Azkal selection side loses to South Korean team on penalties
zkals United, a selection of current and former members of the Philippine national men’s football team, gallantly battled to a 1-all tie against third-tier South Korean club Icheon Citizen FC, only to lose in a penalty shootout, 4-2, in a charity match Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The Philippine side, which was playing without some of its top players because of United Football League commitments, bucked a 21st minute goal by Icheon striker Bin Tae Kwan, remaining aggressive throughout the match. Azkals mainstays Misagh Bahadoran and Chieffy Caligdong had opportunities early in the second half, but were unable to capitalize. Filipino-German Dennis Wolf, who was making his Azkals debut, also had several attempts that did not bear fruit.
Scoring Summary

Marwin Angeles (89') Bin Tae Kwan (21')
Still, Azkals United kept on the attack, and Marwin Angeles, a member of the Under-23 national squad, broke through with a goal in the 89th minute to equalize.
The rules of the friendly provided for no extra time after 90 minutes of play in case of a tied match, necessitating a penalty shootout.
The South Koreans knocked in all four of their penalty shots, while Angel Guirado, the first taker for the Philippines, and Carli de Murga, the last, missed their respective attempts. Chieffy Caligdong, who served as the captain for the match, and Ruben Doctora, a former national player, made their attempts for the Azkals.
Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss said he was happy with the result. “I want to congratulate the team, despite the loss,” he said, noting the fighting heart of the team during the comeback.
The proceeds of the match are set to go to victims of tropical storm “Sendong,” which affected thousands of families in southern Philippines. It was the second charity match played by a selection composed of Azkals players this month. On January 7, a Philippine selection dropped a 3-1 result to CF Internacional de Madrid.

Undermanned Azkals United confident vs Koreans
MANILA, Philippines – The Azkals United may be playing minus their key members Saturday, but they remain confident ahead of their Kia RIO Cup friendly match against Icheon Citizen FC of South Korea.
“I expect a strong side from Korea, we have to react to that,” said Azkals team coach Hans Michael Weiss.
However, they will have to do that without Filipino-British siblings Phil and James Younghusband, Nate Burkey, Jason Sabio and others.
Weiss said some players would have to miss the charity game due to their obligations to their mother clubs in the United Football League (UFL).
The Younghusbands play for the Meralco Sparks FC, while Burkey, Sabio and Lexton Moy play for Kaya Cignal FC.
“Nevertheless, we have a good crop of players and I'm confident we can do something tomorrow,” said Weiss.
Weiss is referring to the inclusion of Azkals right back Rob Gier and Filipino-German Dennis Wolf into their line-up.
Gier said the absence of the Younghusbands is a great opportunity for other Pinoy players to step up.
“Without Phil and James, it gives someone else the opportunity to show what they could do. In a way, I think it could be good,” he said.
The Kia RIO Cup will take place at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
Members of the Korean side arrived in Manila late Thursday.
Icheon coach Lee Hyun-chang said they are looking forward to playing against the Filipino squad.
He said it is good for both countries to finally play a football match.
“Thank you for inviting us to the Philippines... I know there's a lot of competition in basketball between Philippines and Korea but not in soccer tournaments,” said Lee through a translator.
The Kia RIO Cup was organized for the benefit of the Sendong victims as well as the families hit by the recent landslide in Compostela Valley.
Charlie Williams of Dragon Promotions, which is responsible for bringing the Korean team in, said the idea of holding the charity game actually started in a conversation over lunch.
“Six months ago, we were having lunch with Vice President for ABS-CBN Sports Peter Musngi. We’ve been producing billiards events for the Philippines for many years now… we talked about football, Philippines and how's it's growing exponentially over the last couple of years,” related Williams.
They talked about the Koreans’ love for football and the growing population of the Korean community in the Philippines.
“Then it just kind of came out, oh, football, Korea, what do you guys think about doing a football event with Korean team and the Azkals? And here we are 6 months later,” said Williams.
The Kia Rio Cup between the Azkals United and Icheon Citizen will be aired live by Studio 23 on January 21 starting at 7 p.m.

