League gets "home" at McKinley Hill

THE United Football League (UFL) has struck a deal to make as its home the artificial pitch that will be constructed by real-estate giant Megaworld at the McKinley Hill in Taguig City.

Work on the P1.5-billion project has been fast-tracked for the field to be completed by October before the start of the 2012-2013 UFL season. The field’s bleachers section that could accommodate up to a crowd of 2,000 is also expected to be finished before the end of the year.

The UFL welcomed the deal, saying it addresses the league’s problems on the lack of pitches as well as improve the quality of play in the league.

Under the deal, the UFL will have priority on the use of the field for the next four years.

“We’re excited to have a field of our own,” said UFL President Santi Araneta shortly after signing the memorandum of agreement with Megaworld officials at the Genting Place at the Resorts World.

Also signing the deal for the UFL were Marketing Director Javi Mantecon and UFL President Randy Roxas and Megaworld’s Kendrick Tan, CFO Lourdes Torres and SVP Philipps Cando.   

The MOA would be coterminous with the league’s television deal with AKTV, said Araneta. The field, which will be 97x60 meters, is being built to conform with international standards.

“A sign of bigger things to come,” said Roxas. “After the signing, the real work begins.”

The UFL holds most of its big matches at the University of Makati field because of the recent inavailability of the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Several second division games are also held at the Turf as well as at the Nomads Sports Club in Parañaque.

“We are happy to be part of the growth of football in the country,” Tan said, hinting that the McKinley field may not only be the last football-related project that Megaworld will undertake.

“We might be able to put up permanent facilities. This may just be one of the many of the company’s endeavors,” he added.

“We are committed in ensuring the viability of football in the Philippines,” said Jericho Go, Megaworld’s first vice president. “The facility puts us in the right direction.”

Negros-Ceres Still Undefeated in PFF U23 Regional Qualifier

 The undefeated Ceres-University of St. La Salle–manned Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) team is on the roll winning against the visiting Negros Oriental Football Association with a 6-nil victory during their first home game in the ongoing Philippine Football Federation Suzuki Cup U23 regional qualifying at the Manuel Y. Torres Sports Center, Bago City last Saturday.
In the opening half, J Baguiro nailed the first two goals - 4th and 18th minutes - for the Negrenses. Joel Bedia followed a 3rd goal in the 41st minute with four minutes before the halftime whistle blows to end the break.
The visitors tried to work on their offense but NOFA’s defense seemed to be tough enough for NORFA’s offensive plays to convert a point in the second half.
In the 58th minute, Azklas’ U23 standout and last year’s PFF-Suzuki U23 National Cup "Best Striker" Joshua Beloya scored Negros-Ceres’ fourth goal as Archie Familiar added another six minutes later.
With 5-nil advantage, NORFA’s defense slowly died out as Michael Conel sealed the match with the team’s sixth goal in the 77th minute.
Negros-Ceres’ win over NORFA gave them its fifth victory in the ongoing tournament.
On May 7, the Freddie "Nene" Lazarito-mentored Negrense squad will be challenged by the Cebu Football Association in San Carlos City.
Joining Lazarito in the coaching task are Assistant Coaches Ramon Janeo, Ali Rojas Go, Lemuel Unabia, Hemerson Campo, and goalkeeper coach Michael Casas.* (JGToga)

PFF U23 - Davao del Norte 2-3 Compostela Valley

Compostela Valley FA (CVFA) Gold beat Davao del Norte FA (DNFA) Dragons 3-2 yesterday, April 22, 2012 during the U-23 Suzuki Cup Qualifiers held at the Energy Park in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.The neck-to-neck to match was a hard fought one. Erick Giganto of CVFA drew first blood with a goal on the 14th minute. An equalizer was made 8 minutes later by Jonathan Caberto of DNFA. The first half ended with draw of 1-1.

