AFFU18Womens: Foraging a new future for women’s football

PALEMBANG (21 July 2022) – The inaugural AFF Under-18 Women’s Championship 2022 starts tomorrow with the hope of carving a new future for women’s football in the region.

Following from last week’s AFF Women’s Championship 2022 in Manila where hosts Philippines made it a fairy-tale finish when they were installed as the new champions, it is hoped that some of that positive vibes will rub off on these new crops of players.

Young players need competitive matches and the AFF have been one of the most active in promoting and creating a competitive atmosphere for players from the region.

Friendlies vs Costa Rica, NZ in pipeline for Filipinas, says Araneta

 by REUBEN TERRADO

Filipinas set for friendlies

Philippine Football Federation president Mariano "Nonong" Araneta revealed that an invitation from Costa Rica, which like the newly minted AFF champions, will also play in the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup, to play a friendly in their home soil.

Araneta said a friendly against New Zealand is also in the works in a bid to give the Philippines more exposure to different opponents heading into the World Cup.

“We are trying to schedule more games for them against opponents who are higher than us in the rankings,” said Araneta during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum.

“There have been invitations from Costa Rica to play in Costa Rica. They also have qualified in the World Cup in the Concacaf. There is an invitation and we are also trying to arrange, I think there is an arrangement to play against New Zealand. But we don’t know yet where. But it’s going to be before the draw in October. Those are our friendlies that are in the pipeline,” said Araneta.

Araneta said all the friendlies will be held before the draw ceremony for the Fifa Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.

Aside from getting exposure against top-class teams, Araneta explained that the the friendlies will also play a role in the draw for the World Cup.

“Right now, we are in the fourth pot. We just need four or eight points to go to the third pot… Hopefully, we can be in Pot 3 so that we don’t face the heavyweights right away,” said Araneta.

The two nations are ranked higher than the Philippines, currently at 53rd in the world. New Zealand is at No. 22 while Costa Rica is at No. 37.

Head coach Alen Stajcic has already indicated that the Philippines will play in all of the Fifa international windows this year as part of the preparations for the World Cup

Filipinas Trounce Thais To Be Crowned AFF Women’s Championship Queens

The Philippines completed the ascent to the top of the AFF Women’s Championship 2022 last night with a vengeful 3-0 win over Thailand in the final in front of a delighted hometown crowd at the packed Rizal Memorial Stadium

Sporting bright red battle colors and energized by 8,257 noisy local fans, the Filipinas took the fight to the Thais, earning payback for their 0-1 setback in the group stage while bagging the country’s first major international title.

It was the latest laurel for the spirited charges of Australian coach Alen Stajcic, who qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time with their semifinal finish in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup last February and a bronze-medal finish in the 31st Southeast Asian Games last May.

Defender Jessika Cowart bulldozed her way to the front in heading the first goal just seven minutes into the match off a precise right corner kick by skipper Tahnai Annis then Katrina Guillou threaded the needle inside the box in giving the hosts a surprise 2-0 lead at the break.

And, fittingly, it was irrepressible striker Sarina Bolden who hammered the final nail into the Thailand coffin with a header in the 88th minute, before exiting almost immediately to a standing ovation from the crowd.

The margin could have been bigger if not for the goaltending heroics of Thai keeper Chotmanee Thongmongkol, who was kept busy all night by the predatory hosts.

Her Philippine counterpart, Olivia McDaniel, also shared the spotlight and was superb at the net as usual, especially late in the second half when the four-time champions pressed the attack.

Earlier, Myanmar completed dethroned Vietnam’s humiliation with a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 win in taking home the bronze medal.

Scoreless in her previous outings, striker San Thaw Thaw cut loose with a hat trick, including the winning goal in the 88th minute on a follow-up in relegating the Vietnamese to fourth place for one of their most miserable outings in the tournament.

“This win is truly exhilarating. We’ve climbed a little hill tonight; we’ve conquered Southeast Asia but I know they are big mountains ahead. It is a big hill to climb and there are bigger challenges ahead of us,” said Stacjic, the architect of first major international football win for the Philippines.

Setting up the rematch for the hosts was their stirring 4-0 upset of defending champion Vietnam in the semifinals last Friday.

The Filipinas continued their relentless drive in the second half, with veteran forward Quinley Quezada getting a clear shot from the right wing in the 60th minute, but the ball hit the right goal post and was cleared by Thongmongkol.

With the exception of defender Dominique Randle, Stajcic assembled what could be his strongest starting 11 led by skipper Annis, inspirational striker Bolden and veteran defenders Eva Madarang, Sofia Harrison and Hali Long plus Jessica Miclat ant Sara Eggesvik patrolling the midfield.

Filipinas stun defending champ Vietnam to reach AFF Women’s fina

 By:

MANILA, Philippines–The Philippines advanced to the final of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship by pulling off the unthinkable.

Not only did the Filipinas upset defending champion Vietnam before a crowd of 3,233 at Rizal Memorial Stadium, they did so in dominating fashion with a 4-0 victory to set up a title showdown with Thailand.

A festive atmosphere greeted the ladies, who responded with a sublime performance that looked impossible given Vietnam’s status as perhaps the region’s best women’s football team.

Hali Long’s header in the 32nd minute put coach Alen Stajcic’s side ahead, but the floodgates opened in the second half when Tahnai Annis scored from the spot and Sarina Bolden put up a brace.

Continuing the habit of making history since the start of 2022, the World Cup-bound Filipinas hope to wrap up the campaign with a silverware to lift when they face Thailand for the title on Sunday.

Thailand handed the Philippines its only loss of the tournament last Tuesday, when it pounced on a defensive miscue to score the lone goal at the close of the group stage.

That relegated the Filipinas to a runner-up finish in Group A and a date with the crack Vietnamese side, which topped Group B by winning all four matches, scoring 18 and conceding none.

But the hosts were unfazed, and now they’ll have a crack at getting back at the Thais in what could be another magical night at the 88-year old stadium.
