San Carlos City’s CPSU leads PFF-Smart Cup Provincial leg

By Henry G. Double

San Carlos City-based Central Philippine State University (CPSU) started with an unblemished 2-0 win-loss record as this year’s Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart Club Championship Provincial Qualifying kicked off Friday at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
For the first time since the provincial tournament unfolded two years ago, an unfamiliar team took control in the early stage of the competition.
Initially, CPSU defeated defending champion Ceres-La Salle Varsity, 2-1 in the opening day behind Elton John de Arce and Majie Taliform.
On Saturday, San Carlos survived another biggie University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 2-1 with Taliform scoring his second in the tournament this time with Gerald Paparon.
Ceres-La Salle snatched the second spot with a pair of wins against Kabankalan City FC and Carlos Hilado Memorial State College-Talisay.
PFF Regional Technical Director John Carmona, an official of San Carlos City Football Club, said that in order to put CPSU on the map of football, they have to adapt the national and international trends.
“Through good leadership, we were able to select the best players to be part of the team and of course, convinced our players that it’s not impossible to beat the best teams in the province and in the country despite minimal resources,” he said.
CPSU, which then represented Western Visayas, defeated Central Mindanao University of Region 10 to claim the 2015 National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association championship title during the national competition held in Tuguegarao, Cagayan Valley.
CPSU will next face Kabankalanons and Talisaynons on Sunday.
This single-round robin tournament is expected to end second week of August with top two teams advancing into the finals.

NOFA Club Provincial C’ships tentative kickoff set in April

Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) will be staging the 2014 NOFA Club Provincial Championships tentatively this April, as a qualifying tournament for the upcoming 4th Philippine Football Federation-Smart Club National Championships.
This was revealed by NOFA General-Secretary Paulline Javelona on Sunday in an interview over “Aksyon Isports” of dyEZ Aksyon Radyo-Bacolod.
She said this provincial tournament will determine which team will be representing the football association in the upcoming national championships.
“However, I have some difficulty right now with the April schedule because of some conflict of schedules. This is because one of the teams which committed to participate in this provincial qualifying, the Ceres-La Salle FC, is likewise playing in the UFL and will also be representing the President’s Cup on the same month,” Javelona explained.
“As a NOFA representative, we would also like to field the strongest team to represent the province in the national finals. And Ceres-La Salle is the two-time defending champion of this tournament,” she added.
On the other hand, the NOFA official also said that aside from the senior’s division, Negros Occidental is also the reigning back-to-back PFF-Suzuki U23 National Cup champion.
The tournament would have served as the qualifying for which team will represent the country in the Southeast Asian Games. However, the FA official noted that though the provincial squad had won the national tournament twice, they were also denied twice to represent the country.
“We have proven many times that the Negros Occidental team is the best in the country, but for unknown reasons the federation’s committee have yet to notice it,” Javelona said. “It’s quite unfair because our local clubs have been working so hard in order to come up with the best team. They spend much to form a highly-competitive football team. We hope that the efforts by these clubs in the province will be seen by the people in the federation,” she added./

