PREVIEW: Filipinas take on Scotland in Pinatar Cup
SAN PEDRO DEL PINATAR, Spain – The Philippines Women’s National Team clashes with another European powerhouse in Scotland on Saturday, looking to improve on its performance two days ago in the 2023 Pinatar Cup here.
While Filipinas coach Alen Stajcic lauded his team’s defensive performance in the 0-1 loss to Wales, he admits there is plenty of room for improvement when the Filipinas have possession.
Scotland, the winner of the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2020, is coming off a 0-2 loss to Iceland in their opening match, conceding two quick goals early in the second half last Wednesday.
AFF Women’s Championship top scorer Sarina Bolden and midfielder Jackie Sawicki are already in the camp, giving Stajcic more options for selection. Sawicki’s last game for the PWNT came in the AFF finals last July against Thailand.
Both Bolden and Sawicki arrived to camp less than 48 hours before the first match against Wales, ruling them out of the game as they try to recover from the long journey from Australia to Spain. The duo trained last Thursday.
Europe-based players Meryll Serrano and Katrina Guillou only played in the second half of the match against Wales as they played for their clubs just before the international window opened a few days ago.
“A lot of things to look forward in the next week and hopefully we can freshen the squad up for Game 2 and see how we go against Scotland who are as good as a team or even better (than Wales),” said Stajcic.

PFF and PFL Statement on the status of United City FC
The Philippine Football Federation and Philippines Football League announce that defending league and cup champions United City FC has requested to withdraw from the current PFL Season 2022/23 ahead of the league resumption this weekend.
In its communication to PFF, United City cited financial reasons behind their withdrawal from the PFL.
“We understand the situation affecting United City FC that forced them to withdraw from the league,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta. “We hope that the club and its management are able to bounce back from this predicament.”
Founded in 2020, United City took over the management of three-time league champions Ceres-Negros FC prior to the PFL season 2020. The club gained traction in Philippine club football scene by becoming the first Philippine clubs to qualify outright in the AFC Champions League group stages by virtue of being named league champions in 2020.
“We are saddened that United City have decided to withdraw from the league,” added PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “While the club has reiterated its desire to compete in future seasons, it must sort out its situation first before making their return to league action.”
“The case of UCFC is part of the realities on the ground, which must be addressed,” said PFL Commissioner Coco Torre. “We commend UCFC for the high standards they have set earlier on, but we must also consider the economics surrounding football as a business.”
PFF and PFL will deliberate on the status of United City FC with regards to the league matches affected following the club’s withdrawal.

Kaya FC Gear Up for Visayas Clasico to Start 2023
PFL 2023 — Kaya hosts Round Three between Iloilo and Cebu.
The time has come once more for a derby match between two of the Philippines Football League’s top contenders: Kaya FC-Iloilo and Dynamic Herb Cebu FC.
The season series is currently split between the teams; the yellow and black took the first fixture on neutral soil, while the reds exacted payback in their Cebu debut. This next round will be taking place at the Iloilo Sports Complex, where Kaya’s 12th man is expected to play a huge role in swinging the game towards the home team.
“There was a sense of unity between players and fans in the stadium the last time we played in Iloilo,” noted head coach Yu Hoshide. “Hopefully this time again, the fans will give extra energy to the players.”
When the team entered the Gentle Giants’ den last October, the rambunctious Cebuano crowd helped will their team to a 3-2 victory that very nearly saw Kaya equalize at the death. Without question, the passion for football is alive and well in Visayas—and the club’s long-awaited homecoming didn’t disappoint.
The Ilonggo crowd didn’t lose out in terms of intensity and warm welcomes, showing up in force to Kaya’s final fixture of 2022 against United City FC. Rejuvenated to once again put on a show for the fans, the boys pulled out a 2-1 victory to celebrate the club’s return home.
Kaya FC-Iloilo enter the 2023 calendar year looking to extend their lead atop the PFL standings—amassing thirty points in the first half of the season, a full nine points ahead of Cebu FC (who have two games in hand).
Eager to kick things off, Coach Hoshide had this to say about the team’s morale heading into the upcoming restart.
“I am really excited to resume the league again. We have a strong squad and made good preparations, so hopefully we will have a good start to 2023 next week.”
“This is the first game of the year so there is a possibility that it will be a nervous game,” he continued. “But we’ve had good preseason practices so I hope the players will fight with confidence.
Coming back from a long break against a quality opponent isn’t going to be easy, but the Japanese tactician believes that the pieces are in place for a Kaya victory this weekend.
“Confidence and experience are the key!” Coach Yu proclaimed. “Especially since we have many experienced players, I’m confident that they’ll show 100% on the field on February 19.”
See you all at the Iloilo Sports Complex next Sunday! Kickoff’s at 3:00 PM, but gates open at 1:30 PM. Tickets are available at the stadium entrance: ₱200 for VIP and ₱100 for the Grandstand! You can also catch the livestream at home on the PFL’s Facebook and YouTube pages!