Limpag: New-look Azkals to face Koreans
By Mike T. Limpag
Fair Play
Thursday, January 19, 2012
FOOTBALL fans who follow the Azkals but not the UFL will probably find it strange that in the Saturday friendly against Icheon of South Korea, Phil and James Younghusband, among other players, won’t be seeing action.
And I hope these fans would get the right explanaition—that the players have club duties in the United Football League—lest they begin to think that they’re just busy with, I don’t know, showbiz commitments?
The friendly is part of a busy Saturday that will see two UFL matches in Rizal, which will be aired live on Akstyon TV, before the Azkal friendly, which will also be in Rizal.
The friendly will also be aired live, on ABS, and the station that signed a four-year contract worth P300M (of airtime, not cash. Sigh) has treated the UFL, sadly, as it would the rival shows in GMA.
It pretends it doesn’t exist and commentators have to deal with a practice that bars them from mentioning other stations. That may be okey when it comes to showbiz updates, but not when it comes to sports.
And for a station that got the contract because, according to the PFF president, “it raised the profile of football in the country by airing the games,” it’s a counterproductive move that insults the more knowledgeable fans.
And of course, to the UFL clubs and owners who pay P195,000 a month to some of the marquee players.
Still, I’m hoping this Saturday’s match will change all that. I hope that in this Saturday’s game, casual fans of the team will learn a thing or two about the football landscape in the country.
So, who’s missing the game this Saturday? Global FC has a game against Pasargad and I think the Azkals players in the Dan Palami-owned team have their priorities straightened out.
On Sunday, the Philippine Air Force will meet the Stallions, Loyola will take on the Philippine Army and Kaya FC will face the Green Archers. PAF, Loyola, Army and Kaya have 10 guys (at least) who played for the Azskals in the CF Madrid friendly.
So how will this new-look Azkals fare?
I don’t know. I guess, we will all find out this Saturday.
I just hope that whether it’s the new look team, or one that features regular guys, we will finally win a friendly on home soil.
It’s been a while and, three straight home losses, even if friendlies, doesn’t look good.

Azkals brace for tough Icheon Citizen match
By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines – Icheon Citizen may be playing in the third tier of Korean football, but it doesn’t mean that they would be easy picking for the Philippine Azkals.
The Azkals are bracing for a tough test against the Koreans at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Kia Rio Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
And while the Citizen squad is a relatively unknown entity in the football world, the Azkals are welcoming the challenge of facing a club from an elite footballing country like Korea.
“It’s imperative that we continue playing against clubs from abroad to keep the team competitive,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami.
Palami said the game against the Koreans, which will also benefit
the victims of Tropical Storm “Sendong,” is an integral part of the preparation for the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal in March.
Coach Michael Weiss has stressed the need to bolster the squad in case some Europe-based players won’t be available in important tournaments.
A brand new 2012 Kia Rio will be raffled off after the game.

Philippine Azkals gear up for Challenge Cup
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals are stepping up their preparations for the upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup in March.
ABS-CBN correspondent Dyan Castillejo reported that the Philippine squad has been holding practice sessions twice a day at the Fort Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
As part of their preparations, the team will participate in an exhibition game against South Korea’s Icheon Citizen FC on Saturday.
Filipino-British footballer Rob Gier flew down to Manila to join the practice sessions.
“It's a practice match for fitness, team cohesion,” Gier said of their friendly match versus the third-tier Korean team.
A new recruit also joined the Azkals’ fold.
Filipino-German Dennis Wolf, who plays for FC Magdeburg in Germany, practiced with the Azkals.
“I don't know the whole team [yet] but a lot of good characters in them. Looking forward [to play with them]," said Wolf.
Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss said the friendly will help improve the team’s level of play.
“I want to improve their football skills,” he said.
The Azkals advanced into the final grouping of the AFC Challenge Cup by demolishing Bangladesh, 3-0, in March last year.
The Challenge Cup will take place in Nepal from March 8-19.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) will renew its contract with ABS-CBN for the television coverage of the Philippine Azkals.
PFF President Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said the 4-year contract will help the promotion of the sport in the country.
“We're going to sign with ABS-CBN... ‘yung pagcover ng ABS-CBN sa sport namin helped the promotion of the sport in general. Not only in the Philippines but also sa labas [ng bansa],” he said.
The Azkals United-Icheon Citizen FC game will be broadcast live by ABS-CBN Studio 23 on Saturday, 7 p.m.
