick.
Marcus Garcia equalized 11 minutes later before Rafol once again put the Tigers ahead in the 50th minute of the game.
The Tigers looked poised to take all three points after that but Montelibano had other plans as he scored off a rebound in his own shot to salvage at least a point for his team.
The draw allowed UST to stay within the top four with seven points as La Salle stayed at fifth with six.

Veteran Aly Borromeo looks forward to national football league

THE inaugural season of the Philippines Football League (PFL) kicks off this summer and one player looking forward to it is veteran Aly Borromeo, seeing how the league could potentially further the development of the sport in the country.

Currently playing for Kaya Futbol Club, Mr. Borromeo and his team will be among those competing in the PFL, which will serve as the country’s national football league.

The league, under the auspices of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), is envisioned to make football development more far-ranging and grassroots as possible with teams representing different regions in the country.

In its first year, the PFL hopes to have at least eight teams in its rosters of teams.

“I’m looking forward to the start of the PFL in April. We are currently preparing for it. It has a new format and we are set to go to different places and I’m excited playing in it,” said Mr. Borromeo in a recent interview with BusinessWorld.

The 33-year-old Borromeo, who was a former member of the Philippine men’s national football team, or “Azkals,” went on to say that the PFL has a lot of potential in promoting the sport and sustaining the renewed interest in football in the Philippines.

“I’m excited for the fans as well as they get to see the different teams competing. They get to see their favorite players playing for their home team,” Mr. Borromeo said.

“The PFL can also help in sustaining what the Azkals have achieved as far as creating interest in football, sustaining it and gaining for the sport new fans,” he added.

MAKATI, REPRESENT
In the PFL, Kaya will be representing Makati City and will have the University of Makati (UMak) Stadium as its home field.

“We used to play at UMak five years ago. I think it is great to be going back there and getting the same vibe again,” he said.

As for the kind of team they will be having in the PFL, Mr. Borromeo said fans should expect Kaya going all out each time they take the field.

“We’re not the strongest of teams but we always take pride in playing hard as a team and showing a lot of heart whenever we play,” he said.

But while Mr. Borromeo expressed excitement over the setting up of the PFL, he also said that he hopes the United Football League (UFL), where teams now in the PFL used to play, would not be totally eliminated from the football picture in the country.

“The UFL was a great stepping for the setting up of the PFL. We were part of it (UFL) for the longest time and had greatest memories in it and hopefully it doesn’t totally go away. Maybe it could still go on as a complement to the PFL,” said Mr. Borromeo.

Apart from Kaya, clubs also set to see action in the inaugural PFL include Ceres-Negros FC (Bacolod), Global Queen City (Cebu City), Loyola Meralco Sparks (Taguig) and Stallion-Laguna (Biñan). -- Michael Angelo S. Murillo

Ceres edge over Rovers at home expected

By Henry G. Double

CERES Negros FC, after drawing with Ha Noi FC one-all, is now focusing on taking their game a level higher as they face Singapore’s Tampines Rovers on March 7 at the Paanad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City. Ceres FC edged Rovers, 2-1 in their face-off at the Panaad Stadium last year, but the Singapore side currently leads the group after its 2-1 victory over Felda of Malaysia and their morale is high, looking forward for another strong game. The Negros Occidental-based club draw with Ha Noi FC Tuesday night in the AFC Cup Group G opener at the My Dinh National Stadium defying the 2,600-crowd in Vietnam. The Risto Vidakovic-mentored Busmen came out prepared forcing the host to a scoreless draw in the first 45 minutes of the game. Bienvenido Marañon finally broke the deadlock with a 49th minute goal as the adopted son of Negros province scored on a rebound play after Hanoi goalkeeper Phi Minh Long blocked Manuel Herrera's header. Ha Noi didn’t disappoint their fans as Nguyen Van Quyet equalized in the 57th minute with an acrobatic scissor-kick past Ceres FC keeper Rolando Muller. Ha Noi took control of the entire game with a 68-32 percent ball possession, but Ceres Negros held on with an 18-13 on ball interceptions. Starters for the Ceres FC were keeper Muller, defenders Manuel Lopez, Carli de Murga, Jeffrey Christiaens and Junior Munoz; midfielders Marañon, Kevin Ingreso, Iain Ramsay, and Martin Pineda Steuble; and forwards Manuel Ott and Fernando Ortega. Meanwhile, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has been working double time to ensure that the staging of the home games will be in place particularly the security management at the stadium. The LOC is expected to announce the availability of the tickets next week as Negrense fans have long been waiting for another home match for the Ceres Negros FC which can gather nearly 10,000 fans at the Panaad Park and Stadium.