Shirmar Felongco Bids Farewell to Kaya After 7 Seasons
Calinog born and raised, the timeless Noy makes his exit after joining the club in 2016.
Kaya FC-Iloilo would like to announce the departure of Shirmar “Noynoy” Felongco after seven years with the club. The versatile defender fought for the yellow and black through three AFC Cup runs, two Copa Paulino Alcantara titles, and the team’s first ever AFC Champions League campaign.
“Sa mga players, staff, at management; masasabi ko sa ilang years ko na paglaro sa Kaya ay marami akong natutunan on and off the field na hindi ko makakalimutan sa buong buhay ko,” expressed Shirmar. “Salamat dahil sinuportahan nyo ako through the ups and downs, at tinuring nyo akong pamilya.”
Felongco has been a staple of Philippine football for the past decade, coming over to Kaya in 2016—in time for the team’s move to his home province of Iloilo just two years later. A menace at fullback, or in the occasional run in midfield, #27 gave everything he had every time he stepped foot on the pitch.
“I want to express my sincerest gratitude to Noy for his 7 years of dedication to Kaya FC-Iloilo,” noted Kaya President and GM Paul Tolentino. “It’s a very bittersweet sight to see him leave the club at this point in his career, however we want to wish him the best of luck moving forward.”
Tolentino continued, “Noy was a joy to watch on the field as he always relished a battle on the field and treated every match like a warrior. Maraming Salamat Noy! Una Kaya!”
In a parting message to fans, Noy stated, “Sa lahat ng Suporters ng Kaya. Maraming salamat sa patuloy nyong pag suporta. Thank you KAYA FAMILY! 🙌🏾❤️”

Grassroots football continued across the country with the conduct of the Regional Festival of Football (FOF) over the past three weeks.
Almost 2,000 young players (boys and girls) participated in the FOFs which are hosted by the PFF Regional Football Associations.
Camiguin Misamis Oriental FA held their FOF last 21 January 2023 at the Pelaez Sports Complex in Cagayan de Oro City.
Central Luzon RFA and Golden Davao, meanwhile, conducted their FOF last 28-29 January at the Tarlac Recreational and Sports Complex and New Bataan, Davao de Oro respectively, while Central Visayas FA had their FOF last 29 January at the Dynamic Herb Sports Complex in Cebu City.
Panay RFA, Eastern Visayas RFA, and Davao South RFA also hosted the FOFs last weekend at the Central Barbara Elementary School in Iloilo, Leyte Sports Development Center in Tacloban, Leyte, and Tionko Football Field in Davao City.
There were also several FOFs held towards the end of last year with Butuan-Agusan Del Norte FA (November 2022) and Iligan-Lanao RFA (December 2022) hosting the FOFs.

Reyes, Mitchell, Fujii Among Preseason Departures
Transfer windows are a time rife with change: some of it is new and exciting, while others are filled with thank yous and goodbyes. Ahead of the resumption of the 2022-23 Philippines Football League season, Kaya FC-Iloilo can confirm that five players are on the move.
Sandro Reyes is taking his talents to Germany, having signed with Bundesliga 2 side SpVgg Greuther Fürth’s U-23 squad. The 19-year-old featured prominently for the Philippines’ Youth and Senior National Teams last year, showcasing his quality on the international stage and netting him this next European challenge.
The Wonderboy joined Kaya early in the 2022 season, his limited stint with the club spanning the AFC Champions League Qualifiers, Copa Paulino Alcantara, and AFC Cup. In a parting message to the Iloilo fans, he said, “Just a massive thank you to everyone for always supporting, Una Kaya!”
Ryo Fujii made his exit several weeks ago, but stays in Southeast Asia after signing with Indonesian outfit PSIS Semarang. The master passer officially joined the team in 2021, ahead of the team’s first-ever ACL Group Stage campaign.
“It’s been an amazing two years with Kaya,” the Hong Kong-born Japanese midfielder stated. “Thank you to the management and staff for bringing me in and welcoming me with open arms. I’m sure we will cross paths in the future again.”
Quincy Kammeraad signed an extension to stay another year with Iloilo, but will be leaving the team temporarily. Up until June, the young goalkeeper will be on loan with the Azkals Development Team: looking to build chemistry with the squad ahead of the SEA Games later this year.
Carlyle Mitchell entered the fold in the onset of the 2020 season, becoming the team’s defensive rock from the get go. The Trinidad and Tobago international’s well of experience, soaring headers, and veteran leadership came through for Kaya on numerous occasions; but his departure opens the doors for the squad’s other highly talented backline options (Rota, Tacusalme, Menzi, Diano, Casambre) to fill the void.
Patrick Arthur joined the team midway through the 2022 Copa Paulino Alcantara. The Ghanaian midfielder added his size and physicality to the mix, and fans won’t soon forget his electric free kick against Dynamic Herb Cebu FC in his Philippine debut.
Kaya FC-Iloilo would like to thank these players for their contributions to the club, and for giving it their all while representing the yellow and black.
Stay tuned to our social feeds for updates and announcements as the team gets ready to kick off the 2023 slate: vs CFC on February 19 at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
