Cebu FC gets provisional license to play in PFL

A club based in Cebu will participate in the planned opener of the Philippines Football League’s fifth season on Sept. 25.

The PFL announced Tuesday, Aug. 24 that Cebu FC will enter the fold after being granted a provisional license by the Philippine Football Federation’s First Instance Body.

Cebu FC becomes the seventh club in the PFL fold, joining defending champion United City FC, Kaya-Iloilo, Azkals Development Team, Stallion-Laguna, Mendiola FC 1991 and Maharlika-Manila.

Owned by Dynamic Sports Herb, Cebu FC has been busy signing players in anticipation of the license approval.

Some of the club’s signings were former players from University of the Philippines, namely Daniel Gadia, Ace Villanueva and Kintaro Miyagi.

Oliver Colina, an A-licensed coach who had a spell as Kaya mentor in the 2020 AFC Cup, will call the shots for Cebu FC.

Kickoff for 2021 PFL tentatively postponed to September

 MANILA (16 Aug 2021) – The kickoff date for the 2021 Philippine Football League (PFL) has been tentatively postponed to 25 September 2021.

The initial kickoff date was supposed to be next week on 21 August 2021.

The decision for the postponement was made by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) considering the continued spread of COVID-19 and the re-imposition of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The PFL prioritise the health and safety of players, coaching staff, match officials, sponsors, and other stakeholders involved in the organization of the matches.

PFL eyes September opening

The Philippines Football League (PFL) is hoping to finally kick off its fifth season outside Metro Manila by next month.

PFL commissioner Coco Torre said they are looking to stage their games around the last week of September, following its stalled opener due to the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila and fringe provinces.

“Hopefully, by the last week of September. It will depend on the country’s Covid-19 situation,” Torre told Daily Tribune.

“We really want the league to push through but of course under the right circumstances which ensures the safety of everyone.”

The PFL was originally scheduled to start its season on 21 August with the Philippine Football Federation National Training Center in Cavite and Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna as venues for the closed-circuit games.

The league, however, was forced to scrap its plans after the national government upgraded to a stricter quarantine status from 6 to 20 August in Manila, Laguna and Cavite.

With that, professional football clubs were also forced to halt their actual team scrimmages and were limited to online and individual training.

Torre said they are tipped to present their final plans to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), which would include their request for the resumption of training and proposed health protocols for the season.

The PFL is expecting a league-high nine teams that will see action this year, bannered by reigning PFL champion United City FC and mainstays Kaya Iloilo FC, Maharlika FC, Azkals Development Team, Stallion FC and Mendiola FC.

Meanwhile, upcoming expansion teams Dynamic Herb Cebu FC and Laos FC, CDO Rapids FC have yet to complete their requirements before getting full approval to enter the league.

“Total of three applicant clubs are still subject to compliance and will need full approval,” Torre said.

“So if all goes well, we’ll have nine clubs. That is the highest number of clubs in PFL history.”

The Dynamic Herb Cebu Football Club (DHCFC) has initially signed up 23 football players, including five foreign players in preparation for this year’s season of the Philippine Football League last August 4, 2021.

AFC A-licensed coach Oliver ‘Bingbing’ Colina has been tapped as head coach, while former national player Alex Ballesteros has taken on the role of assistant coach. One of the country’s top goalkeepers Ref Cuaresma is the team’s goalkeeping coach. We are also very proud to add another AFC A-licensed coach, Apol Bariñan to the team. She is the current assistant coach for the Philippine Women’s National Football Team and will be joining DHCFC at the end of the women’s team season. Other members of the coaching staff are Physical Therapist Mark Uy, Carlo Sumayang as the conditioning coach and Jimmy Liman as the kit man.

We are working on our final roster in the coming days. After initially signing a few players, our Team Manager Hannah Wong has completed submission of the remaining requirements from the provisional license that PFL has primarily granted last August 6. We eagerly await updates for the licensing status.

We assure everyone that the club has strictly followed all COVID-19 public health protocols from the selection of the team to the signing of the contracts. Face masks and face shields were only taken off for the purpose of the video and pictorials. The health and safety of all the players and staff is our priority.

Philippine Women’s National Team Tryouts Gets Underway

 The Philippine Women’s National Team began their preparations for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 qualifiers with the team tryouts, which started yesterday 04 August 2021 at Great Park Irvine in Irvine, California, USA.

The player tryouts session is part of the team’s United States training camp in the buildup to the qualifiers scheduled on 13-25 September 2021. The Philippines will face Hong Kong and Nepal for a spot in the Women’s Asian Cup, which also acts as qualifiers for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

Head coach Marlon Maro arrived in the United States last Monday 02 August 2021 and will oversee the tryouts and training camp alongside assistant coaches Rose Ton Barinan, Michael Agbayani, Anthony Albao, and Marlon Pinero.

PFF Women’s Committee co-chairperson Jefferson Cheng is the team manager for this campaign.

Over 40 players (composed of Philippine-based and US-based players) are expected to join the tryouts. Following the tryouts, the training camp will begin and will serve as the basis to select the 23 players that will represent the country in the qualifiers.

The team’s upcoming campaign in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the MVP Sports Foundation.
