UFL Finals: Airmen stun favorite Sparks
Update 2 7:39 p.m.) Goalkeeper Edmundo Mercado turned back the hands of time while Ian Araneta and Yanti Barsales knocked in the goals as Philippine Air Force beat highly-favored Loyola Meralco Sparks FC, 2-0, Saturday in the UFL Cup Finals at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Araneta struck a left-booted shot from inside the box in the 38th minute before Barsales notched the insurance goal in the 90th.
But it was Mercado's game-long efforts that secured the Airmen the 2011 UFL Cup. The 37-year-old stopped the Sparks' high-powered offense led by brothers Phil and James Younghusband.
"We want to prove to everyone that Air Force is the number one team in the Philippines," said Mercado, a 13-year national team member who retired in 2008.
"We played basic football. They are big and in terms of skill, they have the edge but we played as a team,” said Air Force head coach Edzel Bracamonte.
After left winger Chieffy Caligdong penetrated inside the box, Araneta was left open and booted the ball home using his left foot to break the scoreless deadlock.
The Sparks could have tied the goal in the 53rd minute after James Younghusband scored a header off a Matt Hartmann corner kick but the head referee disallowed it after the referee wrongly placed the ball in the corner.
Loyola Meralco had another golden chance in the 86th minute but substitute Alex Elnar's header hit the crossbar. Another mad scramble ensued and Elnar again missed the goal by inches after his header once again hit the crossbar.
Phil Younghusband got free in the 87th minute and nearly scored a game-tying goal but Mercado used his feet to save the ball and prevent another point blank attempt from the Sparks.
Barsales scored after stealing the ball at the back from John Paul Merida and flicked his shot from 20 yards out to seal the title win.
The 38-year-old Barsales eventually won the Golden Boot award (Most Valuable Player) while Mercado took home the Golden Glove or the best goalkeeper trophy.

MANILA, Philippines — Air Force Phoenix looks to extend its reign against a Loyola Meralco side seeking to establish itself as a force in the United Football League.
Unbeaten in their run to the finals, the Airmen and Sparks collide for the UFL Cup at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Global and Kaya-Cignal meet in the battle for third place—the first of two matches that will be aired live by AKTV on IBC 13.
The Airmen are in familiar territory, having won the league early this year after finishing second in the Cup competition to Global FC.
Air Force has actually won two of the three titles dangled in the UFL since the league started in 2009.
Aside from winning the Cup, the Airmen are looking to once again prove that their squad built around homegrown talents has what it takes to fend off all challengers, especially those with foreign reinforcements.
“We take a lot of pride on having a team with homegrown players,” said Air Force coach Edzel Bracamonte, whose squad boasts of national team standouts Chieffy Caligdong and Ian Araneta and veteran striker Yanti Barsales.
It will be the first finals appearance for the Sparks, who made the biggest off-season move in the UFL by acquiring brothers Phil and James Younghusband.
With the Younghusband brothers, who spent time with English Premiere League side Chelsea, spearheading their campaign, Loyola has taken the Cup competition by storm.
The Sparks have scored 48 goals and has conceded just seven in six games with Phil Younghusband accounting for 25 goals.
Although they were hardly tested in the group stages, the Sparks showed they are equal to the challenge when their backs are against the wall.
Staring at a 0-3 halftime deficit against Kaya Cignal in the semifinals, the Sparks
completed an improbable 5-4 comeback win with Phil firing a hattrick.
The Sparks will welcome back goalkeeper Ref Cuaresma to the side, but skipper Patrick Ozaeta and Italian midfielder Davide Cortina are ineligible for the finals after picking up consecutive yellow cards in the quarterfinals and the semifinals.
More than the threat posed by Caligdong, Araneta and Barsales, the Sparks will also need to deal with 43-year-old midfielder Jezurel Tonog, whose string of solid performances has also keyed Air Force’s run.
“We have very good individual players but the key for us is to play as a team,” said Bracamonte.

New Zealand turns down friendly vs Azkals

MANILA, Philippines—New Zealand—a qualifier in the 2010 World Cup—has ruled out playing the Philippine Azkals on the next international friendly date on Feb. 29 next year.
Azkals manager Dan Palami last night said the Kiwis have rejected the invitation of the Philippine Football Federation, citing a prior commitment.
With New Zealand begging off, Palami said they will now turn their attention on convincing Malaysia and Vietnam to play in the friendly, which the Azkals are using as part of their preparation for the AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal.
“We are just looking to play higher-ranked teams. Any higher-ranked team will actually do for us,” said Palami.
The Azkals have slated a two-month buildup for the Challenge Cup in Nepal with training camps in the Philippines and in the Gulf region.
A showdown with Spanish third division side CF Madrid in January has also been calendared for the Azkals.
With captain Aly Borromeo sure to miss the Challenge Cup because of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Palami is hoping to have all players available for the March 9 to 19 Challenge Cup.

SOME four years after losing to Malaysia, 4-0, in the AFF Championships, the Philippine national team will get a chance to get even as it is set to take on the Suzuki Cup champions in a friendly match on Feb. 29 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Philippine team manager Dan Palami said the Malaysia game is just one of a series of friendlies the team will have in preparation for the AFC Challenge Cup.
Aside from Malaysia, the team will also have a match against a Spanish third division team and teams in the Gulf nations.
CF Madrid, which plays in Spain, expressed intentions to come over and play the Azkals on Jan. 7 but the national team requested to have it rescheduled since it is too close to Christmas break.
Both camps decided to have the game on Jan. 21 in Rizal Memorial Stadium and that match will be also be televised in Spain.
“This shows the tie between Spain and Philippines is strong and it’s a good opportunity for us to strengthen the relationship,” said Palami.
The Azkals are also scheduled to play against Dubai, Bahrain and Qatar on Feb. 6 to 15.
Palami said the international friendlies were products of the LA Galaxy Game against the Azkals last Dec. 3.
“Many international teams are now showing interest to play here in the country,” Palami said.
The New Zealand All Whites, which made the World Cup in 2010, was supposed to play the Azkals on Feb. 29 but backed out due to a prior commitment.
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) then decided to invite Malaysia instead for the Azkals’ final friendly game before leaving for the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal in March.
In the Challenge Cup, the Philippines will meet North Korea on March 9, India on March 11 and Tajikistan on 13.
North Korea, India and Tajikistan are all previous winners of the Challenge Cup and the Philippines will be missing the services of team skipper and defender Aly Borromeo.