They are also in the process of securing Filipino passports to be eligible for the squad.
The Azkals are bracketed in Group F of the third round of the 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers, along with Nepal, Yemen and Tajikistan.

Global looks to build on winning AFC Cup start

CHAMPION Philippine club Global FC got its 2017 AFC Cup campaign to a good start, topping Myanmar’s Mangwe FC, 1-0, in their opening Group F play on Tuesday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, something it hopes to use as a springboard to a solid bid in Asia’s secondary club football tournament hosted by the Asian Football Confederation.

Started slow in the match, Global eventually broke through before the opening half came to a close, with skipper Misagh Bahadoran finding the net off a fine cross from teammate Matthew Hartmann in the 39th minute to go up, 1-0.

Boosted by its strong finish in the first half, “The People’s Club,” as Global is referred to, continued to take it to Mangwe, getting into scoring position a couple of times but was not able to convert.

But Mr. Bahadoran’s opening-half goal proved to be enough to secure the win for Global, a double winner last year at the United Football League, and earn its first three points in the tournament’s group play.

New defender signing Wesley Santos from Brazil was named man of the match for his match-long defensive brilliance, and the Brazilian was happy to help the team to the win in his Global debut.

“My first match was difficult. But I’m happy we got the win and the three points,” said Mr. Santos through a translator in the postmatch press conference.

For Global coach Toshiaki Imai, while they welcome the win, he said they still need to fine-tune their game to achieve their best as a team.

“I saw in today’s game that some of our players have to improve on their conditioning. We also have to stay aggressive and step up our defense and counter-attacking. We will continue to work and be ready,” said Mr. Imai, himself new to the team having joined it only last month.

Global next plays away on March 7 against Boeung Key Ankor of Cambodia before traveling to Malaysia a week later for another away match versus Johor Darul Ta’zim.

Meanwhile, another Philippine club, Ceres-Negros FC, managed to notch a point after holding host team Ha Noi FC to a 1-1 draw in their opening AFC Cup Group G encounter also on Tuesday night.

Forward Bienvenido Maranon scored for the “Busmen” in the 49th minute to help his team to the lead only to be answered by Ha Noi midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet in the 57th minute to force a tie which held the rest of the way.

Global ready for Magwe test

By Kevin Estrada

MANILA -- Global are looking to use their AFC Champions League experience to the hilt for their AFC Cup opener tonorrow vs Myanmar's Magwe when they met the press earlier today.

Manager Toshiaki Imai and club captain Misagh Bahadoran expressed not just excitement, but also concerns in starting their second stint in the AFC Cup which will kick off tomorrow at 7:30 in the evening at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

For the Japanese tactician, there are some concerns regarding their team system, since they came from a three week breather after their ACL campaign was crushed by A-League's Brisbane Roar

However, Bahadoran assures his mentor that they will give them a good game against the neophytes of the tournament, whose young squad gave them the Aung San Shield last year.

"We don't go to the game without confidence," the striker said, adding that the ACL experience will hopefully help them became a better team in their group which includes 2015 titlists Johor Darul Ta'zim.

"We learn so many things in the AFC Champions League, we bring those mistakes and hopefully we can fix them," Bahadoran quoted.