Host Negros Occidental Football Association’s Ceres-La Salle has announced its official line-up yesterday, the day before the official kickoff of the Philippine Football Federation-organized Smart Club Championship-Visayas Regional Elimination scheduled November 23-25 in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.
Team assistant coach Ramon Janeo yesterday named the roster led by keeper Jurex Replentes, skipper Jason Cordova, Lemuel Unabia, Prince Hannesin Antony, Abelardo Solinas, Jose Emmanuel Diel, J Bagiuoro, Aldrin Dolino, Jayson Panhay, Joel Bedia, Rolando Ian Treyes, Richard Sumabong, Angelo Bahoyan, John Timothy Bolo, Joshua Beloya, and Koreans Choi Gun Hee, Yoon Byeong Jun, Yu Young Jin, Hyoun Jae Hun, Kim Jung Mook, and Sim Hyoung Min.
Meanwhile, calling the play for Ceres-La Salle squad is veteran coach Freddie “Nene” Lazarito while assisting him are Korean Cha Soung Yooung, Ramon Janeo and Ali Go. Team managers are siblings Ricardo and Leo Rey Yanson.
The team is currently holding rigid training at the Ayala North pitch in preparation for the tournament, said Janeo.
He added that the Ceres-La Salle’s intention to take another step into competitive football came after years of successful stints in local football tournaments.
The event will also serve as a qualifying process of teams which have plans to join the country’s premier football league – the United Football League, Janeo added.
“If we qualify in Top 2 of the Visayas Eliminations, then we will advance to the next stage which is the Round of 16,” Janeo said.
Janeo further said if Ceres-La Salle FC plays good game in the tournament, the squad will earn a slot in UFL’s Division 2.
On the other hand, the tentative date for the Round of 16 will be on January 13, 2013 with the venue yet to be determined, while the quarterfinals is scheduled January 19-20 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
The semifinals will take place on January 26, 2013 in the same venue with the finals on February 2, still at Rizal pitch.
A “no permit, no play” policy will be strictly implemented. A team is also allowed to register foreign players in a team roster, the letter said.
The tournament was originally scheduled to kick off November 21 but due to the withdrawal of Iloilo FA and Dumaguete FA, it was shelved.
According to a source, these FAs withdrew because most of their players are already playing with Manila-based clubs./

Goshenland, BSU Alumni arrange finals duel

GOSHENLAND simply outclassed Team Onse to barge into the finals while Benguet State University Alumni avenged its earlier loss to arrange a finals match up in the men’s open at the close of the first Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan Football Cup.

The undefeated Goshenland closed out their elimination with an emphatic 5-0 win-loss record before silencing the young Team Onse in their semis match up with a 5 -1 beating in the event co-organized by the Baguio United Football Club.

BSU Alumni, meanwhile, drubbed their younger counterparts by edging BSU Varsity in their semis match during the weekend play with a four goal difference, 5-1, in the event support by Goshenland Capitals.

The younger Varsity squad gearing up for the upcoming Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League earlier stung the alumni with an emphatic 6-1 victory Saturday morning in the weekly month-long tournament.

The less experienced Varsity squad, however, failed to sustain its win during the semis match in a rain soaked Melvin Jones football grounds.

Team Onse, composed of the Saint Louis University football squad, caught the last bus to the semis by edging Baguio City National High School Football Club with a 3-1 victory after the former absorbed a 2-0 beating against the BSU Varsity.

In the 7-a-side ladies open, Baguio Timanx of the fabled Baguio Cinderella football team drubbed their younger counterparts, Team Solid, 1-0, to advance in the finals with BSU A shooting down De La Salle Lipa, 3-0, also in the semis match.

The Timanx topped the eliminations with a clean 4 game victory while Baguio Solid and De La Salle shared the number two spot at the close of the eliminations with BSU A taking the last semis seat in the distaff event.

Team Solid then notched the third place plum after edging De La Salle while the Baguio Timanx and BSU A are set to square off with each other in the finals match next week.

Four MVP firms putting up squads for nat’l club football

Four companies owned by tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan will be linking up with teams for the National Club Football Championship slated late this year.

Smart Sports head Patrick Gregorio said Meralco, Maynilad, Smart and Cignal TV have signified their intention to sponsor a team each in the tournament.

Smart will be partnering with Kaya FC, the club team of Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo and Anton del Rosario.

Kaya plays in the United Football League, which will have two slots in the national tournament. The top two finishers in the UFL will gain berths to the finals, along with the top two teams from Luzon, Mindanao and Visayas.

Gregorio said they are also discussing possible sponsorship for a team from Negros Occidental with NOFA president Charlie Cojuangco.

For Maynilad, Gregorio said they might sponsor a team based in Alabang or Parañaque.