Just a minute after receiving a yellow card, Quer Generoso smoothly scored a goal for CVFA - gaining a golden edge against the Dragons. The latter did not waiver and continued to spur fire as Janel Mera's ball found the back of the net on the 64th minute. Eight minutes after, Erick Giganto once again flashed his golden boot as he scored yet another goal. The game ended with the home team, one goal short of drawing the visiting team. CVFA got 2 yellow cards for this match while DNFA got 1. Compostela Valley Gold's victory proved that the Dragons fire was not strong enough to melt the rock-solid Gold.

More than two thousand spectators braved the intermittent rain just to support the two teams. Among them were the past President of CVFA, Hon. Gov. Arturo Uy; Tyrone Uy, Provincial Sports Coordinator; Engr. Abenir Labja, CVFA President/PFF BOG; Mr. Giovanni Gulanes representing Davao del Norte's Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario; DNFA President Rene Cosmod with its Board and Club Officers and members; Tagum City Mayor Rey T. Uy; First Councilor Hon. De Carlo L. Uy; and Tagum City Tourism Chairperson Madame Alma Uy.

Since it was also the Southern Mindanao Launching of the U-23 Suzuki Cup, top officials and staff of Suzuki including Mr. Satoshi Uchida, the President of Suzuki Philippines; Mr. Shuzo Hoshikura the General Manager for Sales and Marketing; Ms. Ma. Jewela Borromeo the Head for Advertising and Promotions; and Mr. Ramil Mulay the Event Specialist were also present.

Special guests of the occasion were Ian Araneta and Roel Gener of the Philippine Azkals who were preoccupied with signing autographs and posing with avid football fanatics. The Head of the Philippine Football Federation's (PFF) Competitions Department, Mr. Cyril Dofitas and Mr. Erwin Protacio, the U-23 Tournament Director also graced the event with their presence.

Over thirty media men from Southern Mindanao covered the said event.

3 Cebuanas join PHL girls 13 national team

THREE Cebuanas were shortlisted in the under-13 national team that will compete in the AFC under-13 Festival of Football in Vietnam this July.

San Roque FC’s Arantxa Trebol and Itsuko Bacayan and Subangdako FC’s Samantha Toledo pased the national team selection yesterday.

The players were determined after the series of games in the national tryouts held in Panaad and Talisay City.

Trebol, 11, is the youngest daughter of the SRFC coach Anthony Trebol, whose daughters Maritoni and Alexandra are also footballers.

His two eldest daughters joined previous tryouts but it was only Arantxa who made the training pool.

“Happy kaayo ko. May she remain an example for the kids that practice can bring you to places and help you achieve goals,” said the proud father.

The players selected from the tournament will have a one-week training camp in San Carlos City.

Davao girl booters post 3rd win

THE Davao Football Association (DFA) U13 girls team sustained its fiery run in the Philippine U13 Girls Selection Tournament, beating Dumaguete City, 5-3, at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City in a rainy Saturday afternoon.

The driving rain proved to be a non-factor for the scorching Davao girls they picked up their third consecutive victory in the tournament.

Moira Calizo scored a hatrick and Zuleika Yee added two goals of her own for Davao, which earlier defeated Rizal Football Association of Manila and host Bacolod.

The Davao offense went full throttle in the first half alone as Yee and Calizo scored twice for a 4-2 lead going into the second half. Yee booted in her goals five minutes into the match.

Calizo made it 3-0 after finding the back of the net in the 11th off a pass from Patricia Francisco.

Dumaguete City fought back and managed to trim the lead at 2-3 with back-to-back goals in the 20th and 35h minutes.

Calizo scored again in 39th off a follow up on Elizabeth Pero's attempt inside the penalty box to extend the lead at 5-2.

DFA head coach Reynalyn Ravanes, in text messages to Sun.Star, said credited the girls for their teamwork and heart in winning three straight.

"I also commend my players for playing well. They have shown their determination and will to win that is why we have been very successful," Ravanes said. "I hope they will continue this kind of play throughout the end of the tournament so that we will win the title."

The Davao girls were playing San Carlos University for the title as of this posting Sunday.

The tournament serves as the basis for the selection to the national team that will compete in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U13 Girls Festival of Football slated in June in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
