CEBU CITY, Philippines— The Cebu Football Club (CFC) Gentle Giants will hire a new head coach for the next Philippines Football League (PFL) season.
This was revealed by Cebu FC Gentle Giants owner Ugur Tasci as his club prepares for the Copa Paulino Alcantara in August and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League later this year.

It can be recalled that Cebu FC or CFC finished as first runners-up in the recently concluded Philippines Football League (PFL) behind reigning champions Kaya FC Iloilo.
Both clubs will represent the Philippines in the AFC Champions League.
However, CFC will likely have a new coaching staff for the two upcoming tournaments as Turkish coach Mehmet Khakil and his assistant Levant Ozturk will no longer be coaching the team.

“First we are finalizing our coaching staff arrangement. We will most probably have foreign coaches coming. Coach Khakil, thanks to them, they did an amazing job, they brought big pride and honor to the club,” said Tasci.
Despite the announcement, Tasci didn’t further divulge the reason, why his club would be hiring a new head coach.
Khakil and Ozturk helped CFC become contenders in the PFL along with two key Turkish players in Mert Altinoz and Arda Cinkir which they loaned from Turkish club Hatayspor through a partnership with the latter.

CFC finished their first full-season campaign in the PFL with 51 points from 15 wins, five draws, and one defeat. They also left a strong impression in the competition after beating Kaya Iloilo twice and having a draw in their last meeting.
“We will give our head coach the privilege to choose his assistant coach. At least in this case, we can have a different way to improve our club,” said Tasci.
CFC will compete against 16 other clubs in the Copa Paulino Alcantara which they also managed to finish as first runners-up in the 2021 edition.

Football: Weiss expects tough matchup against Chinese Taipei
MANILA – Head Coach Michael Weiss is staying locked in.
The Philippine men’s national football team head tactician is looking forward to an exciting faceoff against Chinese Taipei and said that he expects the match to be tougher, during the pre-game online press conference with the Philippine Football Federation on Sunday.
“My expectation is that this would be an even tougher match than the first match because Chinese Taipei showcased in a very good manner in their recent game against Thailand. They already played Thailand last year in December in an unofficial friendly match in Thailand, I was there and I saw the match, and they could even beat Thailand on home soil,” said the returning coach.
Chinese Taipei previously battled with Thailand in a match that ended in a draw, while the Azkals won against Nepal in their own friendly match, 1-0.
“They held them to a 2-2 which is a very respectable result. Also, the way they played is as Taiwan usually is. They are very compact, they are good in transition, and they are physically strong. They are maybe not yet on the technical level that you expect but it’s about getting results. It’s about being compact, aggressive, and this is what they are. This is what they’ll show in Manila,” he added.
And even with their previous win, Weiss pleaded for patience and emphasized how his squad needs more time to come together ahead of the 2026 AFC Asian qualifiers in November.
“Please understand that I was just here for a very short while even if I know and met many familiar places, so it’s still too early to get into [specific tactics]. For me, this tournament is all about observation and seeing all the players, training with them, and seeing who can help us with the way how we want to play,” he said.
“Generally, we want to push a little bit more forward, we want to create more chances, and we want to be more on an attacking sprint, particularly on the artificial pitch in Rizal Memorial, that’s what it will be all about for tomorrow.”
Midfielder Kevin Ingreso in addition also echoed what his coach wants for the Azkals.
“It’s about getting to know each other in this particular camp. We’ve only been together for a week. Obviously, it’s not a long time, but I think it gives everyone a good impression of how everyone can play, and how the coach wants to work. It’s getting to know each other, we have to adapt to every character in the team. So I think it’s very exciting for what’s to come in the future,” said Ingreso.
Despite this, Weiss is confident that the team is on the right track.
“What I can promise is that we will have a good, confident, and joyous team which will try to get to the forefront and show something to the people. Even if things weren’t perfect in the last game, I think we can already see some glimpses of going forward and being more of an attacking team and trying to put opponents on the pressure.”

The Philippine Men’s National Team welcomed the return of head coach Hans Michael Weiss with a 1-0 victory last Thursday 15 June 2023 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.

Philippines MNT to face Nepal and Chinese Taipei this June 2023
The Philippine Men’s National Team will return to action this June 2023 with two FIFA International ‘A’ Friendly Matches scheduled against Nepal on 15 June 2023 and Chinese Taipei on 19 June 2023 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
The two friendly matches will be held during the June 2023 FIFA International Match Window and will serve as the team’s preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup/AFC Asian Cup joint preliminary qualifiers scheduled in the fourth quarter of 2023.
“We are pleased that both Nepal and Chinese Taipei agreed to play a friendly match with the Men’s National Team this coming June 2023,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta. “We hope this friendly matches can help the Men’s National Team in their preparations for the FIFA World Cup/AFC Asian Cup qualifiers later this year.”
The Azkals had two friendly matches in the Middle East early this year, yielding to both Kuwait, 0-2, last 23 March in Kuwait City, Kuwait and to Jordan, 0-4, last 28 March in Doha, Qatar.

29 players named to FIFA Women’s World Cup provisional squad
The Philippine Women’s National Team enters the final phase of its preparation for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a month long training camp in Sydney, Australia.
Filipinas coach Alen Stajcic has named 29 players to his provisional squad, most of which will be in the pre-World Cup camp set at the Western Sydney Wanderers Complex.
Co-captains Hali Long and Tahnai Annis lead the players on the list which will be trimmed to 23 for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand.
The team got a boost ahead of training camp with FIFA announcing the Filipinas’ jump from No. 49 to No. 46 in the latest rankings. The ranking is the latest historic achievement for the Filipinas who have vaulted from No. 53 at the end of last year.
“We wish the players and staff the best for their final preparatory camp for the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta. “We appreciate all their hardwork and sacrifice for the country. They have our full support.”
PFF general secretary Atty Edwin Gastanes expressed confidence that the Filipinas’ camps and matches arranged by the PFF and the Filipinas management since last year have strengthened the squad ahead of the World Cup.
“Nothing beats having experienced playing against quality opponents and I think the Filipinas have done that over the past few months,” said Gastanes. “It will certainly help them in the Women’s World Cup.”
Filipinas team manager Jeff Cheng hopes the historic Women’s World Cup stint of the Filipinas will be another shining moment not just for the players but for the entire country.
“This is the biggest stage in women’s football and the Filipinas will be shining a spotlight on the country. The team wants to make the country proud that’s why the PFF and the management are doing everything possible to prepare the team,” said Cheng.
Landing in Group A, the Filipinas play their first match against Switzerland on July 21 in Dunedin, New Zealand. They face host New Zealand on July 25 in Wellington, before traveling back to Auckland for the duel with Norway on July 30 to wrap up the group stage.

PFF NEWS – Philippine Men’s National Team
The Philippine Football Federation is pleased to welcome Hans Michael Weiss back for a second stint as head coach of the Philippine Men’s National Team.
Weiss returns to coach the Philippine Men’s National Team, close to 10 years after his contract ended in January 2014.
Weiss has had spells coaching in Romania with first division club Otelul Galati and the national teams of Mongolia (2017-2020) and Laos (2022-2023).
Weiss will immediately buckle down to work with the PHI MNT playing friendly matches against Nepal on 15 June 2023 and Chinese-Taipei on 19 June 2023. Both matches will be played at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
“We are delighted to welcome coach Weiss back to the PHI MNT,” said PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta.

“He has kept the Philippines close to his heart and continues to be a well-respected figure by players and staff,” Araneta said of Weiss.
