United Football League squad Global FC bowed out after losing to Tanjong Pagar United, 2-1, in the second leg of their Singapore Cup semifinal encounter on Friday night at Jalan Besar Stadium in the city-state.
The result gave S.League side Tanjong Pagar a ticket to the finals after a 4-3 victory on aggregate. Global forced a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their clash last Tuesday.
Tanjong Pagar held an early lead after Monsef Zerka scored at the third minute for a 1-nil advantage.
Zerka found the back of the net once again at the 58th minute after a penalty conversion to put Tanjong Pagar up, 2-nil.
Global caught a lucky break as Tanjong Pagar scored an own goal at the 71st minute, trimming the Filipino side’s deficit to 2-1. However, the UFL squad failed to hit an equalizing goal to allow the Singaporean club to advance to the tournament final.
Tanjong Pagar will face the winner of the other semifinal pairing featuring fellow S.League sides Home United and Balestier Khalsa.
The Singapore Cup is an annual invitational tournament pitting S.League squads and international teams, mostly from Southeast Asia.
UFL clubs Global, which made its debut in the competition, and Loyola Meralco Sparks, which reached the quarterfinals, are the two Philippine representatives to the competition.