TOUGH HANOI CHALLENGE AHEAD FOR CERES

ceres hanoi risto martin gonzalo
Ceres-Negros FC will face the highest ranked club in Group G of the AFC Cup in Hanoi FC. The 2016 V.League 1 champions have been in the cross-hairs of Ceres Coach Risto Vidakovic for some time now and he expects a tough match against the home team.
“I think I saw 5 or 6 games, practically all the games they played in this season
so I think its a very strong team especially because they started the league already. Maybe its a small advantage for them because they (Hanoi) played in a lot of competition games and we didn’t play any games, only the tune up games. They have a lot of players, Gonzalo is a very good player and Quang Hai also is a very good player,” said the Ceres mentor.
“I think for me the must important thing for me is the motivation of the players. For me the formation is not so important so I think I expect form my players that they give a hundred percent tomorrow,” added the Ceres coach when asked about the teams strategy.
Ceres co-Captain Martin Steuble has played in the My Dinh Stadium in the AFF Cup and the Philippine International relishes his return on a different level. “It’s the first time after coming back from 2014. So Its nice to, its nice to be back here and compete on club level representing the still the Philippines and Ceres-Negros, the whole region. We’re excited for the game like the coach said and I’m sure that all the players will give their one hundred percent even its our fist game in competition. We hope to give them a good game and compete with Hanoi,” said the Ceres midfielder.
The match versus Hanoi will kickoff at 7PM Philippine time and will be broadcasted live over cable channel Fox Sports 2

Biantan: Davao Aguilas vow to build a strong team

By Jack Biantan

THE lone representative of the Land of Promise to the Philippine Football League (PFL), the Davao Aguilas will have a strong team when the league opens on April 22. Davao Aguilas chief executive officer Chito Manuel said that tryouts for aspiring young professional footballers from Mindanao had already started at their home field, the Tagum Sports Stadium in Tagum, Davao del Norte. Although he admits that everything is "rush-rush" now, Manuel said the team’s head coach Melchor Anzures and assistant coach Lalas Carreon are busy building up the team from scratch. They are also conducting tryouts today at the Agro pitch in Davao City. Manuel said the Aguilas have the support of the Davao del Norte Regional FA and the Davao City FA. Manuel also added that they will field in an All-Filipino team and vowed that they will get the best talents from Mindanao. “Our all-Pinoy team will not allow us to become whipping boys in the league,” Manuel said. It will be a tall order for the Davao Aguilas against the top clubs like Global, Stallions, Ceres, and Loyola Meralco, in the PFL. With less than two months to go before kick-off, coach Anzures and the team management obviously face great challenges. But life in Mindanao is always full of challenges. Let’s just enjoy the ride and welcome the entry of the Davao Aguilas to the PFL. Let us also hope that they will fly high and succeed.

Women’s Championship 2017 cancelled

The 2017 edition of the AFF Women’s Championship has been called off following the 9th meeting of the AFF Council for the session 2015/2019.
It was felt that since 2017 already have several major women’s tournaments, having another at the ASEAN level meet would defeat the purpose and lead to unnecessary use of funds.

There will also be the SEA Games 2017 which will see the senior teams from around the region taking part in the tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
At the same time too, following the decision for withdrawal, Indonesia have decided to take part in the first ever AFF U15 Girls’ Championship to be held in Vientiane, Laos on 8-20 May.
Following Indonesia’s participation, the tournament will now see ten teams divided into two groups doing battle.
Brunei have also decided to take part in the AFF Invitational Futsal Club Championship while New Zealand will be the invited guest for the AFF U18 Championship.
Official draws were also conducted today to decide on the match-ups of the various competitions.

