BANGKOK (30 December 2024) – Suphanat Muenta’s extra-time winner puts Thailand in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 final.

At the end of regulation, the score was 2-1 for the home team, with Peeradon Chamratsamee (37th minute) and Patrik Gustavsson (54th) scoring for Thailand.

Philippines’ goal was scored by Bjorn Kristensen (84th).

DON’T FIRE VIC: Pinay5 manager rallies behind embattled coach

The manager of the national team is batting for status quo and appealing to the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) for the reinstatement of their head coach — Vic Hermans — as they prepare for the country’s hosting of the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup next year.

In a letter dated 24 December, Daniel Moran, who also serves as the national squad’s chief benefactor, reached out to PFF president John Gutierrez to ask him to “reconsider” his earlier decision of releasing the prolific Dutch coach from the national women’s squad.

With Hermans out, the national women’s squad was in chaos as four players in team captain Isabella Bandoja, Demelyn Rollon, Lanie Ortillo and Mykaella Abeto expressed their intentions to skip the upcoming international events.

The players said they couldn’t play for a new mentor, especially since it was Hermans who patiently assembled the team from scratch over the past three years.

Aside from the sacking of Hermans, the PFF also asked the players to join a hastily-called training camp from 26 to 30 December, reportedly saying that those who will not make it will be dropped from the national squad.

Moran said the PFF should observe a status quo by retaining the services of Hermans since they are entering the crucial stretch of their preparations for the AFC Women’s Futsal Qualification in Uzbekistan from 11 to 19 January and the World Cup from 14 November to 7 December next year.

“I sincerely urge the PFF to reconsider its decision regarding our national coach, Vic Hermans,” said Moran, who is also the chairman of the The Henry V. Moran Foundation, an organization that sponsors the studies and playing careers of countless football players from the marginalized sector.

“Over the past three years, Coach Vic has played a pivotal role in the development of futsal in the Philippines. His contributions have gone beyond the game, touching the lives of countless young Filipinos.”

Gutierrez has yet to respond to Moran’s plea.

The 71-year-old Hermans is no ordinary futsal coach.

In fact, he led the national teams of Iran, the Netherlands and Thailand to glorious finishes in the international arena. Under Hermans, the Philippines made great strides for the past three years, enough for the International Football Federation to award it the hosting duties for the inaugural staging of the futsal World Cup.

“A global icon in futsal, Vic Hermans’ leadership has brought prestige to our country, particularly with our involvement in the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup,” Moran added.

“His dedication has been nothing short of a blessing.”

Still, the PFF issued him the pink slip.

In a letter to Hermans dated 23 December, Gutierrez said they have decided to release him from the national women’s team due to its fruitless performance in the AFF tournament last November.

“The decision was made to ensure that the women’s national team is led by someone whose focus and actions are fully aligned with the federation’s objectives and directives, especially as we prepare for critical tournaments, including the AFC qualifications and the 2025 Women’s Futsal World Cup,” said Gutierrez in a letter obtained by DAILY TRIBUNE.

“However, you shall remain as head coach of the Philippine men’s national futsal team. In this capacity, we trust that you will continue to dedicate your expertise and leadership to advance the development and performance of the men’s national team.”

Moran said changing the head coach in the crucial stretch of their preparation for major international competitions is contrary to the federation’s promise of unity and collaboration that was issued when Gutierrez took over from Mariano “Nonong” Araneta in 2023.

“When will the PFF recognize the value of unity and collaboration? It’s time to set aside personal agendas and prioritize the greater good of futsal in the Philippines,” Moran, distinguished businessman and philanthropist, said.

“Let us honor the sacrifices of the coaches, the players, and stakeholders who have built the foundation of this sport in the country.”

“The future of futsal — and its ability to transform lives — depends on decisions like this.”

PINAY5 IN TURMOIL: Resignations rock World Cup-bound Phl futsal team

I don’t want to play for our country anymore because the PFF now is very disorganized and chaotic.’

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is facing yet another red card as key members of the national team tendered their resignations with less than a year before the country hosts the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup in November.

Team captain Isabella Bandoja, Demelyn Rollon, Lanie Ortillo and Mykaella Abeto issued their respective resignation letters on Thursday following the federation’s apparent attempt to ease them out of the national team.

The four players are regarded as the best in the team with Bandoja bagging the Golden Boot award in PFF Women’s League in 2023 after racking up 19 goals for Tuloy Football Club. Recently, she was given a call-up by the PFF to join the women’s football squad.

Bandoja and other players, however, cried foul after the federation made a shocking decision to suddenly call for a training camp at the height of the busy holiday season from 26 to 30 December in preparation for the AFC Women’s Futsal Qualification in Uzbekistan from 11 to 19 January. The submission of the roster for the Uzbekistan tourney is set on 31 December.

The federation said those who will not show up in the hastily-called training camp will be dismissed while national team coach in Dutch Vic Hermans, who built the squad from ground up for the past three years, was suddenly relieved of his role and was re-aligned to the men’s squad.

With some national team members failing to show up in the camp, which was arranged only a few days prior with no definite venue, and their coach sacked, Bandoja and his teammates felt the need to resign, thinking that the federation already has a team that will see action in the qualifiers and, possibly, the World Cup.

Sources claim that those whom the federation is grooming to replace the seasoned players are futsal newbies who used to play outdoor competition.

“Of course, I wouldn’t accept any offer from them if some of my teammates will not be included in the team. I am thinking for all of us, not just for myself,” said one of the resigned players, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“I cannot join the team if they will replace the players with those who don’t even have futsal background. How can the team perform if we only have one week to prepare with a new coach and now one knows what his background is? The new players will also have a hard time playing futsal, especially with only one week to prepare as they have been playing football all along.”

Easing out an established national team is nothing new in the PFF, which is now headed by John Gutierrez.

Last June, the team manager of the national women’s football team in businessman Jefferson Cheng also stepped down a year after leading the squad to a historic appearance in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Cheng resigned as team manager and chief benefactor of the squad after some of his programs were either replaced or put on hold by the new PFF administration.

His decision to walk away put the federation in disarray as some staff and players resigned on top of the 14 federation staff who stepped down in Gutierrez’s first six months in office.

DAILY TRIBUNE tried but Gutierrez couldn’t be reached for comment.

In her statement, another player admitted that the situation in the federation has been “very disorganized and chaotic.”

“The reason why I am not attending the PFF training camp is because it’s not coach Vic, who has been my coach for three years,” said the lady booter, adding that their original plan is to train with Hermans starting 4 January until the PFF issued a memo that asks them to train at the height of the holiday season.

“I don’t want to play for our country anymore because the PFF now is very disorganized and chaotic.”

The Pinay5 are coming off a fruitless stit in the ASEAN Futsal Championship last November but have shown signs of improvement and are expected to make huge strides this year heading into the World Cup that is set from 21 November to 7 December at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
