Angeles' late goal forces draw between Kaya Iloilo, PSM Makassar

MANILA—Marwin Angeles saved the best for last as Kaya Iloilo forced a 1-1 draw against PSM Makassar in their AFC Cup match at the Pakansari Stadium in Makassar on Tuesday.

Angeles equalized in stoppage time as Iloilo now holds the top spot after the first round of Group H.

Makassar looked to be on pace of taking the home win after a penalty from Eero Markkanen, the older brother of rising National Basketball Association star Lauri, in the 56th minute gave the club the lead.

However, Jovin Bedic found Angeles wide open in a free kick in the third minute of extension, and the latter slotted the ball in for the tie.

Both clubs are tied at five points after three games, but with Angeles' away goal, Iloilo owns the top spot ahead of their rematch on April 17 at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.

AFC CUP 2019 PREVIEW: CERES-NEGROS VS PERSIJA JAKARTA

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – A top of the table clash is in the cards as Ceres-Negros hosts Indonesian powerhouse Persija Jakarta on April 3 at the Panaad Stadium in Negros Occidental.

The Philippine champions will face an Indonesian team for the first time in history with the visitors eyeing to snatch first place in the group when they visit Bacolod.

Ceres-Negros has been steady on their first two matches after they edged Shan United with a 3-2 victory at home last February 26 and stunned Becamex Bin Duong with a crucial 3-1 victory away in Vietnam.

Bienvenido Maranon’s heads up play which led to the opening goal set the tone for his hat trick made possible by the team’s wonderful performance in both halves.

Persija meanwhile is also unbeaten after goalless draw against Becamex in the Gelora Bung Karno while they are still one-hundred percent in away games after dispatching of Shan United in Yangon after conceding early to secure full three points.

Brazilian midfielder turned striker Bruno Matos headlined the win with two consecutive goals to snatch the life out of Shan while French forward Steven Paulle scored the other for the capital club.

Ceres-Negros is on top of the table with six points followed by Persija who was four points. Persija comes in with better match fitness than Ceres after they concluded their pre-season tournament with a draw last March 28.

The match will also feature national team stars for both squads with Indonesian legends Bambang Pamungkas and Ismed Sofyan traveling to Bacolod together with young playmaker Riko Simanjutnak.

Both teams will face each other in consecutive matchdays with the Jakarta leg set on April 23 at the historic Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in the Indonesian capital.

1 April 2019; Bogor, Indonesia — Kaya FC–Iloilo are looking to solidify their spot as leaders of Group H, as they take on Indonesia’s PSM Makassar on Tuesday afternoon in the AFC Cup. The match will take place in the Pakansari Stadium in Bogor, and will kick off at 3pm local time. Both sides have four points after two outings, with the Filipino club slightly ahead on goal difference.

“I think we all know the importance of tomorrow’s game. The result tomorrow will determine who will be top of the group after the first round of matches. It’s been a long wait for this game — 20 days. We’re excited and looking forward to tomorrow,” said Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida.

“As players we are all looking forward to this game in Indonesia. It would give us a boost if ever we win the game tomorrow. We’ve been training really hard for this game. We know already what to do, so we just need to do our job and try to win the game and bring more confidence for the next games,” said Iloilo midfielder Marwin Angeles.

Both clubs are fresh from impressive goal-filled outings in the AFC Cup. Iloilo dispatched of reigning ASEAN Champions, Home United, with a 5-0 scoreline, while Makassar thumped Lao Toyota 7-3, setting the stage for a potentially explosive encounter.

“Tomorrow, we play against a club with the same points as us. We play against a club with specific qualities. We play at home, and I think based on our qualities, we can bring three points back to Makassar,” said PSM head coach Darije Kalezic. “They are a good, organized team. They keep the space very small when their opponent has ball possession. They make it difficult for their opponents to play within the lines. They are dangerous on the counter attack. We have to be wary of their striker. That they won 5-0 against Home United is not relevant information. We won against seven goals against Lao and we really should’ve scored 20.”

“PSM is one of the oldest clubs in Indonesia. Looking at their AFC roster, they have an obvious height advantage. Tomorrow’s match will be different from our previous games (versus Lao Toyota and Home United). We’ve made plans specifically for tomorrow. They have very technical, skillful, and experienced players so we’re expecting a tough game tomorrow, and we’re ready to accept that challenge,” said Marcaida.

Tomorrow’s match will be aired live on 5Plus (formerly AksyonTV) and on ESPN 5’s online platforms.

Cooper sees great talent for Azkals after Bangkok camp

National football team coach Scott Cooper hailed the Azkals’ low-key training camp in Bangkok, Thailand, as a “massive success,” saying that they’ve identified several prospects for selection for future Under-23 and senior tournaments, particularly 2022 World Cup Qualifying late this year.

While other Southeast Asian nations used the international break to play friendly matches and invitational tournaments, Cooper had 28 players under his wing for a week, giving them time to understand “the style, the philosophy, and culture that we want to build.”

“The camp has been a massive success,” Cooper told the Inquirer. “In a way, we were able to take a look at 15 players that we can tap for the future Under-23, Under-22 and SEA (Southeast Asian) Games and the senior team. But, of course, nobody has been ruled out for selection and we’re just following a careful plan that we’ve got to have the team ready for September (WCQ) and SEA Games.”

Among the players who were invited for the camp were long-time prospect Michael Kempter, Enrique Linares, Diego Bardanca and Jose Carillo.

Kempter, who plays in the Swiss League, has been in the Azkals’ radar for quite some time but suffered an injury that ruled him out of selection for the Asian Cup.

Linares, who plays in the third division in Spain, is the cousin of Azkals defender Alvaro Silva.

The 26-year-old Bardanca, a defender, has the most impressive resumé among the prospects as he currently plays in the second division in Poland. Bardanca is eligible to represent the country because of his Filipino grandmother.

Carillo, a striker, whose great grandfather is Filipino, plays for Cordoba in the Spanish second division.

Only four players based in the Philippines—Silva, Mike Ott, Curt Dizon and Kevin Ingreso—joined the camp.

Thailand-based players Javier Patino, Stephan Palla, Marco Casambre, Mark Hartmann, Amin Nazari and Michael Falkesgaard also linked up with the team along with Malaysia-based Amani Aguinaldo.

“This camp has been quiet, very professional and we built it up slowly,” said Cooper.

Philippine Premier League postponed to April 27

The Philippine Premier League will postpone the launch of the 2019 season to Saturday, April 27. This will allow Mendiola FC 1991 and Philippine Air Force FC to resubmit their documentation for PFF club licensing.

It is hoped that with the additional time the two teams can be granted provisional club licenses that will permit them to join the league this season.