Kaya FC–Makati bolsters 2017 squad with more signings

Kaya FC–Makati adds more players to the squad with the addition of Jordan Mintah, Jalsor Soriano, Jayson Panhay, Patrik Franksson, and Marvin Angeles. As we stay true to our commitment to strengthening our squad, we are pleased to introduce our new reinforcements before we begin our first-ever national league campaign. They are a welcome addition to the growing Kaya family as we prepare for what promises to be an unforgettable campaign.
Jordan Mintah, from Kumasi, Ghana, started his football career in the Philippines with Stallion FC in 2014. Prior to moving to the Philippines, he successfully established and developed his career in Ghana at an early age, when he played for Ajax Academy in 2002. He also played for different clubs in Ghana—Volta Warriors (2006–2009), Kessben (2009–2011), and New Generation (2012–2013). He was due to join Kaya last season, but because there was no transfer window, the Ghanaian forward will finally make his Kaya debut this year in the upcoming Philippines Football League (PFL).
“Kaya is the best football team in the country, and I feel honored to be a part of this wonderful Kaya family. I am going to work hard and give out my best as a Kaya player to help the team win a lot of trophies. Again, I am looking forward to winning a lot of trophies with Kaya and to also qualify to play in the AFC Cup, which will be a dream come true for me and the entire wonderful Kaya family,” Jordan says.
Jalsor Soriano, from Negros Occidental, Philippines, may ring a bell because of his last name. The Talisay-born defender is the brother of Kaya player Janrick Soriano, and both learned to play football at an early age. In 2012, Jalsor kicked off his football career in Manila, when he played in the United Football League (UFL) with Pachanga Diliman, alongside Janrick. Eventually, he joined other UFL teams—Pasargad and Ceres-La Salle.
“I’m excited to play for my new team, my new family, Kaya FC! Masaya ako ngayon sa bago kong team, at nagpapasalamat ako sa Kaya FC sa binigay nilang tiwala sa akin,” Jalsor says.
The Soriano brothers expressed their sheer joy about being teammates again, and likewise, we are delighted with their reunion and their hunger to succeed at Kaya.
“Masaya ako na magkakasama kami ulit ngayon ni Janrick, at sa Kaya FC pa!”
Likewise, his brother and now teammate (again) Janrick felt the same way. “Super saya ko kasi naging teammate ko siya ulit, tapos magkasundo din kami sa loob ng field at sa lahat ng bagay. At kung ano man ang mali namin sa loob ng field, pinaguusapan naming dalawa para maging OK.”
Janrick even has a special message for Jalsor: “Message ko sa kanya, sana maging masaya siya sa bagong team niya. Alam ko naman na magiging masaya siya, at alam ko naman na gagawin niya ang best niya sa loob ng field kasi magkasama na kami ulit maglalaro.”
Jayson Panhay, from Negros Occidental, Philippines, had been playing for Ceres-Negros since 2012. The winger from San Carlos had notable achievements with his team during his time at Ceres—PFF Smart Club champions, UFL Division 2 champions, and UFL Division 1 champions, to name a few. We are delighted with his signing, and we hope he will demonstrate the same passion and loyalty in the upcoming national league and beyond.
“All I can say about Kaya FC is they’re very professional, and I’m very happy to be part of this club. I am looking forward to more games and more exciting wins with this club,” Jayson says.
Patrik Franksson, born and raised in Sweden, moved to the Philippines, where his Filipino roots can be traced all the way to Tacloban, in 2013. He started his youth football career in Sweden with Kode IF in 2001 and successfully joined and played for their senior team in Division 4 Göteborg A from 2010 until 2013. He continued his football career in the Philippines in 2013, when he joined Laos FC in the second division of the UFL. Laos had their first major success in the UFL when they were crowned the UFL Division 2 champions with an unbeaten record, consequently promoting the club to the first division.
The Swedish Filipino striker now plays for Kaya and gave us some thoughts on being part of the Kaya family, what he can contribute, and what he looks forward to.
“I’m very excited to start this journey with Kaya! It’s a very professional and organized club, and it shows all the way from the academy to the first team. They have a long history in Philippine football, and I can’t wait to experience what Kaya stands for and what it’s all about. The team and the management are great. Everyone seems to get along with each other both on and off the field. I think that’s important if you want a successful team just like Kaya.”
“[I think I’m] a different kind of striker. I’m not the biggest or the strongest striker, so I use more of my speed to cut and run behind or open up spaces. And hopefully my main contribution will be goals, of course.”
“[I want to] grow as a player and try to reach my full potential … I know I have a lot to work on and a lot to learn. The players, staff, and management, especially Coach Chris, have helped me a lot already, so I’m sure I’m in good hands and will get the right kind of training and support to reach my goals. And also, of course, to win the league!”
Marvin Angeles, born in Venice, Italy, is the twin brother of Marwin Angeles, who was also recently signed by Kaya FC. When he was seven years old, he joined Alvisiana Team in Venice. At 14 years old, like Marwin, he played for AC Venezia and started his youth football career. He later moved to the Philippines and made his UFL debut with Laos FC in August 2011 and joined Global FC in 2012. Prior to joining Kaya, he played for Ceres-La Salle and participated in international tournaments—the now-defunct President’s Cup, Singapore Cup, and AFC Cup. In addition, he was first called up to play for the Philippine national football team when he became part of the 24-man squad at their training camp in the United States in August 2012. Moreover, alongside Marwin, he represented the Philippines at the U21, U22, and U23 levels in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) and 2012 Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy.
“It feels great to be part of the Kaya family because they have good organization, starting from the first team till the youth. It’s a very ambitious and professional club too. I talked to Paul and Chris, and both want to win something this season. I already met the Kaya players, and they are all good guys,” Marvin shares.
“I think I can bring a little bit of my experience to the younger players and try to help the team in any situation as I can play different positions. I want to help the club reach their goals, but especially for myself, I want to gain back my confidence and win something this season.”

Jermiah Borlongan brace powers University of the Philippines past National U in UAAP football

JERMIAH Borlongan netted a brace as University of the Philippines ripped National University, 4-0, in the UAAP football tournament Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The second year midfielder completed the brace in a span of five minutes as the Maroons improved to seven points.
Borlongan scored in the 23rd and 27th minutes to create separation from the struggling Bulldogs.
Kintaro Miyagi and James Paul Condat came up with the finishing touches for the defending champions.
Miyagi scored in the 49th minute for his second goal of the season, while Condat completely shut the door on NU with a 77th minute goal.
A loss or a tie for Ateneo, which is playing UST as of writing time, means UP stays at the top of the table.
The Bulldogs on the other hand remained at the bottom half of the table with one point.

La Salle downs University of the East for first win after opening-day draw in UAAP football

YOSHIHARU Koizumi scored on a free kick in the 17th minute to power La Salle to a 2-0 victory over University of the East in the UAAP football tournament on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

An erratic second half for the boys of coach Hans Smit almost allowed UE to get back into the match, the Warriors repeatedly testing the La Salle defense.
An own goal, however, deflated the hopes of a late stunner for the Red Warriors.
Noel Brago's free kick was deflected by UE fullback Rino Saldivar and into the back of their own net in the 79th.
The Green Booters improved to four points in their second game following an opening-day draw with University of the Philippines.

‘Stadia to spur LGU growth’

Local government units should seriously consider putting up football or soccer stadiums in their areas to help spur their economic growth, one of the country’s top economists said Thursday.
Dr. Bernardo M. Villegas, also a professor and senior vice president at the University of Asia and the Pacific, said the stadia could act as “anchors of real estate development and commercial activity.”
“That’s true in practically all countries in Europe, and we’re surrounded by it in Asia,” said the economist, who also launched a book, “Philippine Football: Its Past, Its Future” yesterday at the Amici restaurant in Mandaluyong City.
“One of our objectives is to work with a lot of LGUs and convince them that investing in a good, modern football stadium is going to be good for their town, even in terms of commercial establishments,” added Villegas, who is advising a task force to promote the upcoming Philippine Football League set to launch in April this year.
He cited the Emperador Stadium in Taguig City and the Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna province as stadia acting as hubs for the developments around them.
“Because some stadia can be built, and around it could be real estate products and commercial stalls, just like in Spain,” Villegas said. “LGU heads like mayors should also see that people in their community would appreciate their spending on the stadium.”
The Philippines currently has 23 football stadia, the biggest of which is the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan with a seating capacity of 25,000. But most arenas, like the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila often used by national football teams, are old and in dire need of renovation.
The Biñan stadium cited by Villegas can sit 2,000 and cost P320 million, but the economist said LGUs should not mind such a huge expense. “There’s evidence that football is a very profitable sport for investing,” he said.

FIFA Rankings: Philippines in holding pattern

The Philippines have remained in 122nd position in the latest release of the FIFA Rankings.

The Azkals remain the top football side in the ASEAN conference. This is despite their disappointing showing at the AFF Suzuki Cup in November – in which they were co-hosts – as they failed to make it past the group stage.
Thailand fall one place to 127th, even though they claimed their fifth AFF Suzuki Cup title.
Vietnam, AFF Suzuki Cup semi-finalists, hold onto 136th spot while Hong Kong are down two places to 142nd.
At the top of the AFC conference is Iran in 32nd, followed by South Korea in 39th and Japan in 52nd position.

Overall, the top five nations in world football remain the same, with Argentina leading Brazil, Germany, Chile and Belgium.
